1 Short Answer Questions

a) What is an absolute error in a measurand? What is a relative error?

b) How is the velocity ~v defined in general? How can the general expression be simplified if ~v = const.?
c) A body moves with the (time-dependent) velocity ~v (t). How can we formally calculate the location of the
body ~s(t) at time t if it is at location ~s0 at time t = 0?
d) What is the definition of the acceleration?
e) Multiple choice question: A force of 100N acts on a body with a mass of 10kg. The acceleration of the
body is...
(A): a = 0.1m/s2 , (B): a = 1m/s2 , (C): a = 10m/s2 , (D): a = 1000m/s2 ?

2 Error Calculation
You determine the force F acting on a body by measuring its mass m = 0.500 kg and its acceleration a =
10.0 m/s2 with the formula F = ma = 0.500 kg · 10.0 m/s2 = 5.00N. Assume that your scale has a measurement
accuracy of 1% and your accelerometer measurement has a measurement error of 2%.

a) Approximately calculate the relative error of the calculated force F .

b) Calculate the absolute error of F .

c) You now want to weigh another object that is too heavy for the scale you were previously using (measuring
accuracy 1%). Therefore, you determine the total mass M = m1 + m2 of the object by separating it into
two parts (with masses m1 and m2 ) and weighing them separately. You measure m1 = 0.500 kg with the
scale you were previously using and m2 = 1.500 kg with another scale with a measurement accuracy of
2%. Indicate the value of M and the relative and absolute accuracy with which you determined this value

3 Force Vectors on The Hockey Puck
A hockey puck (0.30kg) slides frictionlessly on an ice surface. Two hockey sticks hit the puck at the same time
(see sketch). The force F~1 has a magnitude of 5.0 N (-20°, 4th quadrant) and the force F~2 has a magnitude of
8.0 N (+ 60°, 1st quadrant).

a) The vectorF~1 in component

 representation
 ...(A):

4.2N 4.7N 4.7N 2.0N
(A): F~1 = , (B): F~1 = , (C): F~1 = , (D): F~1 =
−1.9N −1.7N 1.7N −4.6N
(calculate yourself, then “vote”)

b) Calculate the vector of the total force acting on the puck F~ = F~1 + F~2 .
c) Calculate the acceleration vector ~a experienced by the puck.

d) Calculate the magnitude and direction of the puck’s acceleration.

4 Instantaneous Acceleration and Average Acceleration

The speed of a particle moving along the x-axis is expressed by the equation

vx = 40 − 5.0t2

here vx is the speed in m/s and t is the time in s.

a) Determine the average acceleration in the time interval t = 0s to t = 2.0s.

b) Determine the acceleration at time t = 2.0s.

5 Police Chase
A car moves at a constant speed of 45.0 m/s past an advertising sign behind which a police patrol is positioned.
One second (1 s) after the car has passed the advertising sign, the patrol sets off with a constant acceleration
of 3.0m/s2 .

After how many seconds does the police patrol catch up with the vehicle?

6 Vertical Stone Throw
You throw a stone (particle) straight up with an initial speed of 20.0 m/s. The thrower stands on a tower 50.0
m above the ground. The stone then falls straight down.

a) Determine the time after which the stone reaches its maximum height if it is in the thrower’s hand at
position A at time tA = 0
b) Determine the maximum height of the stone (above the thrower).

c) Determine the speed when the stone returns to its starting point.
d) Determine the speed and position of the stone after 5.0 s.

7 Ferry
A boat, trying to cross a wide river, travels at a constant speed of 10.0 km/h relative to the water. The flow
speed of the water to the east is 5.00 km/h.
a) Determine the speed of the boat relative to an observer on the shore when the boat is heading north.
b) What course (=angle to north) does the boat travel when crossing from the observer’s perspective?

c) What course should the boat take to cross the river by the shortest route?
