DEAR STUDENT/PARENT
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE LOAN, AND KEEP
FOR FUTURE REFERENCE
2. A list of successful and unsuccessful applicants will be available at the Financial Aid Office, and an SMS will be
sent to each applicant concerned.
3. A registration fee is not required if a student qualifies for a NSFAS loan, and ANY PAYMENTS MADE before the
granting of the loan WILL NOT BE REFUNDED.
4. Late applications will be considered and finalised if/when funds become available.
5. Applications will not be considered unless all outstanding tuition fees are paid by the end of November
(current year). These applications will be considered once the account is settled, and if funds are available.
Current students must obtain the following credits to qualify for financial aid (credit values of subjects are
available on your study record on the UFS’s webpage – www.ufs.ac.za):
7. SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS might have to PAY an Expected Family Contribution (EFC). A prescribed
National Means Test is used to determine the exact Rand value of what is regarded as your EFC. The amount
payable (EFC) will be stated in the confirmation letter sent to successful applicants.
8. The NSFAS Board determines the maximum and minimum loan amount that may be granted by institutions.
Further information regarding these amounts is available on request.
9. You will not be charged interest on any of your previous loans if you are registered as a student on
1 April 2011. Interest will only start being charged 12 months after you have graduated or left the University.
10. It is important to know that a loan is money that is borrowed and should be repaid, whereas a bursary is money
that is awarded and does not have to be repaid.
11. If a student is academically successful, a percentage of the loan may be converted into a bursary. For example, if
a student registers for four modules and passes all four, that student will receive a full 40% bursary; if he/she
passes only three-quarters of the subjects for which he/she is registered, a 30% bursary will be awarded; and if
only a quarter of the courses are passed, 10% of the award will be converted into a bursary.
12. Interest that accrued on the component of the loan converted into a bursary will be written off on a date
determined by NSFAS.
13. Successful applicants are expected to commence with repayment of the loan once they have graduated and are
employed.
14. A final year student complying with the requirements of the full prescribed curriculum of a specific qualification
during registration must, during registration for the subsequent academic year, indicate that he/she will fulfil the
requirements for obtaining the qualification after successfully completing a specific semester examination (first
or second semester).
15. Limited NSFAS funding for postgraduate students who meet NSFAS requirements may also be available.
Postgraduate students must pay their own registration as postgraduate allocations will only be made after the
registration period.
