MORAL SOCIAL CULTURAL STUDIES
(MORAL EDUCATION)
Summer Project: Sal@h (Service and Love at Heart)
Community service is an essential way for students to explore their interests and show what they believe in,
an opportunity to define and understand their path in life. By engaging in volunteer work, students have an
opportunity to learn experientially. Not only does it help to develop an increased sense of social responsibility
– a global view of society and a heart for ‘giving back’ and helping others; it is also an opportunity to apply
academic learning to real life events. It builds relationships and ‘social connectedness’ with peers and adults,
and exposes students to diversity and multiculturalism.
This summer let us come together and drop by drop fill the ocean with one act of kindness at a time. Let our
banks be full with good wishes, smiles and kind deeds.
Individual and Community is an integral strand of the MSC Curriculum. The course helps the students to
become active members of their community, through various initiatives and learn about the importance
and value of serving others.
Dear Student,
As part of your summer project, you are required to choose any one of the activities listed below and take the
initiative of contributing to welfare of your community. During the project, you shall take up your chosen
initiative for community service, which you will record as your journey through reflection of personal
experience, relevant data, evidence of snapshots from the S@lah journey and the feedback of the beneficiary
(wherever possible).
Please note that any form of charitable donation made in form of direct money will not be considered valid
for the project.
A) Choose & Execute any one initiative from the following:
1. Spending time with a few elders from your family or community /Visiting an old age home. Age and
health conditions prevent elderly people from getting out and socializing. One of the most meaningful
things you can do for elderly people is sharing some quality time with them. Make appreciation cards for
elderly people and make them feel important. This is an opportunity for you to have meaningful
conversations with your elders. Respecting our elders should be a courtesy ingrained in every one of us.
Some of the most valuable lessons a person will learn come from their elders.
2. Conduct an interview with a philanthropist and entrepreneur in your community. (Collaborative
activity – maximum 2-3 students) The topic of the interview can be on the importance of being financially
and socially responsible and how it contributes the welfare of society. Financial responsibility is about
how we take responsibility for the way we choose to save and spend money; which can either be a force
for good or bad. It can be directed towards the benefit of a single individual or the community.
Entrepreneurs have a great part to play in the development and betterment of communities. For the
interview – write the questions you will ask. For guidelines visit

3. Household Budgeting (Individual activity). Collect the household bills and receipts for one month
and analyse your household consumption patterns. Make a balanced and effective budget that can look
for healthier and sustainable options for consumption, along with other considerations such as reduced
spending and increased savings. Present your findings to your family and discuss the benefits, demerits
and feasibility of the proposed budget. Being responsible in financial matters is a skill that has lifelong
implications. When we analyse our consumption patterns and make conscious choices, especially with
regard to sustainability, about how we spend and save money, we contribute not only to our own
wellbeing, but to that of our communities and the planet.
4. Energy Conservation Awareness (individual or group – 2-4 students). Conduct an awareness campaign
for the children of your neighbourhood on energy conservation. Give the rationale and also a few ways in
which children can contribute to energy conservation. Male poster(s) and other resources required for the
awareness campaign.
5. Plant a sapling or more (Individual or group activity). Our responsibility towards the environment is
an integral part of being a responsible individual and citizen. One way of contributing to the
environment is by planting trees which has a beneficial effect on the environment. Trees contribute to
their environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water,
preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. Click a selfie with your sapling(s)!
B) Procedures

NAME OF THE ACTIVITY OR THE PROJECT: Rooted in Responsibility : Planting trees, planting hope.
This tree planting project was a very rewarding and meaningful experience. I was able to take an active role in
improving the local environment by adding a new tree to the landscape. The process of selecting the right
sapling, preparing the planting site, and carefully placing the tree in the ground was both satisfying and
educational. I enjoyed being mindful of the tree's needs and providing the proper care to give it the best
chance of thriving. Seeing the sapling take root and begin to grow is a testament to the positive impact we
can have when we take responsibility for our environment.
My initial expectations for this project were to make a tangible contribution to the local ecosystem. I hoped
that by planting a tree, I could help improve air quality, provide habitat for wildlife, and contribute to the
overall health and beauty of the environment. I also expected to gain a deeper appreciation for the importance
of trees and the role they play in sustaining life on our planet.
I am extremely satisfied with the end results of this project. Seeing the sapling planted and beginning to thrive
has filled me with a sense of accomplishment and pride. I feel that I have made a meaningful difference, even if
it's a small one, in enhancing the local environment. Knowing that this tree will continue to grow and provide
benefits for years to come is incredibly rewarding.
4) WHAT CHANGES YOU SEE IN YOURSELF IN TERMS OF BEHAVIOR, LIFESTYLE ETC. AFTER THIS PROJECT?
This project has inspired me to be more conscious of my environmental impact and to seek out more ways to
contribute positively to the world around me. I find myself being more mindful of the trees and greenery in my
community, and I'm more inclined to support local initiatives and organizations focused on environmental
conservation and restoration. This experience has also motivated me to live a more sustainable lifestyle, such
as reducing my waste, being more conscious of my energy and water consumption, and supporting businesses
with eco-friendly practices.
5) HOW DID THIS ACTIVITY OR PROJECT BENEFIT OTHERS? HOW DO YOU ENSURE THEY CONTINUE TO GET THESE BENEFITS
EVEN AFTER THE PROJECT?
By planting a tree, this project has the potential to benefit the local community in several ways. The tree will
help improve air quality, provide shade and cooling, and create a more pleasant, natural environment for
people to enjoy. Additionally, the tree will support local wildlife, providing food and habitat for birds, insects,
and other animals.
To ensure the continued benefits of this project, I plan to regularly monitor the tree's progress and provide the
necessary care and maintenance. This includes watering, mulching, and addressing any potential issues or
threats to the tree's health. I also intend to share information about the tree's growth and the importance of
urban forestry with my local community, encouraging others to participate in similar tree-planting initiatives.
By fostering a sense of collective responsibility for the tree's well-being, I can help ensure that the benefits it
provides will be enjoyed by the community for years to come.
The primary beneficiaries of this tree planting project are the local residents and the broader ecosystem. The
tree will provide shade, improve air quality, and create a more pleasant, natural environment for the
community to enjoy.
7) WHAT WERE THE PROBLEMS FACED? WHAT MIGHT YOU DO DIFFERENTLY TO IMPROVE?
The main challenge I faced during this project was ensuring the sapling was properly planted and cared for in
the initial stages. It was important to carefully prepare the planting site, gently remove the sapling from its
container, and water it thoroughly to help the roots establish. I also had to be vigilant about monitoring the
tree for any signs of stress or pests, and address any issues promptly.
If I were to do this project again, I might consider involving more community members or volunteers to help
with the tree planting and ongoing maintenance. This could help raise awareness, foster a sense of shared
responsibility, and ensure the long-term success of the tree.
