1. Nature of Self
I do my thing and you do your thing.
I am not in this world to live up to your expectations,
and you are not in this world to live up to mine.
You are you and I am I, and if by chance we find each other, it’s beautiful.
If not, it can’t be helped.

-Fritz Perls
SELF
refers to a person’s essential being that distinguishes
them from others, especially considered as the object of
introspection or reflexive action.

is an individual person as the object of its own reflective

consciousness.

a person or a thing referred to with respect to complete

individuality.

In psychology, the notion of the self refers to a person’s

experience as a single, unitary, autonomous being that is
separate from others, experienced with continuity
through time and place. The experience of the self
includes the consciousness of one’s physicality as well
as one’s inner character and emotional life.
Aspect of Self
Hoofman Quadrinity Process - is the framework, a model for understanding ourselves and our behaviour
that includes all four aspects of self: body, emotions, intellect, and spiritual self. The quadrinity is our
whole, integrated, balanced self, embodying all four aspects: physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual.
These four aspects are interrelated and form a complex interactive system.

Physical Self
The body, including the brain is the physical dwelling place
for the three other aspects of the self. The physical self is
connected with the mind via neurological and biochemical
feedback and is the carrier of genetic information.

This also covers perceptions of our body; the image we have

of our body.
Spiritual Self
consists all of your internal thoughts and interceptions about
your values and moral standards.

the non-programmed and non-mediated aspect of the self that

is positive, pure, and willing to embody one’s authentic nature.
The spiritual self operates in harmony with the universe and is
intuitive, intentional, courageous, compassionate, peaceful, and
grounded
Intellectual Self
Hoffman believed the intellectual self was a logical and
problem-solving thought processor determining our
worldviews, values, and beliefs. Like the emotional self, the
intellectual self also houses negative thought patterns.

Negative aspects of the intellectual self are compulsive and

include a tendency to be critical, judgemental, defensive, and
argumentative. Positive traits, on the other hand, include a
tendency to be rational, understanding, knowledgeable,
creative, and logical.
Emotional Self
Contains feelings expressed through the physical body. Hoffman
noted the emotional self is where negative behaviors and moods
first appear. A negative emotional self is defined as childish with
no sense of time or space and the tendency to regress quickly.

including your personality, actions, values, beliefs, emotions,
and thoughts.

It is having a clear perception of your personality including

strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and
emotions.

It involves paying attention to oneself and consciously

knowing one's attitudes and dispositions. This mindful
understanding comprises awareness of sensations,
emotions, feelings, thoughts, the physical body,
relationships with others, and how these interact.

Allows you to understand other people, how they perceive

you, your attitude, and your responses to them at the

effective personal development across a wider range of skills
requires deliberate and focused effort.
Elements of Your Personal Development

2. A good understanding of the skills you need to develop

to achieve your vision.

3. A clear idea of the standard you need to achieve, and

how different that is from your current standard.

4. Roots of the Filipino Values/
Character
1. Family and Home environment
Child rearing practices: Child rearing can be both difficult and rewarding at the
same time. The goal of every parent is to have their child grow up to be a
respectable and resourceful adult in society.
High nurturance. The Filipino child grows up in an atmosphere of love and
affection.
Providing the children with the opportunity means, and support to pursue goals
Low independence training
Overprotection

2. Social environment
The social environment of the Filipino is characterized by a feudal structure with
great gaps between the rich minority and the poor majority. The main
components of the social environment are social structures and social systems
such as interpersonal religions and community interaction.

3. Culture and Language

Filipino culture rewards such: traits and corresponding behavioral patterns

5. History
We are the product of our colonial history, which is regarded by many as the
culprit behind our lack of nationalism and our colonial mentality. Colonialism
developed amind-set in the Filipinos which encouraged us to think of the colonial
power as superior and more powerful
Roots of the Filipino Values/
Character
6. Religion
Religion is the root of Filipino optimism and its capacity to accept life's hardships.
However, religion also instills in the Filipino attitudes of resignation and a
preoccupation with the afterlife. We become vulnerable also to being victimized
by opportunism, oppression, exploitation, and superstition.

7. Economic Environment
Many Filipino traits are rooted in poverty and hard life which is the lot of most
Filipinos. Our difficulties drive us to take risks, impel us to work very hard, and
develop in us the ability to survive. Poverty, however, has also become an excuse
for graft and corruption, particularly among the lower ranks of the bureaucracy.
Roots of the Filipino Values/
Character
8. Political Environment
The Philippine political environment is characterized by centralization of power.
Political power and authority are concentrated in the hands of the elite and the

means of communication used to reach the vast majority of the general public.
The most common platforms for media are newspapers, magazines, radio,
television, and the latest is the internet.
Roots of the Filipino Values/
Character
10. Leadership and Role Models

Filipinos look up to their leaders as role models. Political leaders are the main
models, but all other leaders serve as role models as well. Thus, when our leaders
violate the law or show themselves to be self-serving and driven by personal
interest – when there is a lack of public accountability – there is a negative
impact on the Filipino
