CHEMISTRY EXPERIMENT-7 Date: 06/08/2024

AIM:- To determine the strength of a given potassium permanganate solution in grams

per litre by titrating it against standard ferrous ammonium sulfate (Mohr’s salt)
solution.

(I) Apparatus Required- Electronic balance, Burette, Burette stand ,Pipette ,Conical flask
,Funnel,Test tube

(II) Chemicals Required– Mohr’s salt (ferrous ammonium sulfate) solution ,Potassium
permanganate solution, Dilute sulfuric acid

(III)Theory-

(a) Molecular equation:

2KMnO4 + 3H2SO4 → K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 3H2O + 5[O]

[2FeSO4(NH4)2SO4.6H2O + H2SO4 + [O] → Fe2(SO4)3 + 2(NH4)2SO4 + 13H2O] x 5

2KMnO4 + 10FeSO4(NH4)2SO4.6H2O+ 8H2SO4 → K2SO4+ 2MnSO4+ 5Fe2(SO4)3+ 10(NH4)2SO4+ 68H2O

(b) Ionic equation:

MnO4– + 8H+ + 5e– → Mn2+ + 4H2O] x 1

[Fe2+ → Fe3+ + e–] x 5
MnO4– + 8H+ + 5Fe2+ → Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O

(c) Working Formula:
A1M1V1 = A2M2V2

Where A1 and A2 are the loss or gain of e-

M1 and M2 are the molarities

V1 and V2 are the volumes

Strength = Molarity x Molar Mass

(IV) INDICATOR USED:

KMnO4 is a self-indicator

(V) END POINT:

Colourless to light pink

(VI) OBSERVATION TABLE:

(VII) CALCULATIONS:
(a). Determination of molarity of KMnO4 solution:

A1M1V1 = A2M2V2
For KMnO4 for Mohr’s salt

A1 = 5 (as MnO4– + 8H+ + 5e– → Mn2+ + 4H2O, gain of 5electrons)

V1 = Concordant value of KMnO4 obtained in the experiment.
M1 =?

–-
A2 = 1(as Fe2+ → Fe3+ + e )
V2 = 10ml
M2 = 1/20M

Now putting the values of A1, V1 ,A2 , M2 ,V2

5*M1* V1 = 1 *1/20* 10
M1=

(you can calculate M1 by putting the value of a which you will get by
experiment/titration)

(a). Determination of strength of KMnO4 solution

Strength = Molarity x Molar Mass

Strength= M1 X 158

Strength= g/liter

RESULT:
1. Molarity of the KMnO4 solution = M

2. Strength of the KMnO4 solution = g/liter

PRECAUTIONS:
1. Always rinse the burette and pipette before use.

2. Clean all the apparatus with water before the experiment.

3. Always read the upper meniscus in the burette as KMnO4 is dark in colour.

4. Use diluted sulfuric acid in the experiment.

5. Detect the endpoint when the solution gives permanent light pink colour. Don’t
keep adding the KMnO4 solution after it. Immediately note the reading of the
burette.

6. The strength of the KMnO4 solution should be taken up to three decimals.

7. Place white tile below the conical flask so that detection of the endpoint will be
easier.

8. Continue the titration at least until three concordant readings are obtained.

9. The burette should not be leaked during titration.

10. Index finger should be used for pi-petting the solution.

11. Do not blow through the pipette to expel the last drop of solution from it
simply touch the innersurface of the titration flask with the nozzle of the pipette for
this purpose.
