¿What is biological diversity?

(expositor 1)
Biodiversity, also called biological diversity, is the variety of
microorganisms, plants, animals and ecosystems that inhabit the planet.

¿What is biodiversity loss? (expositor 2)

Biodiversity loss includes the global extinction of different species, as
well as the local reduction or loss of species in a given habitat, resulting
in a loss of biological diversity. (expositor 2)

Main causes of biodiversity loss (expositor 1)

• Habitat loss and degradation ( deforestation, intensive monoculture,
urbanisation).

• Overexploitation of resources, direct exploitation such as hunting and

overfishing.

• Climate change.

• Pollution.

• Invasive alien species.

Examples of Extinct Species (expositor 1)

Red Colobus (Ghana and Ivory Coast)

This red-maned monkey has been considered extinct since the early
2000s.
Yangtze River Dolphin (China) (expositor 1)

The Chinese river dolphin, also known as baiji, is one of the oldest
freshwater mammals, declared extinct in 2006

Dodo (Mauritius Island) (expositor 2)

The dodo became a symbol of human-caused extinction, it is the most

famous extinct bird, with the last bird disappearing in the late 1700s.
The Andean Diving Duck of Colombia (expositor 2)

The extinction of this species is often blamed on the pollution of lagoons,

the destruction of its habitat, hunting, the collection of its eggs and the
introduction of rainbow trout that competed for its food. No specimen
has been seen since 1977.

Northern White Rhino (expositor 2)

Najin and Fatu are the last two northern white rhinos in the world.
Unable to reproduce, the species is technically extinct.

It is also important to know that over the last 250 years, approximately
600 species of plants have disappeared from the face of the earth.
