HISTORICAL OVERVIEW AND
HUMAN IMPACT
What is Animal
Extinction?
ANIMAL EXTINCTION
ANIMAL EXTINCTION REFERS TO THE
PERMANENT DISAPPEARANCE OF A
SPECIES FROM THE EARTH.

Causes of Extinction
Due to humans
1. HABITAT DESTRUCTION
Deforestation, urbanization, and
agricultural expansion have led to
the destruction of ecosystems that
animals depend on for survival.
2.OVERHUNTING AND POACHING
Many species have been driven to extinction
due to excessive hunting for food, fur, or
trophies.The dodo and passenger pigeon
are prime examples of species that were
hunted into extinction.
3.POLLUTION
Human activities release toxic chemicals into water, air, and soil, harming
wildlife. Plastics in the ocean, for example, kill countless marine animals
each year.
4. CLIMATE CHANGE
Global warming alters habitats and forces species to
migrate or adapt in ways that they cannot sustain.
Coral reefs, which support a vast array of marine life,
are being devastated by rising ocean temperatures and
acidification.
5.INVASIVE SPECIES
Humans have introduced non-native species to new
environments, often with disastrous effects on local
wildlife. These invasive species outcompete or prey on
native species, driving them to extinction.
Some Examples
of Animals that
went into
Extinction
Dodo
A flightless bird native
to Mauritius, the dodo
became extinct in
1681.
Passenger Pigeon
Once numbering in the billions,
the passenger pigeon was driven
to extinction by deforestation
and overhunting. The last pigeon
died in 1914.
