Subject:
Fabrication of an Adjustable Clamp Using Various Machining Methods

Objective
To design and manufacture an adjustable clamp component using various
machining methods, including plain turning, taper turning, knurling,
threading, and cylindrical/surface grinding.

Component Description
 Component Name: Adjustable Clamp
 Material: Mild Steel or Aluminum
 Dimensions:
o Overall Length: 150 mm
o Main Diameter: 50 mm
o Tapered Diameter: Reduces from 50 mm to 45 mm over 25
mm length

Key Features
 Plain Turning: Shaping the main body
 Taper Turning: Creating a tapered end for better fit
 Knurling: Textured surface for grip
 Threading: Internal and external threads for adjustability
 Cylindrical Grinding: Achieving precise dimensions
 Surface Grinding: Final finish for aesthetic and functional quality

Tools and Equipment Required

 Lathe Machine: For turning operations
 Knurling Tool: For creating a textured surface
 Taps and Dies: For threading operations
 Cylindrical Grinder: For cylindrical grinding
 Surface Grinder: For flat surface finishing
 Measuring Instruments: Calliper’s, micrometres, thread gauges
Machining Processes
1. Plain Turning
 Setup: Secure the workpiece on the lathe.
 Operation:
o Use a turning tool to reduce the diameter to 50 mm and cut to
a length of 150 mm.
 Measurement: Use calliper’s to check the diameter and length.

2. Taper Turning
 Setup: Adjust the tailstock or use a taper attachment on the lathe.
 Operation:
o Machine one end to create a 5° taper over 25 mm.
 Measurement: Verify the taper angle with a protractor or gauge.

3. Knurling
 Setup: Install a knurling tool on the lathe.
 Operation:
o Apply the knurling tool to the rotating workpiece to create a
textured pattern.
 Measurement: Ensure uniformity and definition of the knurling
pattern.

4. Threading
 Internal Threading:
o Use a tap to create threads inside the tapered end.
 External Threading:
o Use a die to cut threads on the opposite end.
 Measurement: Check thread profile using a thread gauge.

5. Cylindrical Grinding
 Setup: Mount the workpiece in the cylindrical grinder.
 Operation:
o Grind the outer surface to achieve precise dimensions.
 Measurement: Verify diameter with a micrometre.

6. Surface Grinding
 Setup: Secure the component on the surface grinder.
 Operation:
o Grind the flat surfaces to achieve a fine finish.
 Measurement: Optionally check surface finish quality.

Safety Precautions
 Always wear PPE (goggles, gloves).
 Ensure machines are properly maintained.
 Follow safe operating procedures.
