Question 1
(a) Factorise completely
i. x2 + xy − 2y 2 . [4 marks]

Solution:

x2 + xy − 2y 2 = x2 + 2xy − xy − 2y 2
= (x2 + 2xy) − (xy + 2y 2 )
= x(x + 2y) − y(x + 2y)
= (x − y)(x + 2y)

ii. x4 − (x − y)4 . [5 marks]

Solution:

x4 − (x − y)4 = x2 + (x − y)2 x2 − (x − y)2

x2 + (x2 − 2xy + y 2 ) 2xy − y 2

=
2x2 − 2xy + y 2 2xy − y 2

(b) In how many orders can the letters of the word CHICHIRI be arranged? [3 marks]

Solution:

Total number of letters = 8

Number of C’s = 2
Number of H’s = 2
Number of I’s = 3
Number of R’s = 1
8!
Number of arrangements =
2!2!3!
40320
=
2×2×6
40320
=

= 1680

Question 1 continues. . . Page 2 of 4

n n−1
(c) Given that = + 6, find the value of n. [6 marks]
2 2
Solution:

n n! n(n − 1)
= =
2 2!(n − 2)! 2

n−1 (n − 1)! (n − 1)(n − 2)
= =
2 2!(n − 3)! 2
n(n − 1) (n − 1)(n − 2)
= +6
2 2
n(n − 1) = (n − 1)(n − 2) + 12
n(n − 1) − (n − 1)(n − 2) = 12
(n − 1) [n − (n − 2)] = 12
(n − 1)(2) = 12
n−1 = 6
n = 7

Question 2
2x + 3 √
(a) Let f (x) = and g(x) = x + 3.
x−1
i. Calculate f (g(2)). [4 marks]

Solution:
√ √
g(2) = 2+3= 5

√ 2 5+3
f (g(2)) = f ( 5) = √
5−1

13 + 5 5
=
4

ii. Find the inverse function, f −1 (x). [5 marks]

Solution: Let y = f (x), so:

2x + 3
y =
x−1
y(x − 1) = 2x + 3
yx − y = 2x + 3
yx − 2x = y+3
x(y − 2) = y+3
y+3
x =
y−2
Thus, the inverse function is:
x+3
f −1 (x) =
x−2

(b) Sketch the graph of the following piecewise function

 1−x if x ≥ 1
2
y= x − 1 if − 1 < x < 1
−1 − x if x ≤ −1

[6 marks]

Solution:

Figure 1:

(c) Verify the following logical equivalence by using truth table.

(p → q) ≡ (¬p ∨ q).

[5 marks]

Solution:

p q p→q ¬p ¬p ∨ q
T T T F T
T F F F F
F T T T T
F F T T T

Table 1: Truth Table for (p → q) and (¬p ∨ q)

Conclusion: Since both expressions have the same truth values for all combina-
tions of p and q, we can conclude that:

(p → q) ≡ (¬p ∨ q)
