packages such as word processors, spreadsheets, database management, graphical
presentation, MATLAB (Octave), R and SPSS. It equips them with basic skills to use up-to-date
computer applications and software packages, to use the computer to collect, analyse and edit
data, and to manipulate, process, present and communicate information. The course shall also
explore scientific document preparation and publishing using appropriate packages such as
Office Suite and Latex.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The focus of this course is to enable students to develop an understanding of the principles and
theory behind computer applications and software packages, At the end of the course, students
should be able to:
• Create, edit and format word processing files to produce assignments, research reports,
letters and email messages.
• Use spreadsheets to create and modify graphical charts.
• Use spreadsheets to manage data and perform basic statistical analysis of research data
with the analysis tool pack.
• Create PowerPoint presentations that are composed of both text and graphical
information.
• Create and manage a flat-file database with Access.
• Write simple codes for solving real-life problems using MATLAB (Octave) and R Packages.
• Perform data analysis and visualization using R and SPSS.
• Perform scientific document preparation and publishing using appropriate packages such
as Office Suite and Latex.
