III. CONTENT NOTES
Day 1
WHAT IS CONTEMPORARY ART?
Contemporary art is art made today by living artists. As such, it reflects
the complex issues that shape our diverse, global, and rapidly changing world.
Through their different techniques and performance practices, many contemporary
artists explore personal or cultural identity, offer critiques of social and institutional
structures, or even attempt to redefine art itself. In the process, they often raise
difficult or thought-provoking questions without providing easy answers. Curiosity,
an open mind, and a commitment to dialogue and debate are the best tools with
which to approach a work of contemporary art.

WHAT TECHNIQUES ARE USED TO MAKE CONTEMPORARY ARTWORK?

Contemporary art is often looked at with a skeptical eye. The truth about
contemporary art is that it uses techniques that most people are not quite used to,
causing that skepticism to come into play. However, these techniques are quite
difficult, and all deserve our credit. It is an incredible feat to create a piece of
contemporary art, especially using these techniques. They challenge the mind and
offer unique perspectives in a way that art has never been able to do before. For
that reason, they are some of the most valuable techniques that a person can
experience through artwork.
Here are some techniques that are among the most relevant in
contemporary art today.

1. MINIMALISM
One of the artistic movements that has been most relevant throughout
the contemporary art movement is minimalism. Minimalism seeks to take away
what is unnecessary and leaving only what is essential. Minimalism is incredibly
difficult and has even made its way into being a huge part of branding and design
for companies all over the world. This is probably the most important part of
contemporary art, as it has informed so much of society. Have you noticed that
branding has gotten more minimalist over the past ten years or so? You can thank
the contemporary art movement for doing that.
2. FOUND OBJECTS
Taking something that people view as useless, and then using it in a
unique way to make artwork is one of the most important movements that currently
exist in contemporary artwork. The idea is that things that we often view as junk
are more valuable than we think that they are. Everything you find can be used to
tell a story, or to create new diverse perspectives that we are looking for when we
attend an art exhibition. The found objects movement is one of the most important
movements in all contemporary art currently.

2
3. LARGE-SCALE ART
Walter De Maria created an art piece in 1977 that included a four
hundred steel poles over one mile by one kilometer. That is incredible. Creating
something huge to express diverse perspectives in artwork is incredibly popular,
even today. Over the past forty years, large scale art, and art that includes the
environment has come into its own as one of the most important movements within
contemporary art. That is why you often see modern art pieces alongside buildings,
or as huge structures out in the open.

4. MIXED MEDIA
Mixed media is a term used to describe artworks composed from a
combination of different media or materials. A work on canvas that combines paint,
ink, and collage could properly be called a “mixed media” work.

5. NEW MEDIA ART

New media art is a 21st Century catchall term used to define all that is
related to the internet and the interplay between technology, images, and sound.

6. IMPROVISATION
In theater improvisation is the playing of dramatic scenes without written
dialogue and with minimal or no predetermined dramatic activity. Most of what is
performed is created the moment it is performed. It is done by the characters who
collaboratively improvise scenes without the use of an already prepared written
script.
CONTEMPORARY ARTWORK RELIES ON CERTAIN TECHNIQUES
With every new age of art, there are new unique techniques that define
how the movement develops. Each of these bring their own unique perspective
into the artistic community, and each is valued as a pick for a technique that is
most influential in contemporary art. Look out for these when you’re out at an
exhibition next, you’ll find that they’re much more relevant than you perhaps think
that they are.
ART TECHNIQUES AND PERFORMANCE PRACTICES IN THE LOCALITY

Contemporary art forms have been widely spread all through out the
Philippines. Many artists from different regions have exhibited several creative
and appealing artworks in their respective localities.

In Cebu province magnificent structural edifices have been eye catching

in the 21st century. Famous churches, city halls and even rotundas have shown
great impacts in the field of architecture and design. Visual arts also have been
flourishing in the province. Murals, paintings, and sculptures create great
sceneries to local and foreign tourists. In the field of music, dance and theater
Cebuano artists excel in both national and international stages. Local story tellers,
writers and poets have also published numerous literary pieces all around the
country.

participate in creating art crafts and souvenirs. They coined the terms
#supportlocal and #buylocal to promote their local products and foster tourism
within the entire province.

how to make 37 mesmerizing abstract art techniques.

INCREDIBLE FLUID ART TUTORIALS

I love abstract painting as it is the easiest way to create something cool without
spending much time and skills. You can even create a masterpiece without brushes
and easel. Fluid art is one of the easiest art techniques to create incredible abstract
pictures. To create cool pictures, you will need only canvas and acrylic paint. The main
idea of fluid art is pouring paint onto a canvas to create a unique abstract masterpiece.
Watch the tutorial and find how to create a cool picture using a string. The next idea
is even easier! Choose a couple of colors you love and start creating! Take a canvas
and pour several layers of acrylic paint and spread it using a hair dryer. You will love
the results! If you love impressionists, you can try to paint a picture using…a mop!
Yes, it sounds crazy, but watch our tutorial and you will be surprised by the method.
Check out one more way to create a cool picture. Take a plastic cup and pour your
fluid paints into it. You need to pour a little bit of each color in random layers. Place
your canvas on top of your cup and carefully flip the whole thing over. Spread the paint
by moving the canvas to let it naturally flow. Another drawing technique is stroke
painting. It’s a very meditating technique and all you need is one brush. Firstly, you
need to choose the right brush. You will easily achieve such effects as shading and
highlighting in a single movement and using only one brush.
