D. Presenting Ratios are a helpful tool for comparing things with each other in Mathematics
examples/instances of the new and in real-life situations, so it is important to know what they mean and how
lesson/Motivation they are used. Ratios occur frequently in daily life and help to simplify many of
our interactions by putting numbers into perspective like comparing and
choosing things like basketball or volleyball.
E. Discussing new concepts and To visualize ratios of two quantities, you need to master the skills on fractions
practicing new skills No. 1 because this will help you gain understanding of the concept of the lesson. In
visualizing ratios of two quantities, you need to know that a “part” is a piece of
something or one thing in a particular group, and that a “whole” represents all
the combined pieces of something or all the items belonging to a particular
group. You can represent a ratio in three forms, using the word "is to", using a
colon form “:" and in fraction form. If necessary, you can also use the phrase
form.
F. Discussing new concepts and Ratio is a comparison of two quantities. It indicates how many times one quantity is
practicing new skills No. 2 greater than the other and shows the relationship of numbers. The concept of ratio can
be applied in real life situations like comparing the number of boys and girls in a certain
class. Study the table below, the ratio that compares the number of boys and girls in
Grade 5-Marcos is 19 is to 11.
There are different ways to express ratio. The most common is to write a ratio with a
colon (:). With the data given above, the ratio of the number of boys to the number of
girls may be written as follows:
a. using colon (:)
between the two quantities
19:11
b. written as a fraction
19
11
19
Therefore, the ratio 19 is to 11 is the same as 19:11 or .
11
Another example:
Bel glued the circles and
stars on a paper.
a. What is the ratio of the number of stars to the number of circles? number of stars – 8
number of circles – 5
ratio:
8 is to 5
8:5
8
5
b. What is the ratio of the total number of shapes to the number of stars?
total number of shapes- 13
number of stars – 8
ratio:
13 is to 8
13:8
13
8
G. Developing Mastery (Leads to Directions: Study the number of the different shapes in the box and answer the
Formative Assessment) questions below. Write your answer on the space provided. (Ratio can be written in a
colon or fraction form)
