AABSTRACT
CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter provides the background, the statement of the problem, the significance,

and the scope and delimitation of the study.

Background of the study

In the bustling halls of Pio Del Pilar Elementary School, upholding a hygienic

environment stands as an utmost priority for both students and educators. A surprising fact

according to (Good Hygiene Practices Begin at School, n.d.) that a clean health-conscious setting

is not just beneficial but also indispensable for enhancing productivity and holistic well-being. In

this day of age, where health and hygiene is important, it is the collective duty of everyone to

ensure that common and proper hygiene practices are not only maintained but are ingrained in

the very fabric of the university community. The importance of proper hygiene starting at school

setting, and the benefits to the students when they implement some proper hygiene practices like

handwashing and clean water usage, therefore the university must take this into account and act

now

In recent times the world has been confronted with unpredicted challenges, like the most

recent one, The global COVID-19 pandemic. This crisis pushed the importance of the
significance of proper hygiene practices in preventing the spread of infectious diseases and

maintaining the health of individuals and communities. Within this context, The researchers want

to help the school by identifying the responsibilities needed to ensure the proper hygiene

practices of the students are ingrained with the help of the teachers. This research goal is to

investigate and document the hygiene practices that is present to every student and teacher.

By understanding the existing practices and identify the improvements, this study goal is

to contribute valuable insight and the importance of hygiene or cleanliness in the aspect of the

active participation of students in class. Through a collective effort and awareness, the

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter gives an overview of the different related literature and studies that are

relevant to the study's focus.

Literature

According to Sahmad (2020) maintaining the cleanliness of the environment in schools is

important because they provide a healthy and safe environment to the students and staff

members. Given that germs and bacteria are now part of our daily lives, keeping the environment

of the school clean will help slow the spread of illness and viruses. With this, students and

teachers must learn how to practice personal hygiene. Considering that they spend most of their

time at school, making the facilities clean and tidy from the classrooms to the hallways, canteens

and administrative offices can lead to a better environment for learning, promote academic

success, lessen the absentees of the students and have a healthier school building.
Thus, implying hygiene has a long-term impact on students and teachers' physical health.

A dirty school or environment can worsen the feelings of stress and anxiousness because it's

well-established that cleanliness plays a vital role in reducing stress levels. Good hygiene can be

linked to improved school performance, fewer cases of illness, and higher attendance rates. In

addition, by teaching students' good hygiene behaviors, it ensures that they have the tools to

protect themselves against disease and create a healthier environment where everyone can thrive.

When teachers teach in a clean atmosphere, there is usually more student participation, leading to

higher engagement. Moreover, hygiene should be seen as a critical aspect of education rather

than just a neighborhood problem for schools to take care of (360Dallas, 2023).

When it comes to clean, tidy, and sanitized school buildings it can help to promote a

successful learning environment, positively impacting faculty, students, and the community.

Therefore, schools and educational institutions should be prioritized in maintaining robust

cleanliness and hygiene standards. Also, classrooms and hallways to gyms and cafeterias should

be crystal clean to ensure a healthy learning environment. While Clean and well-maintained

sanitary facilities are crucial for the health of the students and their comfort. Therefore,

maintaining a clean school environment is rather important for the well-being and enforces

healthy habits and practices that contribute to the students’ health. It also instills a sense of

environmental responsibility like recycling, water conservation, reducing or avoiding plastics

altogether etc. in the students in the school. This study also states that a school whose

environment is clean and neat affects the students’ physical and mental health and nurtures the

growth and success of said students (McDermott, 2023).

Problems still arise, like a lack of knowledge about hygiene (Vivas et al., n.d). It reports
that a significant percentage of students had inadequate knowledge of proper hygiene, even

though most of them reported hand washing before meals. The use of soap during hand washing

was found to be relatively low. The study suggests the need for hygiene education in schools and

the development of health and hygiene intervention programs to reduce the burden of

communicable diseases among school children in rural settings.

Thus, complementing the fact common proper hygiene is an essential aspect of a person

that promotes healthy practices and disease prevention. Teaching proper hygiene in schools helps

students to develop habits that improve their overall well-being and prevent the spread of

diseases. When students learn how to wash their hands properly, they can reduce the risk of

transmitting or contracting infectious diseases. Also, by teaching students how to brush their

teeth correctly and regularly, schools can help them maintain good oral health, which can

significantly impact their overall health and well-being. Poor personal hygiene can lead to skin

infections, body odor, and other health issues. By teaching students how to maintain good

personal hygiene practices, schools can promote healthy habits that can improve their whole

quality. With the effectiveness of developing proper hygiene in schools, students can learn how

to maintain good health and prevent the spread of diseases (School Dekho, 2023).

Study

In the study that was conducted by Vijayalakshmi et al. (2023) stated that WASH,

specifically Water, Sanitation, and hygiene might be a crucial enabler of academic success.

Grounded theory was used in conducting their research. Their study aims to know the percentage
of hand washing behavior, right tooth brushing twice a day and open defecation that is related to

WASH. 110 schools that consists of 56 urban, 21 semi-urban, and 33 rural schools was their

sample, specifically in Visakhapatnam district India wherein 500 students were selected

randomly. With the data gathered by the researchers, their findings revealed that 50.9% of urban

schools, 30% of semi urban and 19.9% of rural schools, adopted the WASH practices. This

significantly indicates that there is a need in to improve knowledge among elementary school

students in Visakhapatnam India. Where school managements, teachers and parents play a

crucial role in developing students’ knowledge about WASH facilities.

Moreover, Kripalini et al. (2022) conducted a qualitative study consisting of 17 focus

group discussions (FGDs) among students and teachers in six rural secondary schools was

carried out in a rural block of the Cuttack district, Odisha. Resulting to an existing gap in health

literacy and healthy practices with respect to hygiene and sanitation, nutrition, and diseases was

observed. Many schools have adopted measures such as poster presentation, practical teaching

and demonstration, school play, and competitions at the school and in the community, which

were found to be effective for creating awareness. Improving infrastructural facilities, ensuring

availability of essential commodities, and having more health-promotional activities are required

for improving health practice. Innovative practical-oriented education at schools and improved

awareness among parents and community people would achieve better adherence to healthy

practices.

McMichael (2019) conducted a comprehensive literature review, focus on the impact of

Water, Sanitation and hygiene intervention in schools located in low-income countries. The

study found that there is substantial evidence supporting the positive outcome associated with

school based “WASH” intervention. But it's important to note the results are not consistent
across all studies. Various factors contributed to the mixed finding factors like demographic

characteristics of the students. The review highlighted the need for more research to understand

and compare the different types of “WASH” programs effectiveness, as the student help be the

change in their communities, and take approach of targeted initiatives, particularly regarding

menstrual hygiene management and girl’s school attendance. Moreover, it emphasizes the

importance of support and political commitment, sufficient funding, and effective delivery to

ensure universal access to “WASH” programs in a school setting. Additionally, on more updated

research about this topic Basaleh (2023) stated that water, sanitation, and hygiene are critical for

good health and schools should focus on improving WASH in schools to ensure that their

students stay healthy. Also, sanitation in schools is a crucial factor because this can affect the

overall student health and education. Also, there are many benefits in school of proper sanitation

and hygiene. The first one is it prevents diseases and infections to the human body. The second

one reduces absenteeism. The third one improves the learning environment. The fourth one

prevents the spread of communicable diseases from one student to another

In the study by Çelik & Yüce (2019) in which a study group consisted of 1300 students,

studying in 12 different secondary schools in the city of Kars. A mixed scanning model

consisting of quantitative and qualitative questions was used. To back up the quantitative

questions, they used open ended questions like “What do you think of cleanliness?”, “What do

you think of hygiene?”, “What do you think of personal hygiene?” and “What kind of

applications do you do to ensure your personal hygiene in one day?” Hygiene did not differ

significantly according to the gender of the student. When asked the question “What comes to

mind about cleaning” the most frequent answer was to be healthy with 20.6%. The answer is also
the same as the question “What do you think about when you think of hygiene” with it being

21.2%. “What kind of practices do you do to ensure your personal hygiene in one day?” The top

answer was my own personal cleansing with 30.4%. As a result, the student's general cleaning

and hygiene are high. People who are in a clean and hygienic environment are more attentive to

their own personal hygiene. Everyone has their own definitions of cleanliness, hygiene and

personal hygiene.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter will serve as a guide for the research. It provides a comprehensive

understanding of methods used to address the research question and objective. This chapter

covers the selection of participants, research method and design, data collection techniques,

instrument of the study and data analysis procedures. It also addresses ethical considerations in

the research process.

Research Method

The research method used is qualitative research. Precisely in-depth interviews involving

one-on-one conversations with the participants. The qualitative method revolves around the idea

of collecting and analyzing non-numerical data (e.g., text, video, or audio) to grasp concepts,

opinions, or experiences. It can be used to gather in-depth insight into a problem or generate new

ideas for research (Bhandari, P. 2020). The researcher will use this method to better understand

the views and opinions of the students and teachers of San Beda University Manila about their
experiences and their common hygiene practices in maintaining a hygienic lifestyle in the

classroom.

Research Design

The research design that will be used by the researchers is a phenomenological

qualitative research approach. This approach seeks to learn and understand what the life

experiences of human beings are. It is also the process of gaining deeper understanding of one's

insights on a particular phenomenon and how they understand it based on their knowledge and

understanding. In general, researchers use the phenomenological research approach to

understand and to find out a certain phenomenon by studying the insights and views of the one

who experienced it (Limpaecher, A. 2022). This will fit perfectly for this research because the

researchers want to find out what are the Hygiene Practices in Maintaining an Active Classroom

Environment for Students and Teachers of Pio Del Pilar Elementary School.

Sampling Method

The researchers applied the criterion sampling technique for the interviews and structured

observation for the students because the study's primary purpose is to know how to maintain

hygiene practices of the students and teachers of Pio Del Pilar Elementary School in maintaining

the active environment of a classroom. In selecting research participants, the researchers will

choose teachers who have experienced teaching in a classroom. The researchers know that these

participants will have the knowledge and ability to aid the concerns of the researchers. Criterion

sampling involves the identification of a particular criterion of importance, articulation of

this criterion, and systematic review and study of cases that meet the criterion

(betterevaluation.org, n.d.)

Instrument of the study

The instrument of the study is a semi-structured interview performed by the researchers, a

data collection method that relies on asking questions within a predetermined thematic

framework (George T., 2023). The researchers will be asking some questions to the participants

and also adding some following questions to support some ideas or add information. Then gather

all of the responses that the participants answered from the question and analyze it.

The researchers will also use a semi-structured observation for the students. The

researchers do not set a check list for what the researcher are meant to find, but are

knowledgeable on what things are the things that needs to be considered while conducting the

observation (Smi-structured Observation – iNtgrty, n.d.). The researchers would be observing the

students’ hygiene practices and the activeness of each and every one of them while classes are

ongoing,

Using the individual semi-structured interview, can establish rapport and trust with the

participants that can enhance the quality and depth of the data. Also, it can allow the researchers

to adapt and tailor questions and topics according to the needs and interests, which can increase

the relevance and usefulness of the data (Research, 2023).

Data Gathering Procedure

The primary data source of this study will come from the interview and the observation

that the researchers will conduct with the selected participants.

The study will take place at Pio Del Pilar Elementary School. The participants will be

students from grade 1 students and teachers. The researchers will request permission from the

principal and teachers of Pio Del Pilar Elementary School. Once approved, the data gathering

schedule is as follows the researcher will observe 5 classes for 2 days and interview for 1-day in

1 week. The study’s data will be based on the researcher’s observations and the interviewee’s

insights and opinions. The participants will be given enough time to answer the open-ended

questions provided by the interviewers.

Data Analysis

This will give an overview of the data analysis method that the researchers will use in this

study. Which is the narrative analysis, this is a type of qualitative data analysis which focuses on

understanding the core narratives of the individual. Having an organized data is needed so that

the researchers can greatly understand how the individuals. experienced something. The data can

also include the language that the person used and the feelings, thoughts and motivation they’ve

experienced. (Dovetail Editorial Team, 2023).

Ethical Considerations in Conducting the Study

Ethical considerations are important in conducting any research study involving any

living being or sensitive data. Adhering to ethical considerations ensures the rights and well-

being of those who are involved in the research. Additionally, it keeps the integrity and the

credibility of the research.

Informed Consent

The researchers will use a hard copy as a port to the chosen participants that will be in the

study. The consent form will contain information about the basics of the study and will give

them a choice to agree or disagree to be part of the research.

Confidentiality

The researchers will be confidential about the personal information of the participants

and will be careful in using it in the research. When given the need to introduce or cite

information about the participant, the researchers will first ask for permission and consent.

During the entire research project, all information given by the participants will not be released

without proper consent and will be kept in absolute secrecy.

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter delves into the review and analysis, interpretation of data results obtained

from observation, and some participants. The collected data is examined to address the research

question raised by the researchers.

RESEARCH QUESTION 1: What are the practices shared by students and teachers that help

in maintaining an active classroom environment in Pio Del Pillar Elementary School?

TEACHERS

Question 1: How do you define hygiene?

They stated in considering personal hygiene, all participants underscored the role of

cleanliness in maintaining overall well-being. Participant A emphasized the centrality of bodily

cleanliness, emphasizing that personal hygiene directly correlates with the body. Participant B

expanded the notion, highlighting that cleanliness extends beyond external appearances to

include internal well-being, summarizing hygiene as synonymous with both external and internal

cleanliness. Participant C introduced the term "kalinisan" in connection to hygiene, emphasizing

its role in self-care. They stressed the necessity of regular, daily cleaning practices to uphold

good health and prevent illness. The collective key points revolve around the universal

importance of bodily cleanliness, encompassing both external and internal aspects, and its role in

promoting overall health and well-being.

Question 2: Base on your observation do the students practice proper hygiene like covering their

mouth while they sneeze, usage of alcohol washing of hands and more regularly?

In promoting personal hygiene among students, the participants underscore several key

practices. First Participant A observed most of her students following basic hygiene ethics like

covering their mouth or what not, additionally Participant A is also the one making sure their

nails are clean

As Participant A stated
“I also check their nails to see if they are clean and not too long because sometimes dirt

can accumulate in the nails. Personalized a nail cutter at home, I sometimes become the one to

cut their nails to ensure it gets done, especially if their parents are too busy.”

The personalized attention extends to checking and cutting students' nails, highlighting a

holistic approach. Participant B mentioned the enduring impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,

with students maintaining handwashing practices even without mask mandates. Meanwhile,

Participant C presents a structured overview of daily practices, mask awareness, handwashing

routines, and the integration of personal hygiene education into lesson.

RESEARCH QUESTION 2: How can the common practices regarding hygiene benefit students in

Pio Del Pilar Elementary School?

TEACHERS

Question 1: Do you encourage your student to practice proper hygiene in class? Please

elaborate.

The participants collectively shared the importance of instilling proper hygiene practices

in children.

Participant A stated

“Yes, indeed, because nowadays, children are easily susceptible to illnesses. That's why I

always tell them to wash their hands, brush their teeth to avoid toothaches, and refrain from

eating candies.”

The vulnerability of today's children to illnesses prompts a focus on basics like

handwashing, teeth brushing, and avoiding sweets to prevent toothaches. Despite limited

resources, there is a concerted effort to teach responsibility, encouraging students to clean up

after themselves. Additionally, a proactive approach is taken to address illnesses promptly,

ensuring that unwell students are sent home to prevent further spread.

As Participant A stated

“That way, we can avoid spreading illnesses. If they reconcile with each other and notice

that someone isn't feeling well, I instruct them to bring the person to the clinic. Then, I call their

parents and have them sent home

Additionally, they directly correlate that good hygiene improves child performance and

overall well-being, emphasizing its impact on academic performance. Ultimately, these

educators recognize the need for children to be knowledgeable about and actively practice proper

hygiene for their health, academic success, and overall vitality.

Question 2: Do you think proper hygiene affects the activeness of the students in class? Please

elaborate.

The teachers agreed that hygiene effects students' engagement and activity levels in class.

A propounding statement includes the direct correlation between good health, cleanliness, and

mental alertness,

As stated by Participant A.

“When you're healthy, you become more energetic, so they become more active without

any health issues. That's why it's really good to always be clean before entering and to be health”
Participant B adds to this by stating

“Yes, definitely, because once they get sick, you can see that they become less energetic.

They no longer remain active when they feel something is not right with their bodies. It really

affects their studies, their participation in class”

Participant C expands on the holistic connection between overall health and hygiene,

Underlining the importance of a child's ability to respond actively to teachers and maintain an

energetic state for effective participation in class activities.

RESEARCH QUESTION 3: Why is it important to practice proper hygiene in maintaining

an active classroom environment in Pio Del Pilar Elementary School?

TEACHERS

Question 1: What are your opinions on the importance of practicing proper hygiene in the

classroom?

The participants collectively answered the importance of instilling proper hygiene

practices in children not only for individual health but also for the broader community.

Participant A emphasizes that these habits extend beyond the school environment, as children

can influence their siblings and promote hygiene practices at home

By the statement.

“That's important, of course, for health, and proper hygiene is not only applied here at
school but also at home. Through that, there's a possibility that not only are they helping

themselves, but they can also assist their siblings”

Participant B underscores the necessity of teaching hygiene both at school and at home,

recognizing the role of parents in fostering cleanliness habits that can be carried from home to

school. Participant C expands on the community impact, highlighting how children's knowledge

of hygiene contributes to a cleaner school environment. Knowledge of practices like

handwashing and proper waste disposal ensures that the school remains clean and unpolluted. In

essence, the consensus is that proper hygiene education benefits not only the individual students

but also their families and the overall cleanliness of the school environment.

Question 2: Do you think school should raise more awareness about the importance of hygiene

practices in the classroom? Please elaborate.

The participants stated that cleanliness is crucial at all educational levels and does not

discriminate based on age.

Participant A said

“Yes, hygiene is really important. It doesn't discriminate between primary and

intermediate levels; being clean is essential. Of course, just because someone is a child doesn't

mean they should not be clean”

Participant B discusses the "WINS" program, a Department of Education initiative aimed

at creating awareness about hygiene practices among children and their parents. The goal is to

establish these practices as routines that extend seamlessly from home to school, making hygiene
an ingrained habit. Participant C highlights the consistent efforts of the school to remind children

about proper hygiene, not only within the school premises but also in the broader community.

The participants agree that fostering good hygiene practices in school goes beyond the

classroom, shaping children to carry these habits into their homes and communities.

OBSERVATION:

STUDENTS

The observational method used by the researchers was structured observation. The

method was chosen because the participants were teachers and their students in session. To not

disturb the class, structured observation was the most viable method.

The observations took place in Pio Del Pilar Elementary School (address noong school),

inside the classrooms. The classrooms were used by both teachers and students alike. The rooms

were neatly decorated and was an encouraging place to learn.

The demographic of the participants observed were grade 1 pupils, ages 6-7 years old,

both male and female. The students were very energetic, playful, and sometimes obedient. The

other participants involved were the teachers of the pupils who gave valuable information about

the health practices inside the school.

The data collection procedure started with the observation of the students in the

classroom, the researchers utilized tools such as field notes in observing the behaviors of the

pupils in the duration of 2 class sessions. The other participants such as the teachers were

interviewed with a set of questions and recorded with a phone using the recording app.
The observations that all the researchers gathered were that the practices of the students

in class were there. The teachers were informing them how practice it and why it is important.

Like bathing every day, washing hands after and before you eat, and many more. The students do

these practices but there are times where the pupils wouldn’t do it such as biting the pencils,

biting their nails, coughing or sneezing without covering the mouth. The teachers would

reprimand them if they got caught but would still do it in secret this time. The teachers when

interviewed were knowledgeable in the topic at hand. They knew that health was not only

physical but also mental. They all had similar answers, but it was meaningful and smart. They

knew about physical health and how to maintain it. And how physical health can affect one’s

mental health.

Overall, the students know the practices and the importance of it but since they are young

children with young minds, they sometimes do forget or don’t grasp the importance of these

health practices that they should follow. Even though the teachers do their best to educate the

students about this. They are too young to fully maintain these practices especially that they can

be naughty from time to time.

and the recommendations of the researchers

Summary

Maintaining hygiene practices is one of the most important things when it comes to the

new normal in school while there is COVID-19 virus. Pio Del Pilar Elementary School is a

school where researchers observe the surroundings of the classroom. This study shows how they

maintain hygiene practices. With gathered information, the researchers aim to provide insights

on how they maintain hygiene practices.

The research method used in this study is qualitative research. The data was gathered by

conducting an interview for the teachers and observation for the students. Lastly, the gathered

data was analyzed through narrative analysis.

Conclusion

The research gathered teachers from Pio Del Pilar Elementary School to share their

knowledge on maintaining proper hygiene practices. Maintaining proper hygiene should be one

of the priorities in a school environment to provide good quality learning for the students and the

teachers. The interviewed teachers of Pio Del Pilar Elementary School provided insights on how

they encourage their students to maintain proper hygiene practices in a school environment.

From the responses of the interview, the researchers found the following key points on proper

hygiene practices: (1) Healthy body creates an active and healthy mind, (2) Lessens the spread of

diseases, (3) Creates a quality learning environment.

1.Healthy body creates an active and healthy mind

Maintaining proper hygiene practices helps the students to stay motivated and active

inside the classroom. All 3 participants stated that maintaining proper hygiene practices could

greatly affect their performances when socializing with other classmates, reciting in class and

answering their school works. This is beneficial for the students as it teaches them to be

responsible individuals who know how to maintain proper hygiene practices. When the

participants encourage the students to wash their hands properly before and after eating, to make

use of alcohol for sanitizing and more proper hygiene practices, the students will learn to apply

this to their everyday life. This can be a way for the students to develop their self-confidence.
Additionally, the participants stated that some students encourage other students to maintain

proper hygiene practices.

2. Lessens the spread of diseases

Proper hygiene practice aims to lessen the spread of diseases. Inside a classroom, the

grade 1 students of Pio Del Pilar Elementary school are prone to diseases. According to the

participants, young children are known to have a weak immune system, so maintaining proper

hygiene practices could help strengthen their immune system and avoid less diseases. The

participants encourage the students to simply cover their mouth when they cough or sneeze, to

not go to school when the students are sick and to participate in their “WINS” program every

Monday which is a proper hygiene program.

3.Creates a quality learning environment

Maintaining proper hygiene practice creates a quality learning environment for the

teachers and the students. All participants agreed that students as young as grade 1 should know

how to maintain proper hygiene practices to help them stay clean and healthy. An organized

environment with active students and teachers provides a quality learning because everyone is

rather positive and focused. One of the participant stated that If the students are ‘healthy’ and

keeps themselves clean they would be very active and would always be ready to participate in

class. Maintaining proper hygiene practice results to a good flow of learning without any

distractions of sickness and unorganized stuff inside a classroom.

Recommendation

With future studies that correlate to the topic, this research serves as a steppingstone in

improving knowledge regarding proper hygiene. The research can be improved and strengthen

thru the help of larger participant or population. After analysis of the collected data, the research

would like to impose this

1. Use sites like google scholar to ease up finding source, but make sure to double check if its

credible

2. The school should continue and even enhance awareness programs that emphasize the

importance of hygiene practices. These programs can involve both students and parents, fostering

a collaborative effort to instill good habits beyond the school environment.

3. Conduct longitudinal studies to observe the long-term impact of hygiene education on

students. Follow cohorts of students over several years to track the persistence of hygiene habits

and their correlation with academic performance and overall well-being.

4. Delve deeper into the role of parental involvement in shaping students' hygiene practices.

Explore effective strategies for engaging parents in hygiene education, emphasizing the

importance of a collaborative effort between schools and families.

5. Explore hygiene practices in classrooms across diverse cultural settings. Investigate how

cultural differences influence the perception and adoption of hygiene habits, contributing to a

more comprehensive understanding of effective hygiene education strategies.

6. Interviews for this study were conducted during school days, thus this became the reason why

the researchers could only conduct an interview with fewer teachers.

7. Future researchers should also consider the factors such as the time of the observations and the

number of interviewees to make more accurate data.

so una po, how do you define hygiene?  Hygiene, from the word "hygiene" or
kalinisan in Filipino, pertains to
oneself, the need to keep oneself in
order. It requires regular cleaning
every day to maintain good health and
stay away from illness.

Based on your observations do the students  Yes, especially I teach them that when
practice proper hygiene like covering their they cough, as they no longer wear
mouth while they cough or sneeze, usage of face masks now that it's like the new
alcohol washing of hands and more, normal returning to the way it was
regularly? before, they should cover their mouths
to avoid spreading illness to their
classmates. I also check their nails to
see if they are clean and not too long
because sometimes dirt can
accumulate in the nails. If they don't
have a nail cutter at home, I
sometimes become the one to cut their
nails to ensure it gets done, especially
if their parents are too busy. Then, we
have a handwashing routine; we go
downstairs to wash our hands, and if
you want, you can check some
documents. After eating or before
eating, they wash their hands, at least
that. We also have alcohol here, and
there are those who donate alcohol to
avoid getting sick.
Tapos po, Do you encourage your students to  Yes, indeed, because nowadays,

them to wash their hands, brush their
teeth to avoid toothaches, and refrain
from eating candies. If they eat
something sweet, they should
immediately brush their teeth. Of
course, when they go home, they do
these things because they don't have
toothbrushes here. When they eat and
there's a mess, they wipe it because
I'm teaching them to be responsible
individuals, even though they're only
in Grade 1. They learn to get a cloth,
wipe the table to keep it clean, and
pick up the mess. That way, we can
avoid spreading illnesses. If they
reconcile with each other and notice
that someone isn't feeling well, I
instruct them to bring the person to the
clinic. Then, I call their parents and
have them sent home to prevent the
spread of illness because there's a
trend of hand-foot rashes going
around. It's really effective because
the children listen when you tell them
to wash their hands, use soap, and
alcohol.
Do you think that proper hygiene affects the  Yes, of course. Naturally, if a person

health is active, making them always
ready to participate. However, if
someone is feeling lethargic due to
some discomfort, it affects their
performance in school. They may
have difficulty writing or answering
recitations because they are not feeling
well. When you're healthy, you
become more energetic, so they
become more active without any
health issues. That's why it's really
good to always be clean before
entering and to be healthy.

course, just because someone is a

spreading illnesses within the
household. That's it.

PARTICIPANT 2

1.How do you define hygiene? "Hygiene is about cleanliness. Cleanliness

applies not only to the external aspect of our

bodies but also extends to our internal well-

being. Hygiene; Cleanliness."

Based on your observation, do the students Yes, they really practice that because since

practice proper hygiene liike covering their the onset of the COVID pandemic, they have

mouth while they cough or sneeze, usage of become accustomed to it, so they really

alcohol, washing of hands and more, regularly practice it. Before, when they enter the

classroom, we have alcohol available. So

before they eat, they really wash their hands,

and after washing their hands, both before and

after, they use alcohol.

handwashing. We focus on handwashing,

starting with the basics because they are in

Grade 1. We began with handwashing,

cleaning their nails, things like that, changing

clothes, and bathing every day. We really

encourage it because we want to avoid them

getting sick. Once they get sick and miss

classes, it will affect their grades. Children

nowadays have weak immune systems, so we

really need to practice simple handwashing

for them. Also, every Monday, we have

handwashing sessions outside.

Do you think that proper hygiene affects the Yes, definitely, because once they get sick, you

longer remain active when they feel something is

not right with their bodies. It really affects their

studies, their participation in class, and

sometimes their classmates might notice and

not only for them but also for their parents

to school.

Do you think that schools should raise more Yes, because we have a program called WINS

awareness about the importance of hygiene (Washing In...) or something like that. Each

has a program like that to create awareness

among the children and their parents. The

goal is to practice that system so that it

becomes a routine for them. It's not just about

being told by the teacher to wash their hands;

it becomes a system for them, extending from

their homes to school. Even without

reminders, it becomes their routine because

they know the consequences of not practicing

good hygiene, both for washing and keeping

their bodies clean.

Table 3.
PARTICIPANT 3

How do you define hygiene Hygiene. Okay, of course, cleanliness of the

body. Any part of the body, as long as it's

personal hygiene, cleanliness of the body.

Whatever part of our body, that's where my

understanding of personal hygiene is focused.

Cleanliness, that's what it's about, the

cleanliness of our body.

Based on your observation do the students Of course, we have informed the children

practice proper hygiene like covering their about these practices, especially after the

mouth while they cough or sneeze, usage of pandemic. Everyone is wearing masks, and

alcohol, washing of hands and more regularly they have their own bottles of alcohol.

Actually, we provide alcohol for them. Here it

is, we have alcohol available. So, those are

our daily practices. Every Monday, we have a

handwashing session for all grade levels. We

document this and forward it to the relevant

person who then sends it to the division

office. These are our daily practices. As for

our lessons, we integrate teaching them how

to incorporate personal hygiene into their

daily lives. We always encourage this. It's a

crucial part of our lessons because it's very

important for the children. As they grow up,

they know how to maintain cleanliness in

their bodies. We consistently encourage them

from kindergarten onwards. This continues

throughout the higher grade levels.

Do you encourage your students to practice Of course we always encourage them to

proper hygiene in class? please elaborate. practice proper hygiene because it is

important for them. We also make sure that

we include it in our lessons. So that while the

kids continue to grow they will know how to

maintain the cleanliness of their bodies. Thats

why we always encourage them to practice

proper hygiene

Do you think that proper hygiene affects the Okay, so, having proper hygiene really

activeness of the students in class? Please updates the practices and activities of a child.

elaborate Because if you are healthy, if a child is clean,

healthy, and practices good hygiene, their

body stays healthy too. It's something to think

about. So, when it comes to class, they can

respond to the teacher's questions and

participate in the activities assigned by the

teacher. Because if you are weak, of course, if

you don't have proper hygiene, your body

might not be in good shape. So, they won't be

able to respond well because they won't be

energetic. That's one of the factors that can

affect them. So, it's really necessary for a

child to be knowledgeable about proper

hygiene because they should really know it.

So that when they come to school, they are

active.

What are your opinions on the importance of So, this is necessary, the number three

practicing proper hygiene in the classroom? question, because it's really important for the

school, so that the school also has a good

environment. If a child knows about proper

hygiene, it doesn't contribute to the pollution

of the school environment. So, if they know

the practice, if they know the practice of

handwashing, proper disposal of waste, of

course, the school environment remains clean,

right? So, if they know how to dispose of

their waste, their spit, they know where. So,

that's a significant part that will help our

school environment.

Do you think that schools should raise more When the school is consistently finding ways,

awareness about the importance of hygiene the children are always reminded of proper
practices in the classroom? Please elaborate. hygiene. Not only in the environment but also

inside the classroom, both inside and outside

the school. It's not limited to within the

school. It can extend to the surroundings, to

those around them, to the community. So, if

the child is consistently reminded, it stems

from the examples set in school. Because they

spend more time at school, right? So, when

they go outside, they carry and apply what

they've learned. It's not just within the school;

that's why it's necessary for them at school.

So that when they go home and to their

community, they can apply it. So, maybe,

that's just how it is. That's it. That's my

explanation.
