Reading
F. Read the text. For each question (1-5) choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D).

What is the World Wide Web?

Did you know that the Internet and the World Wide Web are not the same? The Internet is a large network
of computers, and the hardware that connects them. The World Wide Web is all the webpages on this
network, and the software that lets people build and visit these pages.
In 1989 the World Wide Web was invented by Sir Tim Berners-Lee. He wanted to find an easy way for
scientists to share information. The Internet already existed; it was developed in the 1960s and it was used
mostly in universities. There were already documents that could store information on computers, too, but
no one had tried to use the Internet to link these documents together. It was difficult to move information
from one computer to another.
Tim came up with three technologies to allow all computers to understand each other (HTML, URL and
HTTP). These are similar to languages. He also made the world’s first web browser and web server. The
World Wide Web opened the Internet, and not just scientists were interested.
All at once people were connected in a new way and could easily get information, share information and
communicate with each other. As the web developed, people started communicating and sharing more.
Search engines became better at processing information and people started using social networking sites,
blogs and video sharing.

A a collection of sites A interesting only for scientists
B a network of many computers B not useful to scientists

C make the Internet larger C the invention of video
D make it easy for universities to have online D new ways of sharing information
