a 75% level of accuracy;

Performance Standard:
The learners demonstrate understanding of parts and functions of animals and importance to
humans .

Most Essential Learning Competency:

B. Classify animals into groups based on their characteristics.

C. Appreciate the importance of having pets/animals at home.

II. Content Standard: Characteristic of Animals

III. Learning Resources:
A. Reference : K-12 MELC- Guide p 497
B. Materials : Manila Paper , Marker, Powerpoint, Pictures
C. Subject Integration:

IV. Procedure 5A’s

Teachers’ Activity Pupils’ Activity

Basic Tasks:

 Prayer
 Greetings
 Setting of rules

A. Reviewing Past Lesson

Ask students:

"What do you know about animals?"

"What are some ways animals are different from each

other?"

· Write their answers on the board to activate prior

knowledge.
B. Establishing a purpose of the new lesson
( Motivation )
You learned that animals have different actions or
movements. They use their body parts to get to places
where they can get food and to avoid their enemies.
What more do you know about their characteristic?

C. Presentation of New Lesson

Today, you will learn about the unique

characteristics that animals have and why these are
important.

· Define Characteristics:

Explain what "characteristics" are (e.g., physical

traits or behaviors that help identify animals).

· Introduce Key Characteristics of Animals:

List and explain common characteristics with

examples.

 Body Covering: Hair/fur, feathers, scales,

skin.
 Warm-blooded vs. Cold-blooded: Explain
with examples (mammals vs. reptiles).
 Habitat: Land, water, or both.

· Animal Classification Groups: Go over the main

groups (mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, and
amphibians) and the main characteristics of each.

D . Discussion of New Concepts and Presentation of

New Skills # 1

(Guided Activities)

· Flashcard Activity: Hand out flashcards with

animal characteristics (feathers, scales, warm-
blooded, etc.). Call out an animal (e.g., penguin, frog,
dog), and have students hold up a flashcard if it
matches a characteristic of the animal called out.

· Discussion: After each animal, discuss why those

characteristics are important for that animal's
survival. The body of animals is covered in different
ways such as skin, fur, hair, shell and scales in order
for them to survive.

E .Discussion of New Concepts and Practicing New

Skills # 2

(Differentiated Group Activities)

Let’s have a group activity. I’m going to group you

into 4 groups..

But before you do this, let’s first develop a standard

or rubric that will be our basis for scoring your group
work.

Group 4

The class will be divided into four groups. Each

group will give 5 examples of animals according to
the wrapping or covering and explain its significance.
Group 1 – hair/feathers
Group 2 – shell
Group 3 – scales
Group 4 – skin

F . Discussion of New Concepts and Practicing New

Skills # 3

Independent Practice

Worksheet: Distribute a worksheet with various

animals for individual classification. Students will
categorize each animal into the correct group (e.g.,
mammals, reptiles) and list at least one characteristic
of each animal

G . Finding Practical Application of concepts and

skills in daily living.
( Health and Values Integration )

Do you have pets at home?

How do you take good care of them?
Why do you need to take care of your animals at
home?
Is it true that animals are mans best friend?
If so, in what way? Can you give and example?

H .Making Generalization
Ask each student to name one animal characteristic
they learned and explain why it is useful for that
animal.

The body of animals is covered in different ways

such as skin, fur, hair, shell and scales in order for
them to survive.

I .Evaluating Learning

Directions: Group the animals that have the same

covering on their body.
1. frog
2. bear
3. shrimp
4. oysters
5. turtle
6. rat
7. elephant
8. tilapia
9. snake
10. bird
