Listening and Speaking
LISTENING AS A MODE

 Auditory Elements: Listening involves the reception of

auditory information.

 In multimodal texts, this can include spoken words,

music, sound effects, and more.
SPEAKING AS A MODE:
 Verbal Expression: Speaking is the active use of
language to convey meaning.

 In multimodal texts, this can include spoken

words, scripted dialogue, or other forms of verbal
expression.
Examples of Multimodal
Texts Involving Listening
and Speaking:
Video Presentations:
 A video presentation often involves
spoken words (speaking)
accompanied by visual aids, graphics,
and possibly background music
(listening).
Interactive Learning Modules:
 Online courses or interactive learning
modules often combine spoken
instructions (speaking) with visual
elements like slides, animations, and
interactive quizzes (listening and
visual elements).
Multimedia Presentations:
 Presentations that use a
combination of spoken words,
visual slides, and possibly
interactive elements create a
multimodal experience.
Podcasts:
 Podcasts are primarily auditory
(listening) but may also include
visual elements in the form of cover
art, episode descriptions, or
accompanying videos.
REMEMBER

Studying multimodal texts teaches us that information

can come in many forms—spoken, written, visual, and
digital. Just as we need to use different senses to fully
understand the world, learning to navigate these texts
helps us become better thinkers, communicators, and
problem-solvers. It reminds us that being open to
different ways of learning makes us more adaptable and
prepared for life’s challenges.
