What kind of practical functions do you think our first few art
forms served?

Paintings are arts that are acquired to be displayed or installed

by collectors or homeowners who wants an art piece in their space. On
the other hand, artworks which serves purposes other than being
displayed are called functional art. Functional art refers to attractive
things that fulfill utilitarian needs, occupying the precarious gap
between fine art and the ordinary. The genre is astonishingly broad,
encompassing everything from furniture and lighting to dishes and
even literature. Functional arts incorporate intellectual, emotional
sensibility, and as well as a dose of archaic beauty. In simple terms,
functional art merge the aesthetic side of art and the usefulness of it in
ordinary life. For instance, art like pottery serves as a pot for holding
liquids or plates or bowls from which food can be served. Art pottery is
any ceramic object made from clay and other raw materials that is
intended to be ornamental rather than functional. These objects might
be tiles, dinnerware, figurines, pots, or anything else. Because of their
artistic merit, these potteries are sometimes called fine art. They are
classified as objects in archaeology. These kinds of arts are widely
spread in Asia especially in China. Rare kinds of art pottery are quite
expensive due to the fact that it is made intricately and the amount of
work necessary is vast. Clay is an example of materials utilized to
create this art and sometimes artists source their supplies with limited
stream. Hence, high-end pottery is indeed luxury due to its difficulty to
produce.

2. What do you think were the materials that people in the past
source from their environment to be able to create such
functional art forms?

Pottery has been there ages ago, for instance, in Neolithic period.
These were one of the earliest art forms in history. It represents their
culture, tribe, and lifestyle. Pottery is defined as clay that has been
shaped, dried, and burned into a vessel or ornamental item, generally
with a gloss or finish. Clay is a natural material extracted from the soil
that has decomposed over millions of years from rock within the
planet's crust. Decomposition happens when water erodes, breaks
down, and dumps the rock. It is critical to understand that a clay body
is not the same as clay. Clay bodies are clay combined with additives
that give the clay distinct qualities when handled and burnt; hence,
pottery is formed from a combination of clay and other materials rather
than raw clay.

The Philippine pottery tradition reached its pinnacle between 200 BC

and 900 AD, during the Metal Age, when the people of the Philippines
were exploring specialized ceramic shapes, patterns, and processes.
This time period is known as the Golden Age of Pottery. Nevertheless, a
drop in the pottery industry was observed during the colonial era when
commerce in the Philippines started to diminish due to the upheaval
and displacement of local inhabitants and economies brought on by
the Manila Galleon Trade.

In today’s era, pottery is frequently regarded as calming and healing.

Your body and mind naturally work together to spin clay while you
focus on your creative aspirations and objectives. This reflective,
artistic activity can clear your thoughts and make you less concerned
about the outer world. It is said that pottery is a great way for creative
outlet, reduces stress, improves focus, increases optimistic output, and
many others.
