RATIONALE
Since the invention of indoor plumbing, the materials used to construct the pipes have undergone
several transformations. For many years, metal and ceramic pipes were the most popular. Many
modern dwellings may still see galvanized steel, clay, or cast iron pipe. Copper has supplanted
galvanized steel in plumbing systems since the 1970s and is now the most popular metal.

On the other hand, plastic pipes play a crucial role in plumbing. ' When compared to copper,
various plastic water and sewage pipes are simpler to deal with. A significant factor in their rise to
prominence in the 1960s was the development of plastic manufacturing techniques that made these
pipes more useful in general.

AIM/BENEFITS

Plumbers use various kinds of plumbing pipes such as UPVC plastic pipes for different reasons.
You'll need to know which to utilize for specific plumbing systems if you want to have a rewarding
career as a plumber. We offer an associate degree program in plumbing and heating technology that
teaches you all you need to know about plumbing in residential and commercial settings. Students
will learn the fundamentals of heating and plumbing theory and practice in a laboratory
environment.

COURSE OUTCOMES

 ABS: Short for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, this sturdy plastic was one of the first
plastics used for residential plumbing. ABS pipes are always black and tend to be softer than
PVC. They are mainly used for vent and drain lines, along with other outdoor underground
uses where cold temperatures are common.
 CPVC: This type of PVC has been treated with chlorine, making it more resistant to high
temperatures and pressures. It's commonly used in industrial plumbing and residential hot
water lines that standard PVC wouldn't be suited for.
LITERATURE REVIEW
Different Types of Domestic Plumbing Pipes

PEX Pipe
PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) is a durable
plastic piping that's used to supply water. It is
rigid enough to withstand the pressures of
water supply but flexible enough to weave
throughout walls, ceilings, basements,
and crawlspaces. It is also far less expensive
compared to many other piping materials.

PEX pipes commonly come in 1/2-inch and

3/4-inch diameters, but they can be found in
diameters up to 3 inches. PEX pipes are easy
to cut and join. Plus, they're typically color-
coded red for hot water and blue for cold
water.

Use for: Use PEX pipe as hot and cold water distribution lines within the house. PEX is also used
to cycle reclaimed water; this pipe is marked purple to identify the type of water and distinguish it
from potable water. Also use PEX for hydronic piping and distribution, such as for radiators.

PVC Pipe

The Spruce / Kevin Norris

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipe is a white plastic pipe

material that's commonly used for waste lines. It
initially gained popularity because it was lighter and
easier to work with than traditional galvanized steel
pipe. It's also inexpensive and fairly durable.

PVC pipe is moderately easy to install and requires

little more than a hacksaw and a miter box to cut. It
glues together with solvents.

Use for: PVC pipe and fittings are not rated for
highly pressurized applications. Since building codes limit PVC pipe to drain, waste, and vent
(DWV) applications, use PVC pipe for drainage and vent lines within the house. PVC pipe is
commonly used for below-ground exterior irrigation water supply.
Rigid Copper Pipe

The Spruce / Kevin Norris

Copper pipes are primarily pure copper as

evidenced by their shiny reddish-brown
appearance. Rigid copper is often used for
water supply lines within the home. It is
valued because it does not come with health
risks unlike other pipe materials, such as
plastics, that can leach chemicals.1

Rigid copper also is quite durable, and it can

be cut easily with a tubing cutter or hacksaw.
However, it is fairly expensive.

Use for: Rigid copper pipe is routinely used

for sinks, showers, tubs, and other fixtures. Though termed "rigid," rigid copper pipe can be bent to
some degree. Inserting a spring in the pipe, filling it with sand or salt, or using a special tool are
three ways to safely bend copper pipe.

ABS Pipe
ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) pipe is
made of a thermoplastic resin and looks very
much like PVC pipe except it is black and
slightly softer. It's mainly used as a vent and
drain line.

This pipe is fairly durable, though sun exposure

can warp and degrade it, and it's a cost-effective
choice. But like PVC, it isn't accepted by
building codes everywhere, so check your local
regulations.

Use for: Use ABS pipe for both indoor or outdoor plumbing, but when it is used indoors restrict the
pipe to drain, waste, and vent (DWV) applications.
Electrical Conduit Types

Electrical Conduit
An electrical conduit is a tube in which electrical wires are housed for a variety of building or
structural applications. Conduit protects wires as well as any individuals who may come into close
proximity to the wires. The US National Electrical Code (NEC), and local building codes,
determine whether or not a conduit should be used in a certain installation as well as which type of
conduit should be used.

Rigid metal conduit (RMC) has a thick wall and is

constructed of either aluminum or galvanized steel. This
variety is one of the most heavy-duty types of conduit used
in many industrial applications. Rigid metal is one of the
more costly options but offers additional strength.

Galvanized Rigid Conduit

Galvanized rigid conduit (GRC) has the thickest walls of
all electrical conduit and is the heaviest. GRC is regarded
by electricians for its superior corrosion resistance, and it protects wiring from electromagnetic
interference (EMI). GRC can be used in outdoor or indoor applications and can be exposed,
concealed and buried.

PVC Conduit

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) conduit is the most popular

type of non-metallic conduit and has several advantages:

 Versatile and easy to install

 Typically less expensive that other options
 Lightweight
 Available in a variety of wall thicknesses
 Works well in concrete and underground
Despite its many advantages in other applications, PVC
conduit isn't recommended for use in areas with direct
sunlight exposure. Sunlight can break down the material
over time.
How to Bend Conduit
Electrical metallic tubing can be bent with
a special conduit bender tool to
accommodate a variety of electrical
applications. Measure the installation area
to determine the angle and length of
conduit you need. You’ll also need to
calculate the necessary deduct length or
takeup, which is the amount of extra length
that'll be lost in the bend. This length will
vary depending on the diameter of the
conduit you’re using, but many conduit
benders have guide marks to help you
calculate. After you’ve determined the
correct deduct length, mark where the bend
should go and make any necessary cuts on
the end. Use a conduit reamer or other tool
to remove any burrs at the end of the
conduit. When bending a piece of conduit,
keep pressing firmly on the heel of the
conduit bender with your foot and pull
back on the handle with steady pressure to keep the tool from slipping.

Irrigation Pipes Commonly Used in Agricultural

The characteristics of agricultural PE
irrigation pipes
1. Reliable connection: the pipe systems are connected by electric heating and the strength of
the joint is higher than the strength of the pipe body.
2. Good low-temperature impact resistance: during winter construction, due to the good impact
resistance of the material, pipe brittleness will not occur.
3. Good stress crack resistance: low notch sensitivity, high shear strength and excellent scratch
resistance, outstanding environmental stress crack resistance.
4. Good chemical resistance: the pipeline can withstand the corrosion of a variety of chemical
media. And the chemical substances in the soil will not cause any degradation to the
pipeline.
5. Aging resistant and long service life.
6. Good wear resistance: The comparative test of the wear resistance of the pipe and the steel
pipe shows that the wear resistance of the pipe is 4 times that of the steel pipe.
7. Good flexibility: The flexibility of the pipeline makes it easy to bend, and obstacles can be
bypassed in engineering by changing the direction of the pipeline.
8. Water flow resistance is small. It's easy to carry.
9. Various new construction methods: In addition to traditional excavation methods, a variety
of new non-excavation techniques such as pipe jacking, directional drilling, lining pipes,
cracked pipes, etc. can also be used for construction.
