Persecution of Prophet at The Hands of The Quraish
The Holy Prophet openly declared that the idols were of no use and must not be
worshipped. He taught the people to adopt the rights ways and forbade them
from evil. Instead of taking his teachings positively, the Quraish left no stone
unturned to discourage the new converts and to reduce the increasing popularity
of the Holy Prophet and the new faith.
They adopted every method to oppose the Holy Prophet and his new
companions. Some of the methods they adopted included laying thorns and
rubbish in the way of the Holy Prophet, mocking him while he offered prayers and
spreading false rumors that he was a poet, a wizard or insane. When despite all
opposition, the Holy Prophet remained firm in his mission like a rock, the Makkan
chiefs approached his uncle, Abu Talib to stop him from preaching of Islam and
warned him to be prepared for the consequences if he did not stop his nephew.
When Abu Talib talked to the Holy Prophet on the issue, the Holy Prophet said:
O’ my beloved uncle! I will not stop the preaching Islam even if they place the
Sun in my right hand and the Moon in my left. Either Allah will reward me with
success, or I will sacrifice my life for my mission.
Hearing this, Abu Talib, assured his support to the Prophet and told him to go and
say what he liked.
When Quraish chiefs failed to convince Abu Talib, they doubled their persecution
against the Holy Prophet and his followers. He was abused and stone were
thrown at him on the streets by the wicked people like Abu Jahal. Once they
placed dirty intestines of a camel on his neck while he was prostrating in Prayer.
The slaves who embraced Islam were tortured the most. Hazrat Bilal, an
Abyssinian salve, was forced to lie down on the burning sand at mid-day and a
heavy stone was placed on his chest, so that he could not move at all. He and
other slaves like him were beaten and dragged in the streets of Makkah so that
they might give up Islam. Hazrat Yasir and his wife Summayyah were tortured to
death. Despite all torture and persecution at the hands of Quraish, the Holy
Prophet and his followers stuck to their faith and preached it further.
Religious Causes: The main teaching of Islam is to believe on One Supreme God,
Allah. This was not acceptable to the Makkans as they were addicted to idol
worship which they believed descended from their forefathers. They rose against
Islam and the Muslims.
Social Causes: As the Holy Prophet stood for social equality, justice and
brotherhood and preached against discrimination between the rich and the poor,
it was not bearable to the arrogant Quraish chiefs. So they started their violent
struggle to save their social status and superiority.
Moral Causes: Quraish were used to all kinds of sinful acts like drinking wine,
gambling, practicing adultery ()رى, infanticide (killing newly born girls) and
many more. They were not ready to give up their evil practices so they hated the
religion of Islam.
Political Causes: The political authority of the Quraish was also challenged and
threatened by Islam. They thought that with the spread of the message of Islam,
the Holy Prophet would emerge as undisputed political leader of the whole
region. That is why they tried their most to stop the spread of Islam.
Economic Causes: The Holy Kaaba was not only a place of worship; it was the
centre of economic activities of Arabia. As the Quraish were considered the
guardians of Holy Kaaba, their trade caravans travelled safely far flung areas and
nobody harmed them because of the respect the Quraish enjoyed as the
guardians of Holy Kabba. Now they feared that with the spread of Islam they
would lose the guardianship of the Kabba and all the respect associated to it so
they grew hostile to Islam and the Holy Prophet.
