What is dance?
● A form of expression of
oneself through rhythmic
movement.
Folk Dance
● The oldest form of dance and the
earliest forms of communication
● The traditional dance of a given
country which evolved naturally and
spontaneously with everyday
activities.
● Celebrates the cultural roots of a
particular group of people. Folk
dance is typically performed as a
form of ritualistic entertainment at
social gatherings.

Cordillera Dances
• Dances reflects rituals which celebrate
their daily lives- a good harvest, health,
peace, war, and other symbols of living
• A people whose way of life existed long
before any Spaniard or other foreigners
stepped foot on the Philippines
• Abra, Bontoc, Mountain Province, Ifugao,
Benguet, Apayao, & Kalinga tribes
• Gongs, Ganza
• Banga, Bendayan, Manmanok,
Ragragsakan, Salisid, Talip, Uyaoy
Muslim Dances
• Influenced by Malay, Javanese, & Middle
Eastern Traders (Islam)
• Mysticism, royalty, and beauty
• Uses intricate hand and arm movements
• The fingers express feelings and
emotions
• Uses shimmering costumes
• Singkil, the Pangalay, Asik or Mag-Asik,
the Kandingan, and the
Kapamalongmalong.
Spanish Influenced Dances
• Philippine aristrocats created Filipino
adaptions of European dances
• Dance by young socialites to the stringed
music of the rondalla
• The gentlemen compete among each other
to win the heart of the dalaga, or young
lady, by exemplifying chivalry, grace, and
confidence.

Tribal Dances
• Also known as Ethnic dances found in different
parts of the Philippines (Bilaan, Mayobo,
Bagobo, Bukidnon etc)
• Reflects rituals and animals, belief in “spirits” &
shamans, nature- “anito”
• Animal sounds, human singing, indigenous
materials.
• Intricate craftmanship in metal, jewelry and
clothing.
• Malakas at Maganda, Kadal Blelah, Kadal
Tahaw, Binaylan, Bagobo Rice Cycle, and
Dugso
Rural Dances
• Reflects the simple life of the people in the barrio
• Depicts common work, daily activities of the
peasants
• Shows gaiety and laughter, festivities
• Performs in fiestas to honor patron saints
• Give homage to the barrio’s namesake for a good
harvest, health and perseverance.
• Indigenous materials, clapping, rondalla,
percussion instruments.
• Bakya-Salakot, Labahan at Palo-Palo, Sayaw sa
Bangko, Kalapati, Bulaklakan, Kalatong,
Maglalatik, Pandanggo sa ilaw,Kuratsa, Subli,
Tinikling
Philippine Folk Dance Terms
• Cabeceras- is when a square formation, the couples (dancers) occupy the width
of the hall.
• Costados- is when a square formation, the couples (dancers) occupy the length.
• Kumintang, is moving the hand clockwise or counterclockwise with wrist action.
• Hayon- hayon- is placing one forearm in front while the other at the back of the
waist.
• Jaleo- is using any dance step, partners turn around clockwise or
counterclockwise with elbows touching each other.
• Salok- is to bend the trunk forward, simultaneously swinging the arm downward-
upward passing in front of the body like in a scooping motion.
• Saludo- is done with the feet together when partners bow to each other, to the
audience, or to the opposite dance.
