A very good morning to the honorable judges, teachers and my

fellow friends. My name is Priyanila Sashi Kumar and I am

standing here to deliver a speech entitle “LOVE FOR STEM’’.

Do you remember a favorite Science teacher or Science

class you had in high school or college? I have fond memories of

different teachers who taught Science in a fun, witty, and engaging

manner.

Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are

crucial fields in education and employment. STEM for kids helps

them understand the world around them and prepares them for

future advancements, and many students end up taking careers in

STEM to develop these advancements.

First, STEM encourages creativity. Since Science is an

ongoing thought process, it encourages students to ask questions,

test, and try new things. Science also helps students see how

experiments can fail or succeed—leading to learning about trial

and error. Students learn that if something doesn’t work the first

time, they can try it again. Giving them room to try new ideas and

fail fosters creativity, inquiry, problem-solving, and

resourcefulness.
STEM can foster a love for learning. One of the most critical

things we can do in education is to exemplify our own love of

learning. Through this topic, the love of learning should come

natural because it is a subject that leaves room to question and

test everything.

STEM enhancing language learning: When you teach STEM

to young kids, you can help expand their vocabulary. Learning new

subjects and materials can teach them new words, allowing them

to become more familiar with STEM terms. Understanding these

terms earlier can help them better understand math and science

later when concepts become more advanced. Further, STEM is

naturally communicative, allowing kids to learn how to speak and

articulate ideas.

STEM can connect them with the world: STEM activities and

lessons incorporate real-world applications and examples that can

help students better understand the STEM concepts and how the

world around them works.

STEM can foster Creativity. Thinking out of the box” is also a

key skill that can be learned via STEM learning. STEM students try

to come up with unique creative ideas while solving complex

problems with an interdisciplinary approach. They develop this skill

with inspiration from their teammates. Thus, it encourages kids to

explore new things, use their imagination and build their invention.

There is no best age for STEM we would say, but with the

current educational trend, the earlier we start, the better,

kindergarten or even toddler age are now the right ages to start.

It is because the various benefits STEM education has for all of

us. Thank you for lending me your ears.
