Section 1: Basis and background of entity selection

- Initially selected entity: Simbisa Brands


Reasons for changing: No direct and prominent competitor to perform finding
comparisons.
- Selection 2: Econet Wireless Zimbabwe
Reasons for changing: Direct competitor identified as Netone, however financial and
all other relevant reports and information is not publicly available
- Selection 3: Apple Incorporation
Reasons for changing: Direct competitor identified as Samsung, however difference
in accounting standards (American Entities use GAAP) may lead to inaccurate
comparisons
- Final Selection: MTN South Africa
Entity Background: MTN Group Limited is a South African multinational corporation
and mobile telecommunications provider. Its head office is in Johannesburg. As of
December 2022 MTN recorded 289.1 million subscribers. MTN is among the largest
mobile network operators in the world, and the largest in Africa.
Competitor Background: Vodacom Group Limited is a South African mobile
communications company, providing voice, messaging, data and converged services
to over 130 million customers across Africa.

- South African Telecommunication industry is very competitive and well covered in the
media
- Information is widely and publicly available
- MTN belongs to a trade association (SATA)
- Listed on the JSE (Both MTN and Vodacom)
- IFRS standards are applied
- MTN is not a conglomerate, main focus of operations is telecommunications
- Financial reports for the past 3 years available
- Wide analyst coverage e.g. Banks
