LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 6 (Quarter 1)

Learning Competency: Describe techniques in separating mixtures such as decantation,

evaporation, filtering, sieving and using magnet

Subtask: Describe decantation and scooping as techniques in separating mixtures

Preliminaries:
Subject ID in Science
Checking of Attendance
Giving of House Rules

Learning Episode 1:
A. 1. Motivation:
Today you are going to describe decantation and scooping as techniques in
separating mixtures.
2. Importance
It is important to learn decantation and scooping as a technique in separating
mixtures because it can be used to separate mixture of solid and liquid or immiscible
liquids that have different densities. When the components are separated, each
component can become beneficial and useful to our everyday living. For example,
when you accidentally mixed oil and water you can use decantation in separating the
mixture especially nowadays that buying oil is expensive.

3. Formative Assessment:
At the end of the lesson, each of you is expected to describe decantation and
scooping as techniques in separating mixtures
Direction: Study the following pictures. Describe the following techniques
(DECANTATION or SCOOPING) in separating mixtures using the guided questions.

a. What kind of mixture is gas and water?

b. What happened to the gaswhen it was mixed with the
water?
c. What substance in the mixture is denser?
d. How do you separate gas from the water?
e. What technique is used in separating the gas from the
water?
Rubrics:
10----------able to describe decantation/scooping as a technique in separating mixtures using the
guide questions
9----------- able to describe decantation/scooping as a technique in separating mixtures using the
guide questions but with minor errors

guide questions but with major errors
7-----------cannot describe decantation and scooping

a. How will you separate the foam from the soup?

b. What technique is used in separating the mixture?

B. Pre-requisite Skills:
Teacher says:
Let us read a short story. (Let the children read the story).

One early morning, James saw his Nanay Janine busy in the kitchen. When he
approached his mother, he saw her washing the rice. “Nay, why did you wash the rice twice?”,
asked James. “James I washed it twice to remove the impurities of the rice and to make it clean and
safe before cooking,” Nanay Janine answered.

Comprehension Check-up: (Literacy)

1. Who was busy in the kitchen?
2. Where did the story happen?
3. Why did James’ mother wash the rice twice?
4. Have you tried cooking rice by yourself? How do you do it?

Teacher says:
Now, let us connect it to our lesson today. When Nanay Janine removed/separate the
impurities in the rice, she is doing another technique in separating mixture and it is called
Decantation.

What is Decantation?
Decantation is a technique used in separating less dense substance from a dense one. In the process
of decantation, the mixture is left undisturbed until it settles at the bottom or float. It can be
removed by slowly pouring out the less dense substance.

Some of the mixtures that can be separated by decantation are the following:

Oil in water

mud and water

Rinsing rice before cooking

Other examples of mixtures that uses decantation in separating mixtures:

*gasoline in water

Aside from decantation, scooping is another technique in separating mixtures.

What is Scooping?
Scooping is a separation technique where a solid component is removed from a mixture
using a spoon or a scoop.
Examples of mixtures that can be separated using scooping:
*Removing foam from soup
*Sinigang with floating fats

Health Integration: Why should we remove fats in our soup?

It is because it will make our soup to have a better taste and remove some
extra calories.
*

Learning Episode 2:
A. Modeling: (I Do)
Teacher says: (Note: Teacher will use Venn Diagram while describing Decantation and Scooping).
Class, I will describe decantation and scooping as a technique in separating mixtures
by doing the following activities. Observe carefully on how I will describe decantation and
scooping. Based from the short story read, I will use the mixture of rice and water as an example.

First, let us prepare the materials needed.

 a beaker with water

 rice
 empty beaker
Next, I will put three tablespoon of rice in the beaker with water. Then, I will mix it.
(Teacher will observe what happens and let the mixture sit for a few
minutes.).
After mixing, I will let the mixture left undisturbed for a few minutes until such time
the rice will eventually settle at the bottom. When this happens, the container is tipped
slowly on its side and let the water flow out from the container until all is left is the rice at
the bottom. And this technique is called decantation.
(Teacher will describe what happen to the mixture through decantation using the
guided questions.)
Guided Questions:
1. What kind of mixture is rice and water?
Answer: It is a suspension.
2. What happened to the rice when it was mixed with the water in the beaker?
Answer: The rice settles at the bottom of the water.
3. What substance in the mixture is denser?
Answer: The denser substance is the rice .That is why the rice settled at the
bottom of the water.
4. How do you separate rice from the water?
Answer: Slowly pour out the mixture into another glass. Thus, the rice was separated
from the water.
5. What technique is used in separating the water from the sand?
Answer. It is called Decantation.
Integration: EPP
What would you do to the rinsed from cleaning the rice? Why?
*Do not throw the water from rinsing rice because the water can be used as fertilizer of
flowering plants.

Integration: Numeracy
It can also save us money. Why? A kilo of fertilizer nowadays cost 50 pesos. So if you will
buy 3 kilos of fertilizers, how much will you spend for fertilizers? (Teacher will show the
multiplication process on the board)
To proceed, I will show another technique in separating mixture. This is the scooping.
The materials needed are the following:
 lemon
 a cup with water
 an empty cup

Now, I will squeeze the lemon into the cup with water. Notice that there are seeds in the
mixture. For me to able to remove the seeds I will use scooping technique. This is to avoid
choking. (Teacher will scoop the seeds using a spoon.)

I will now describe scooping as a technique in separating mixture by answering the Guided
Questions.
1. What kind of mixture is the lemonade with seeds on it.
Answer: Heterogeneous Mixture
2. What happened to the seeds of the lemon when it was mixed with the water in the beaker?
Answer: The lemon seeds float in the water.
3. What substance in the mixture is denser?
Answer: The denser substance are the seeds. That is why the seeds settled at the
bottom of the water.
4. How do you separate lemon seeds from the water?
Answer: Slowly scoop the seeds using spoon. Thus, the lemon seeds was separated
from the water.
5. What technique is used in separating the lemon seeds from the lemonade?
Answer. It is called Scooping.

We Do:
Together let us perform decantation in separating this mixture and describe what happens to
it.
(Teacher together with the learners performs decantation and describes the technique.)
 Get your plastic cup with water.
 Put three tablespoon of oil in the water.
 Observe what will happen.
 Separate the mixture through decantation.
Guide Questions:
1. What kind of mixture is oil and water?
2. What happened to the cooking oil when it was mixed with the water?
3. What substance in the mixture is less dense?
4. How do you separate cooking oil from the water?
5. What technique is used in separating the cooking oil and water?
*Why is decantation used in separating this mixture?

(Teacher will show a short video about removing fats from a soup).
Guide Questions:
1. How do the fats is removed from the soup?
2. What technique is used in separating the fats from the soup?
*Why is scooping used in separating this mixture?
