UNDERSTANDING EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Definition: An exponential function with base is a function of the form ( ) or
, where . This means that the base should be greater than and
should not be equal to .
Example: The given table below shows how to evaluate exponential functions. Just
remember in our previous lesson on evaluating functions that we simply substitute
the given value of and simplify. The -values are .

MODELING EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Many applications involve exponential functions. The most common applications of
exponential functions in real-life are exponential growth and exponential decay.
Below are some of the applications for exponential growth and exponential decay.
Exponential Growth Applications
1. Number of internet hosts
2. Compound interest for finance such as savings account/ fund deposit and
account balance
3. Population growth
4. Natural gas consumption
5. Average number of computer chips
6. Amount of energy
7. Government debt
8. Coin collection or antiques collection and a lot more

Exponential Decay Applications

1. Radioactive decay
2. Depreciation value of assets or things such as cars, computers, and stereo
systems
3. Beverages like the amount of caffeine in your system
4. Medicine like the amount of ibuprofen in the person’s system
5. Number of record albums sold each year and a lot more

Let us now learn how modeling exponential functions is done. It is just simply
representing the situation with an exponential function.

7
A. Modeling Exponential Growth

When a real-life quantity increases by a fixed percent each year (or other time
period), the amount of the quantity after years can be modeled by this equation,
( )

In this model, is the initial amount and is the percent increase expressed as a
decimal. The quantity is called the growth factor.

Example 1: Internet Host. A network host is a computer or other device connected

to a computer network. It may work as a server offering information resources,
services, and applications to users or other hosts on the network. In , there
were about internet hosts in the Philippines. During the next five years, the
number of hosts increased by about per year.
(a) Write a model giving the number (in millions) of hosts in years after .
(b) About how many hosts were there in ?
(c) Construct a table of values and graph the model.

Solution:
(a) The initial amount is (in millions) and the percent increase is
(in decimal). So, the exponential growth model is:
( ) Write exponential growth model.
( ) Substitute for and
( ) Simplify.

So, the exponential model for this is ( ).

(b) Using the exponential model above, you can estimate the number of hosts in
. Since it started in , the time is . From to , the time
is .
( ) Write exponential model.
( ) Substitute for .
Simplify.

The estimated number of internet hosts in is millions or

Example 2: Compound Interest. Compound

interest is interest paid on the initial investment,
called the principal, and on previously earned
interest. (Interest paid only on the principal is
called simple interest.). You deposit in an
account that pays annual interest.
(a) Write a model giving the amount (in
Pesos) in the account after years.
(b) Find the balance after year.
(c) Construct a table of values and graph the
model.
Solution:
(a) The initial amount is and the percent increase is (in
decimal). So, the exponential growth model is:
( ) Write exponential growth model.
( ) Substitute for and
( ) Simplify.

So, the exponential model for this is ( ).

(b) Using the exponential model above and with interest compounded annually,
the balance at the end of year is:
( ) Write exponential model.
( ) Substitute for .
Simplify.

The balance after year is .

Example 3: Population Growth.

The population (in millions) in the Philippines
in year 2019 can be modeled by
( ) ( ) where represents
the time in years.

(a) What is the estimated population in year

2015 using the model?
(b) Construct a table of values and graph
the model.

Solution:
(a) Since the model is for year where , then if we go back to year ,
the time ( ) will be . (Note: There is no negative time. The negative symbol
merely pertains to the past years before year ).

( ) ( ) Write exponential model.

( ) ( ) Substitute for .
( ) Simplify.

The population in the Philippines in year is approximately (in

millions) or using the given exponential model.

10
B. Modeling Exponential Decay

When a real-life quantity decreases by a fixed percent each year (or other time
period), the amount of the quantity after years can be modeled by the equation,
( )

In this model, is the initial amount and s the percent decrease expressed as a
decimal. The quantity is called the decay factor.

Example 1: Depreciation. Reduction in the value of an asset with the passage of

time, due in particular to wear and tear refers to depreciation. You buy a new car for
. The value of the car decreases by each year.

(a) Write an exponential decay model for the value of the car.
(b) Use the model to estimate the value after years.
(c) Graph the model and show some function values.

Solution:
(a) The initial value is (in pesos) and the percent decrease is
(in decimal). Let be the number of years since you bought the car.
So, the exponential decay model is:
( ) Write exponential decay model.
( ) Substitute for and .
( ) Simplify.

So, the exponential model for this is ( ).

(b) When , the value is:

Example 2: Beverages. You drink a beverage with milligrams of caffeine. Each
hour , the amount of caffeine in your system decreases by about .

(a) Write an exponential decay model for the amount of caffeine (in milligrams) in
your system.
(b) Use the model to estimate the amount of caffeine (in milligrams) after hours.
(c) Graph the model and show some function values.

Solution:
(a) The initial amount is (in milligrams) and the percent decrease is
(in decimal). Let be the number of hours. The exponential decay
model is:
( ) Write exponential decay model.
( ) Substitute for and .
( ) Simplify.

So, the exponential model for this is ( ) .

(b) When , the value is:

C. The Number

The history of mathematics is marked by the discovery

of special numbers such as counting numbers, zero,
negative numbers, π, and imaginary numbers. In this
lesson you will study one of the most famous numbers
of modern times. Like and the number is denoted
by a letter. The number is called the natural base or
the Euler number after its discoverer, Leonhard Euler
(1707–1783). This irrational number has an
approximate value of . (You may see this
number in scientific calculators or even in some
calculators installed in mobile phones).
LEONHARD EULER continued his mathematical
research despite losing sight in one eye in 1735. He
published more than 500 books and papers during
his lifetime. Euler’s use of 𝑒 appeared in his book
Mechanica, published in 1736.

Example: Endangered Species.

A wide variety of the planet's animal
species call the Philippines home.
Conservation International, a nonprofit
environmentalist group founded in
1987, recognizes the Philippines as
one of only 17 mega-diverse countries
in the world. The International Union
for the Conservation of Nature and
Natural Resources (IUCN) has
declared a number of animal species in
the Philippines to be threatened in
2017. The number of endangered Philippine Eagle

SOLVING EXPONENTIAL INEQUALITIES

Properties of Exponential Inequalities
(a) If , then the exponential function is increasing for all . This
means that if and only if .

15
(b) If , then the exponential function is decreasing for all . This
means that if and only if .

In other words, if the base is greater than , the graph is increasing. In solving
exponential inequalities, just retain the direction of the inequality symbol. If the
base is between and , the graph is decreasing. In solving exponential
inequalities, change the direction of the inequality symbol.

Example 1: Solve the inequality .

Solution:
Write original equation.
( ) Rewrite with base .
( )
Apply Power Law on the second exponential expression.
Distribute to .

Since the base , then this inequality is equivalent to

Equate exponents. (The direction of the inequality is retained).
Add both sides by or by transposition.
Subtract both sides by or by transposition.
Simplify.

Thus, the solution set is ( ) or . This means that the solutions for this
exponential inequality are those real numbers greater than .

Example 2: Solve the inequality ( ) ( ) .

Solution:
( ) ( ) Write original equation.

( ) ( ) Rewrite with base .

( )
( ) ( ) Apply Power Law on the second exponential expression.

( ) ( ) Simplify exponents.

Since the base , then this inequality is equivalent to

Equate exponents. (The direction of the inequality is reversed).
Subtract both sides by or by transposition.
Combine similar terms.
Divide both sides by 5.

The solution set is [ ) or . This means that the solutions for this exponential
inequality are those real numbers equal to and above.
