Introduction
Academy Awards, or Academy Awards of Merit, also famously known as the Oscars, are a
number of awards for artistic and technical achievements in the movie industry that are presented
annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, California. It is
thought to be the most prestigious film award in the world.

It was first set up in 1927 with only 36 members, but many years later it has become an
institution with over 6000 people, that are responsible for voting the winner in each category.

The Oscars got their name after the golden statue, which is given out to the winners and
after they automatically become an official Academy member. Nobody really knows why’s the
statue called Oscar, but there are assumptions that it is because one of the Academy members
thought the statue looked a little bit like her Uncle Oscar, and it stuck. The award was originally
sculpted by George Stanley, the famous American sculptor, and the design of it was sketched by
Cedric Gibbons, the Irish- American art director and designer.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences first presented the Oscars in 1929, and almost
a century later, it’s still being presented every year.

There are currently 23 categories for Oscar nominations:

Best Picture, which is considered to be the most important one, Best Director, Best Actor,
Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Animated Feature Film, Best
Animated Short Film, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Documentary Feature,
Best Documentary Short Subject, Best Film Editing, Best International Feature Film, Best Live
Action Short Film, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best
Production Design, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original
Screenplay.

1. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and

Sciences
AMPAS, professional organisation for those interested in the production of motion pictures
in the United States, has pushed for technological advances in the film industry, among other things
ever since its earliest days as a non- profit organisation. It was founded in 1927 and is the worlds
preeminent movie- related institution, comprising more than 9,000 accomplished individuals
working in cinema.

The membership is by invitation only, and it’s based on special achievements in one of the
branches of film production recognized by the academy. That includes actors, writers, producers,
directors, art directors, cinematographers, sound technicians, musicians, film editors, executives,
makers of short film and animated features, visual- effects artist, and public relations experts. New
membership proposals are considered annually in the spring, and it does not expire, even if a
member struggles later in his or her career.

Not only does the Academy holds Oscar awards, but also has a number of awards like:
Governors Awards, Scientific and Technical Awards, Student Academy Awards, awards up to five
Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting. Moreover, the academy is also known for operating the
Margaret Herrick Library, in Beverly Hills, and the Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study, in
Hollywood.

The Academy has numerous and diverse facilities in Los Angeles, headquarters in Beverly
Hills, central Hollywood, and La Cienega Boulevard, that are responsible for different operations.

It was first created in 1927, by 36 film industry leaders after Louis Mayer, the head of a very
powerful studio, actor Conrad Nagel, director Fred Niblo, and producer Fred Beetson had the idea
for a new industry organisation for handling labour disputes, promoting different branches of film,
improving the industry image, and providing a common ground for the discussion of newly
production procedures and technologies.

2. The first Academy Awards

The first ceremony made the Los Angeles Times’ front page under the headline ’’Film-
Merit Trophies Awarded’’. Official first Academy Award formalities took place two years after the
academic organisation was assembled, on 16th May 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
Presentation ceremony was hosted by Douglas Fairbanks, first president of the Academy, and it
lasted only 15 minutes. Only fifteen statuettes were awarded, honoring artists, directors, and other
participants in the filmmaking industry for their works during the 1927- 28 period.

For the first time ever, Academy Award for Best Picture was given to a silent war film set
during World War I, named ’’Wings’’. The films romantic atmosphere, war picture and masses of
extras and actors, won this movie the honor of being called the first to win the huge Oscar award.
At the time, it was the most expensive movie making ever, with it costing over $2 million dollars.

Additionally, the first award for Best Actor was granted to Emil Jannings, for his leading
roles in silent films ’’The Way of All Flesh’’, and ’’The Last Command’’. Janet Gaynor won the
award for Best Actress for films ,,Seventh Heaven’’, ’’Street Angel’’, and ,,Sunrise’’.

2.1. Changes throughout Oscars

By the time the second award show came on 3rd April 1930, there have already been made
lots of changes to the ceremony and to the program.

With this ceremony conventionally began radio coverage, with the local broadcast by KNX,
a radio station in Los Angeles. Most importantly, it was the first presentation in which winners
weren’t announced in advice, unlike the first ceremony where winners were known three months
before the award show. Additionally, the number of awards categories was reduced from twelve to
seven, and the two major film awards were collapsed into one, called best picture.

Because the 2nd ceremony was held more than eight months after the end of the eligibility
period, it was decided that the 3rd Academy Awards would be held in November 1930, so the
ceremony could be closer to the relevant time period. As a result, 1930 was the only calendar year
in which two Academy shows were hosted.

So many changes have been made since the first ceremony. Currently, there are 93 Award
Shows that are presented annually. The only thing that’s been consistent is Academy’s desire to
remain flexible and to keep the evolution of the film industry.

Among the most significant changes are:

 In 1953, Academy Awards made their first television debut on NBC.

 Winners have been granted a limit of 45 seconds for their speech.

 The event became more and more formal, with the change of fashion. Also, red
carpet interviews have become a crucial part of the event.

 Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck has catered the Governor’s Ball after party for over 20
years now, and currently it’s consisted with a very long, elaborately themed, and
gourmet menu. Unlike at the first Oscars, where guests were served with simple
things, like string beans and broiled chicken.

 Since the first ceremony, that only had about 270 people, attendance has grown
immensely in size and now the seats are taken by over 3,000 people.

 For many years Academy allowed only five films in the best picture category, and
now the show has expanded it to ten movies, so that more movies could score the big
nomination.

2.2. Rules for the nominations

Official Academy Awards rules state that a film must open in the previous calendar year,
from midnight at the start of January 1st to midnight at the end of December 31st, in Los Angeles
County, California, and play for seven consecutive days, to qualify. Additionally, the movie must
be shown at least three times on each day of its qualifying run, with at least one of the daily
showing starting between 6 pm and 10 pm local time. An exception to this rule include foreign-
language movies, which are submitted by their country of origin.

Documentaries and short films have different eligibility requirements and are officially
submitted by their producers, whereas music awards require the music artist to file a submission
form.

The rules also declare that a film must be feature- length, defined as a minimum of 40
minutes, except for short subject awards, and it must exist on a specific film print or frame.

Only the members of Academy may nominate and vote for candidates for the Oscars. There
are various branches of film production, and the nominees in each award category are chosen by the
members of the right branch; that means writers nominate writers, directors nominate directors, and
so on. The entire membership nominates the candidates for best picture and votes to determine the
winners in many of the categories.

3. Famous nominated winners for Best

Picture
Since the beginning of the Oscars, there has been an incredible range of movies nominated
for all sorts of awards. One of the most prestigious award is for Best Picture, since its debut in 1929.
Best Picture is usually the final award of the night, and it’s the only category in which every
member of the Academy is eligible to submit a nomination and vote on the final ballot. The award
had multiple names, like the Academy Award for Outstanding Picture, Academy Award for
Outstanding Production, Academy Award for Outstanding Motion Picture, Academy Award for
Best Motion Picture, but ever since 1962 it is best known as Best Picture.

Across the board, there have been exactly 579 films nominated for Best Picture and 93
winners. Since 93 films are a lot of movies to present, I decided to pick a few that had the biggest
impact on cinematographic history, the ones that gained the biggest popularity among people all
around the world, and of course some of my personal favorites.

3.1. All Quiet on the Western Front

’’All Quiet on the Western Front’’ is an American anti- war movie based on the 1929 novel
of the same name. Directed by Lewis Milestone, and produced by Carl Jr; this movie talks about a
group of boys going into the army and fighting the war. It’s filled with realistic and horrifying
events of war, awful food situations, and heartbreaking deaths.

This movie was the first sound war film to

win Oscars 1930, and it was the first ever to win
Academy Awards for both Best Picture and Best
Director. The movie is ranked one of the best epic
films, and it was selected by the United States
Library of Congress’ National Film Registry as
being cultural, historical and significant. It is also
one of only 12 films that have won Best Picture
without receiving a single acting nomination.

3.2. It Happened One Night

’’It Happened One Night’’ is an American rom- com directed and co- produced by Frank
Capra and Harry Cohn. The plot of the movie is about a spoiled heiress Ellie Andrews, who marries
the King Westley, buy then gets taken away by her father on his yacht. After jumping ship, Ellie
falls in love with cynical newspaper reporter Peter, who offers to reunite her with her new husband
in exchange for an exclusive story, but after their adventure together, they both catch some romantic
feelings for each other.

This movie is considered one of the

greatest films ever made, and is the first of
only three movies (besides ’’The Silence of
the Lambs’’ and ’’One Flew Over the
Cuckoo’s Nest’’) to win all of five major
Academy Awards in 1934, that include: Best
Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best
Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Also, it is saved in United States

National Film Registry for being deemed
important, cultural and historic.

3.3. Casablanca
Casablanca is a 1942 romantic drama film directed by Michael Curtiz, and produced by Hal
Wallis based off of unproduced play ’’Everybody comes to Rick’s’’. The main cast of the movie
includes Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid. It became one of the most beloved
movies because it has everything: the backdrop of war, the biggest movie stars in the world, a
doomed love story, many shady characters, and of course Rick and Ilsa at the centar. Critics praised
this movie, even though when it was first in the making, nobody thought it would be so popular.

Movies reputation has grown immensely since winning the Academy Award for Best
Picture, and even the film’s clever lines and the theme song are still iconic to this day.

3.4. Ben Hur

Director William Wyler is responsible for
this religious epic film from 1959. It’s a remake
from the silent film with a similar title, and it was
adapted from a novel ’’Ben Hur: A Tale of the
Christ’’. The movie’s plot consists of Judah Ben
Hur, a prince who is falsely accused of treason by
his adopted brother, returns to his homeland after
years to seek revenge, but finds redemption.

The budget of the movie was the largest

ever then, and that also included the largest set
build for a film production. After its premiere, it
became the second highest- grossing film in history
Picture number 3: ’’Ben Hur’’
at the time, right after ’’Gone with the Wind’’.The
movie won eleven Academy Awards and set up a
new record.

3.5. The Godfather

There isn’t a person in this world that hasn’t at least heard of this masterpiece of a movie.
This film, directed by Francis For Coppola is an American crime classic, and it’s the first
installment in The Godfather trilogy. It talks about an organized crime dynasty’s patriarch
transferring control of his empire to his reluctant son.

At the 45th Academy Awards in 1972, film won for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best
Adapted Screenplay. Likewise, this movie’s remembered by Marlon Brandos controversy, when he
sends a young Native American woman to refuse his Oscar for the Best Actor that left people in
awe.

Sequel ’’The Godfather II’’ has

also won the award for Best Picture two
years later, and it’s only one of two
movie sequels that have won Best
Picture.

3.6. Rocky
’’Rocky’’ is a 1976 American sports drama film directed by John Avildsen, written by and
starring Sylvester Stallone. The film tells the rags to riches story of Rocky Balboa, and uneducated,
kind, working class boxer, working as a debt collector for a loan shark in the slums of Philadelphia.
The famous scene of Rocky running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art has become a
cultural icon, with the steps acquiring the vernacular title of ’’Rocky Steps’’.

The film made on a budget of just over

$1.1 million dollar and it went on to receive
ten Oscar Awards nominations, winning three:
Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film
Editing.

The film has late spawned eight

sequels: Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky
V, Rocky Balboa, Creed, Creed II, and Creed
III. Sylvester Stallone portrays Rocky in all
eight films.

3.7. The Silence of the Lambs

Director Jonathan Demme made an American psychological horror, adapting it from
Thomas Harris’ novel. The film stars Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling, a young FBI trainee who is
hunting a serial killer who skins his female victims. To catch him, she seeks the advice of the
imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a cannibalistic serial killer.

With its first release in 1991, the film grossed $272.7 million worldwide on only a $19
million budget. It became the third film to win Academy Awards in all top five categories and is
also the only Best Picture horror winner. The movie gave a new perspective on serial killers,
showing their intellectual and brilliant side, with Hannibal Lecter being one of cinema’s greatest
dark masterminds.

3.8. Titanic
Titanic is a 1997 American epic romance and
disaster story, director, written, co- produced, and co-
edited by James Cameron. The movie is based on
accounts of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, and it stars
Leonardo DiCaprio, and Kate Winslet as members of
different social classes who experience forbidden love
during the ship’s dark fate.

James’s inspiration for ’’Titanic’’ came from his

fascination with shipwrecks, and he felt like a love story
filled with loss could benefit the impact of the disaster. Picture number 7: ’’Titanic’’

The production budget was $200 million, the most

expensive at the time.

The night of the Oscars was ’’Titanic’s’’ night, because epic drama won Best Picture and 10
other Awards, tying it to ’’Ben Hur’’. Titanic was also the first film to reach the billion- dollar mark
and it remained the highest grossing film of all time until Cameron’s Avatar surpassed it.

Even with the duration of 3 hours, this movie never seizes to excite people and make them
cry over and over again because of the heartbreaking ending. It’s very rare that a movie can have
that big of an impact on people all around the world.

12

Also, the soundtrack has one of the greatest movie songs ’’My Heart Will Go On’’ by
Celine Dion that is known everywhere.

3.9. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

’’The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’’ is an epic fantasy adventure film based on
the third volume of J. R. R. Tolkien’s ’’The Lord of the Rings’’. Directed by Peter Jackson, and
produced by Barrie Osborne, Jackson and Walsh, it continues the plot of the second movie.

Plot of it includes Frodo, Sam and Gollum making their final way to Mount Doom in
Mordor in order to destroy the One Ring, unaware of Gollum’s true intentions, while Gandalf,
Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and the rest of the group join forces against Sauron and his legions.

The film was highly praised by both critics and audiences, claiming it as a landmark in
filmmaking and the fantasy film genre. It grossed $1.1 billion worldwide and is regarded as one of
the greatest and most influential films ever made.

It received a number of Awards at the 76th Oscar ceremony, including Best Picture and all
eleven awards for which it was nominated. This remains the most Academy Awards won by a
single film, and is the current record for the highest clean sweep at the Oscars.

3.10. Moonlight
’’Moonlight’’ is a movie about a young African- American man who is grappling with his
identity and sexuality, while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and
burgeoning adulthood. It’s a 2016 coming of age drama film, written and directed by Barry Jenkins.
The base of it is Tarell McCraney’s unpublished play ’’In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue’’.

This film is considered one of the best of the 21st century, and it won the Academy Award
for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 89th Oscars.
Moonlight also became the first LGBTQ film, the first film with an all- black cast and the second
lowest grossing film to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

The supporting actor Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim to win an acting Oscar.

Picture number 6: ’’Moonlight’’

3.11. Parasite
’’Parasite’’ is a marvelously entertaining movie in terms of narrative, but there’s also so
much going on underneath about how the rich use the poor to survive in many unbelievable ways.
Directed by Bong Joon- ho, it’s a 2019 South Korean black comedy thriller film about the Kim
family, who are living in a semi- small basement and are struggling to live a normal life. But after
Ki- woo poses as a Yonsei University student and gets a tutoring job for the Parks family, things
quickly turn interesting.

The cast is made of Song Kang- ho, Lee Sun- kyun, Cho Yeo- jeong, Choi Woo- shik, Park
So- dam, Jang Hye- jin and Lee Jung- eun.

16
Nikola Počuča, Oscar Nominated Movies

The movie was first premiered in South Korea on 30

May 2019 and it’s considered by many critics to be the best
films of the 21st century.

Among its numerous honours, ’’Parasite’’ won a

leading four awards at the 92nd Academy Awards: Best
Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best
International Feature Film. It became the first non- English
language to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

At first, this movie seems kinda basic, but the more you
watch it and get into it, there’s more plot twists, and
remarkable, iconic scenes that take your breath away. I would
personally definitely suggest this movie to anyone who hasn’t
seen it. Picture number 8: ’’Parasite’’

3.12. Nomadland
And finally, ’’Nomadland’’ is a 2020
American drama movie based on the 2017 non-
fiction book ’’Nomadland: Surviving America in
the Twenty- First Century’’ by Jessica Bruder.

Chloe Zhao is the movie’s writer, editor,

producer and director, and it stars Frances
McDormand as a vandwelling working nomad who
leaves her hometown after her husband dies and
the sole industry closes down, to be ’’houseless’’
and travel around the United States.

’’Nomadland’’ premiered on September 11,

2020 at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the
Golden Lion. It’s praised for its direction, Picture number 9: ’’Nomadland’’

screenplay, editing, cinematography, and

performances, and at the 93rd Academy Awards, it
won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress,
from a total of six nominations.

17
Nikola Počuča, Oscar Nominated Movies

The movie, on the other hand, was faced with a lot of controversy, because it wasn’t as
popular as some of other movies released this year. Moreover, all of the nominees for the Best
Picture award seemed disappointing and shocking for our community. But, even with that, it’s still a
good movie to enjoy for a movie night.

4. Nominations for Best Picture

As I already said, there has been exactly 579 movies, to this date, nominated for the Best
Picture award. Because of how big this number is, we should assume that not all of the winners are
exactly considered a righteous, deserving champions of the main Academy Award.

Most of the movies that deserved the win got it, but there are several cases throughout the
years where the critics and the public got truly shocked by the Academy’s choice for a winner.

4.1. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

1966 American black comedy-drama film, directed by Mike Nichols, is considered one of
the greats of that time. The movie is adapted from the 1962 play of the same name, and it
showcases a late night gathering at the home of George, a college history professor, and his wife
Martha, who welcome guests Nicki, the new biology professor at the school, and his wife Honey to
their home.

Stars of the movie are Elizabeth Taylor,

Richard Burton, George Segal, and Sandy Dennis.

The film is one of only two features in

history to be nominated in every single eligible
category at the Academa Awards. All four main
actors were nominated in their respective acting
category, the first time a features entire credited cast
was nominated.

Apart from losing the Best Picture award, the

Picture number 10: ’’Who’s Afraid of Virginia
movie won five Oscars, and will always be Woolf’’
remembered as one of the best movies of the time.

18
Nikola Počuča, Oscar Nominated Movies

4.2. E.T. the Extra Terrestrial

E.T. is a 1982 science fiction film written by Melissa
Mathison, and produced and directed by Steven Spielberg.
The movie is about a troubled child trying to summon the
courage to help a friendly alien escape Earth and return to
his home world. This concept Spielberg based on his
imaginary friend he created when his parents were going
through a divorce.

Unlike many feature films, it was shot in rough

chronological order, to express convincing and powerful
emotional performances from the young cast.

It held for eleven years a record for the highest grossing

Picture number 11: ’’E.T.’’
film of all time, and critics praised it worldwide as one of
the greatest films to ever exist.

At the 55th Oscars ceremony, it won four awards, but unfortunately didn’t earn the Best Picture
name. That privilege was given to the movie ’’Gandhi’’, while overlooking the science fiction
project in top category.

4.3. Brokeback Mountain

The movie revolves around two shepherds, Ennis and Jack, who develop a strong sexual and
emotional relationship. Their connection becomes complicated when both of them get married to
their so called girlfriends. The film wisely never steps back to look at the larger picture, or deliver
the ’’message’’. It is specifically the story of these guys, and their love that stays in the closeup.

First released in 2005, this American Neo-Western romantic drama film was adapted from
the 1997 short story of the same name. Directed by Ang Lee, this masterpiece got universal
acclaim, for direction, screenplay and the incredible performances by main cast Jake Gyllenhaal,
Heath Ledger, and Anne Hathaway.

At the 78th Academy Awards, ’’Brokeback Mountain’’ won three awards for Best Director,
Best Adapted Screenplay, and Original Score, but controversially lost the Best Picture award to
’’Crash’’, which critics didn’t take very fondly. ’’Crash’’ is even considered the worst Best Picture
winner of the 21st century.

19
Nikola Počuča, Oscar Nominated Movies

Also, the sexuality of the main actors got a lot of discussion, and this movie is regarded as a
turning point for the advancement of ’’new queer cinema’’. It talks about real life issues and
accepting yourself, giving anybody who see it something to think about.

4.4. Get Out

’’Get Out’’ is an American horror movie written and directed by Jordan Peele. It’s about a
black man who stumbles into a very white, disturbing, weird world after visiting his girlfriend’s
parents for the weekend.

Incredible cast includes Daniel Kaluuya, and

Allison Williams, who gave a stunning performance
throughout the course of the movie. It was chosen by
the National Board of Review, the American Film
Institute, and Time magazine as one of the top ten
films of the year.

The movie got praised for the entire direction,

screenplay, acting performances of the cast, the use of
dark comedy, and clever, social themes. It only took
23 days to shoot the entire film, which is an amazing
accomplishment for a whole production industry.

At the 90th Oscar Awards, ’’Get Out’’ won

the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, but
sadly only got nominated for Best Picture and Best
Actor. There were a handful of worthy contenders in Picture number 12: ’’Get Out’’

2018, from ’’Shape of Water’’, to ’’Call Me By Your

Name’’ and ’’Lady Bird’’, but none reached the level
of Peele’s horror breakthrough.

What’s interesting about this movie, is that it shows how racist behavior trying to be
aggressively unscary is just as terrifying at making us feel that horror. Every second of the movie
carefully shows details and mind tricks that a person needs twice to think about. I think everybody
can agree that this film is a masterpiece itself, and it deserved every right to be named Best Picture.

20
Nikola Počuča, Oscar Nominated Movies

4.5. Lady Bird

In ’’Lady Bird’’, writer and director Greta Gerwig tells a coming of age story for a young
woman in Sacramento, set between 2002 and 2003, with general aspects of her life. Gerwig herself,
like the movie’s protagonist Christine ’’Lady Bird’’, grew up in Sacramento, attended a Catholic
high school, and went to New York for college.

Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts,

and Timothee Chalamet represent the main cast of
this incredible masterpiece. Many critics claim that
’’Lady Bird’’ is the best movie of 2017 and it even
got five nominations at the 90th Academy Awards.

In the movie, there are meditations on

parenting, on struggling with money, and it shows
that the future is never quite what we want it to be. It
sustains a kind of grace, depth and faith, that with
every repeated watching, the movie reveals more
and more layers and emotions.

Gerwig proved that small could be equally

powerful as something big, and that shows with the
film’s ratings being the highest of the bunch.
Unfortunately, the Academy committee didn’t see
Picture number 13: ’’Lady Bird’’
the beauty and grace that this movie holds with a
very powerful message, and it didn’t get the Best
Picture award, but it’s reputation says enough about
how worthy this feature really is.

21

4.6. Roma
Alfonso Cuaron is responsible for writing, directing, producing, and co-editing this amazing
2018 drama film, that talks about a year in the life of a middle class family’s housekeeper in
Mexico City in the early 1970s. Stars of the movie are Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira.

The movie received a great number of

accolades, with ten nominations at the 91st
Academy Awards ceremony. It became the first
Mexican entry to win Best Foreign Language
Film, and also won Best Cinematography and
Best Director. It tied with ’’Crouching Tiger,
Hidden Dragon’’ for the most Academy Award
nominations ever received by a non-English
language movie.

Cuaron, who shot the film in beautiful

black and white himself, adopts a fascinating
visual style where he rarely uses close ups,
keeping us at a distance from the movie’s main
protagonist Cleo, and his other characters. There
Picture number 14: ’’Roma’’ is no score, yet ’’Roma’’ feels aurally alive,
largely because of Alfonso’s attention to detail.

For many critics the 2019 Academy Awards ended at rock bottom when ’’Green Book’’ was
named Best Picture, and not ’’Roma’’. A year before ’’Parasite’’ made history, ’’Roma’’ definitely
deserved to become the first foreign language movie to win top awards at the Oscars. Cuaron’s
masterpiece was named one of the best movies of the decade, after showing that the act of
remembering can be as painful as it is revelatory.

Conclusion
At the end of the day, Oscars are famously considered one of the greatest, if not the greatest, award shows
in the entire world. It brings people together, and gives everyone’s favorite movies appreciation that they
deserve. There are too many good movies in this world, and even though I could have only named few in
this thesis, some of the best films that everyone should watch out for are just around the corner, and are
only beginning to be made.

For me, film industry represents a big part of our life, where a person can escape the world’s madness and
get lost in a two hour movie full of excitement and thrill, being that a romantic, action or a horror genre.
There is just something so sacred about enjoying your favorite movies with friends or family, and even
though some people think movies are a waste of time, I can strongly disagree with their opinion, and go
binge some relaxing movie classics, not thinking about their absurd belief.
