Job search and tool kit strategies

In today’s seminar the presenter was Stephanie Power, she is the Co-Op Education
Coordinator that is the part of CCPD department of StFX. She talked about Job Search
and the Tool kit Strategies needed for job search. In this seminar she covered about Job
Search Strategies, tips for cover letters, and tips for resume. The seminar started with the
job search strategies, there were several strategies that were discussed by her. Majorly
there are three sections this was divided into first know the process, second was know
yourself, and third was about knowing the job market. She further told about each of the
sections in more details.

This starts with the knowing ourselves, we need to identify the goals in the sense what
type of role we are interested in, we need to know our field of interest and most
importantly the skills that we have or need to develop for the above both tasks. After
knowing the first step we need to evaluate our qualification whether we are fit for the role
and the job. We are moving to the second main step that was know the job market, in this
first point that she discussed was that we need to conduct the initial scan of the current
labour market. After this we need to customise our cover letters and resumes according
to the job role and the job requirements for which we are applying to. We need to identify
and execute the job search strategies. We are in the last phase that is the know the
process, here we need to customise our job search using more in-person methods. Lastly
need to evaluate the progress and make the adjustments accordingly.

Later, going with the seminar we got to know where a person with CSCI degree can work
into. This paragraph list all the roles that we a CSCI degree holder can apply to. The fields
are Architecture and Construction, Arts & Culture, Business & Finance,
Telecommunication, Education & Social Services, Fashion & Design, Law & Government,
Medical & Health, Natural resources & Transportation, Science & Engineering, and Sports
& Recreation. Each of this fields have multiple companies or organisations. All the
companies or organisations have variety of jobs.

There are two ways to find a job first is passive way and another is the active way to find a
job. In passive job search the jobs are pasted on the company websites or on the job
posting websites like indeed, glass-door, talent, etc…. Whereas for the active job search
people do the research on the company or job roles, then they connect to some members
of that particular company and this they do by networking or else cold calling to those
members.
Moving forward she mention about the companies and organisations that are in Canada.
There are very less big tech companies in Canada whose head offices are located in
Canada itself. Here in Canada those companies have smaller offices which means that
the variety of job that we will be doing in those offices may not be as many as that are in
the head offices. We should be aware of what phase the company is in whether it is hiring
new candidates or is in the hiring freeze phase. As it is general that all these companies
and organisations will all have different hiring processes, timings when the jobs are being
advertised, how the job seekers can apply for that roles or jobs, and will have different
interview processes too. It is needed from us that we need to be aware and need to be
familiar with the job search processes. There are three categories in Canada in which the
companies may fall, those are small businesses, medium sized businesses, and large
businesses. The percentage split between each of them are as follows small businesses
here in Canada consists of 97.8 percent, whereas medium sized businesses are 1.9
percentage only. On the worst part the large businesses are just 0.3 percentage. For small
to medium-sized businesses the recruitment campaigns may not be that big as the big
businesses. Canada have many tech companies that falls under the category of small
and medium sized.

She also gave the tips on how to apply for the jobs that has been advertised on the
websites. First of all, we need to read the job advertisement properly and figure out that
whether we have the required skill set, abilities, and knowledge for doing that role. Then
we need to prepare our specific cover letter and resume for which job we will be applying
to. After that we will keep a copy of the job advertisements, as this job advertisements
will be useful for our interview preparations. Later on, we need to follow the particular
employers “How to Apply” instructions. Moving forward the Canadian employers will
either not accept the application or will process our application late. The employers may
take from a week to months time for reviewing our job applications. We need to consider
that not everyone applying for the job will get a call from an interviewer. Most of the
employers will only contact those job seekers whose interview they want to conduct.

The educational coordinator then showed the graphs showing a typical way employers
prefer to fill the vacancy. First, they aim to fill the position from within, so always check
whether the employer hires you as a contract worker, or a temporary worker. Always aim
for the full-time position. Secondly, they aim to hire a unknown job hunter who brings the
proof of skills. Thirdly they prefer the referrals form the company employees, so get the
referrals from your friends. Fourth way is that through the agency that they trust. Fifth is
using the advertisement that they have used for a job opening. Lastly, they will fill the
vacancy using the resume, even if the resume was unsolicited.

Finally in the end she mentioned about the five job search strategies, that are first you
need to stop applying for jobs and instead of that you need to start targeting those jobs.
Then you need to include small and medium sized companies as well in our job search.
Third point was related to spending our eighty percent of time offline and the rest twenty
percent of the time online. Fourth point was that we need to customise our resumes and
cover letters according to each of the job role that we are applying to. Lastly, she
mentioned that we should master LinkedIn and social media presence for the job search.
This ends the seminar.
