1 Purpose
1.2 This is achieved by comparing the temperature value displayed on the preset
controller with a reference thermometer placed in a test thermowell (TW) and
performing adjustment in Preset Controller, if required.
2 Scope
2.2 This Best Practice is not applicable for temperature input received on 4–20 mA
or having multipoint offset adjustment facility.
3 Disclaimer
This Best Practice is intended to provide guidelines and is not authoritative by nature or
replacement of any mandatory Saudi Aramco Engineering Requirements or General
Instructions. This document governed by the following standard SAEP-203.
4.1 In the event of a conflict between this Best Practice and other Mandatory Saudi
Aramco Engineering Requirement (MSAER) or General Instructions, the
requirement stated in MSAER or GI shall prevail.

7.2 Pre-requisites
7.2.1 Obtain work permit and take all necessary safety precautions per plant
operation requirements.
7.2.2 Record brief description of the test in the Metering Log Book.
7.2.3 Verify that the certificates for the test equipment are valid. Check that
the test equipment serial numbers and certification dates are accurately
recorded on the test sheet and correspond with the test equipment used.
7.2.4 Ensure the instrument tag and serial numbers are recorded on the test sheet.
7.2.5 Ensure that this test is undertaken with fluid flowing across the thermo-
wells and process is stabilized.
7.4 Procedure:
7.4.1 Fill the test TW, adjacent to the temperature element (RTD), with the
thermal conductive oil. Insert the reference thermometer in the test TW and
allow the reference thermometer to stabilize for approximately 15 minutes.
7.4.5 If the signal wiring is good and the difference is still beyond acceptable
tolerance, disconnect the RTD signal wire to the preset controller at the
7.4.7 If the difference is within the acceptable limit (per IEC 60751), the
existing RTD is acceptable. Connect the RTD with Preset Controller and
proceed to step 7.4.9.
7.4.8 If the difference is beyond the acceptable limit (per IEC 60751), replace
the faulty RTD. Verify the accuracy of replaced RTD per step 7.4.6
before connecting it to preset controller. Perform temperature spot check
per steps 7.4.2 and 7.4.3. If spot check verification result is not with
acceptable tolerance, proceed to step 7.4.9.

7.4.11 Fill the test sheet with required test results. The sample test sheet
provided as Appendix A.
