1 Purpose

1.1 The purpose of this document is to provide a guideline to check functionality

and accuracy of RTD input loop in Preset Controller.

1.2 This is achieved by comparing the temperature value displayed on the preset
controller with a reference thermometer placed in a test thermowell (TW) and
performing adjustment in Preset Controller, if required.

2 Scope

2.1 This Best Practice is applicable to Preset Controllers per specification

34-SAMSS-847 and having single point offset adjustment facility for
temperature input received from RTD.

2.2 This Best Practice is not applicable for temperature input received on 4–20 mA
or having multipoint offset adjustment facility.

3 Disclaimer

This Best Practice is intended to provide guidelines and is not authoritative by nature or
replacement of any mandatory Saudi Aramco Engineering Requirements or General
Instructions. This document governed by the following standard SAEP-203.

4 Conflicts with Mandatory Standards

4.1 In the event of a conflict between this Best Practice and other Mandatory Saudi
Aramco Engineering Requirement (MSAER) or General Instructions, the
requirement stated in MSAER or GI shall prevail.

4.2 Chairman of Custody Measurement Standards Committee may be approached

for interpretation or to resolve any conflicts between this Best Practice and other
mandatory Saudi Aramco Engineering Requirements or General Instructions.

6.2 Definitions

Custody Transfer Measurement: A specialized form of measurement that

provides quantity and quality information used for the physical and fiscal
documentation of a change in ownership and/or responsibility of hydrocarbon
commodities. This includes measurement of hydrocarbon liquid movements
(deliveries or receipts) between Saudi Aramco and its customers, suppliers, joint
ventures and transport contractors.

7 Instructions

7.1 Frequency

Every Month (or as Specified in GI-0405.001).

7.2 Pre-requisites

7.2.1 Obtain work permit and take all necessary safety precautions per plant
operation requirements.

7.2.2 Record brief description of the test in the Metering Log Book.

7.2.3 Verify that the certificates for the test equipment are valid. Check that
the test equipment serial numbers and certification dates are accurately
recorded on the test sheet and correspond with the test equipment used.

7.2.4 Ensure the instrument tag and serial numbers are recorded on the test sheet.

7.2.5 Ensure that this test is undertaken with fluid flowing across the thermo-
wells and process is stabilized.

7.3 Calibration Equipment

7.3.1 RTD temperature v/s resistance relationship chart (IEC 60751).

7.3.2 Digital Multi-meter / Multi-function calibrator.

7.3.3. Reference Thermometer (ASTM certified glass stem thermometer OR

other type acceptable per GI-0405.001).

7.3.4 Thermal Conductive Oil.

7.4 Procedure:

Procedure as provided below should be followed. The graphical representation

of the procedure is provided as flow chart in Appendix B.

7.4.1 Fill the test TW, adjacent to the temperature element (RTD), with the
thermal conductive oil. Insert the reference thermometer in the test TW and
allow the reference thermometer to stabilize for approximately 15 minutes.

7.4.2 Simultaneously read the temperature indicated in the reference

thermometer and that is shown in the Preset Controller.

7.4.3 If both readings are within the required tolerance as specified in

GI-0405.001 (typically ±0.1°C, ±0.2°F) test result is acceptable and test
is complete. Fill the test sheet with required test results. The sample test
sheet provided as Appendix A.

7.4.4 If the difference of both readings is beyond acceptable tolerance, verify

and ensure that all wire termination points between RTD head to preset
controller, e.g., RTD head, junction box, preset controller input
terminals, etc. are free from rust, corrosion and are secured properly.

7.4.5 If the signal wiring is good and the difference is still beyond acceptable
tolerance, disconnect the RTD signal wire to the preset controller at the

RTD head or at the input of preset controller. RTD is not required to be

removed from the TW.

7.4.6 Measure the resistance generated by RTD using digital multi-meter.

Covert the value of resistance to °C per IEC 60751 for the given type of
RTD.

Use interpolation method to derive value of temperature. e.g., for the

measured resistance of 116.86 Ohm, the value of temperature shall be
43.4°C.

Compare the temperature measured by RTD (after converting resistance

to Temperature in °C) with that is measured by reference thermometer.
Comment:

Per IEC 60751, the acceptable tolerance is as follows for 0 – 150°C

temperature range.

Tolerance Class Tolerance Value ºC

AA ± (0.1 + 0.0017 | t | )
A ± (0.15 + 0.002 | t | )
B ± (0.3 + 0.005 | t | )
C ± (0.6 + 0.01 | t | )

Where | t | is modulus of temperature in ºC.

7.4.7 If the difference is within the acceptable limit (per IEC 60751), the
existing RTD is acceptable. Connect the RTD with Preset Controller and
proceed to step 7.4.9.

7.4.8 If the difference is beyond the acceptable limit (per IEC 60751), replace
the faulty RTD. Verify the accuracy of replaced RTD per step 7.4.6
before connecting it to preset controller. Perform temperature spot check
per steps 7.4.2 and 7.4.3. If spot check verification result is not with
acceptable tolerance, proceed to step 7.4.9.

7.4.9 Perform offset adjustment in Preset Controller per Preset manufacturer

recommended procedure.
Comment:

Recommended procedure for offset adjustment may be formally obtained

from the Preset Controller manufacturer or alternatively applicable
manual from the manufacturer’s official website may be used.

7.4.10 Verify that difference between temperatures indicated in the reference

thermometer and that is shown in the Preset Controller is within
acceptance tolerance (typically ±0.1°C, ±0.2°F) after offset adjustment.
If not, repeat the step 7.4.9.

7.4.11 Fill the test sheet with required test results. The sample test sheet
provided as Appendix A.
