ACTIVITY 1 Mila Explains Ceramics

Ceramics are objects made of different types of clay and

baked in a hot oven called the kiln to make them stronger.
Depending on the glaze, ceramics may sometimes be baked
again in the kiln. After baking, the glaze hardens and
strengthens the clay surface. It seals the surface and makes
the object waterproof. Ceramics are strong and rarely get
damaged by heat, water, air or chemicals. However, they do
break easily.

Glaze (verb) - To make something shiny by putting a liquid on

it and leaving it or heating it until it dries.

Did you know that in the world of visual arts, the words ‘ceramics’
and ‘pottery’ can mean the same thing? They are mostly the same.
They are both made up of different types of clay, baked in a hot oven
and later decorated. The difference is that ceramics are made just to
look pretty, like figurines, sculptures and tiles, while most pottery is
made to be used, like a bowl for eating. However, some ceramics can
be both beautiful and useful.

Clay is one of the most widely used materials for making ceramics.
Clay acts differently depending on what you add to it and how much
you add, like sand or talc. Damp clay objects are dried before firing in
the kiln. Then, based on the clay being used, ceramics are fired in
electric or fuel-fired kilns at the right temperature. The cone system
is used to figure out how much heat is needed to work with different
kinds of clay and glazes.

Later, the ceramics are decorated using different techniques. Here

are a few of them: After the clay object has been fired, an overglaze
(over the glazed ceramic) painting is done. Underglaze painting is
done on a clay object that doesn’t have a glaze or has a glaze that
hasn’t been fired yet. In tin glazed pottery, maiolica, the clay object is
dipped in a liquid glaze and painted by hand after the first firing, and
then it is fired again to create translucent colours.

Today, scientists and engineers use a wide range of materials to

make ceramics. These new ceramics can be used in many ways, such
as fixing teeth, watches, space shuttles and aeroplanes. Surprising,
right? This tells us how far we have come from the first ceramic
sculpture that was found in Czechoslovakia that dates back to
24,000 years ago. Ceramics as an art has evolved and has been
integral to humankind’s progress.
