Metal forming Techniques

Metal converted to finished product of desired shape and size through different
manufacturing process (plastic deformation of the material by bending, stretching and
drawing) using tools such as die, punch etc

Classification:
A) Bulk Forming
B) Sheet Metal Forming

A) Bulk Forming
✓ Operation carried out on piece having low surface area to volume ratio.
✓ Mostly carried out in hot condition
✓ Operations: a) Rolling b) Forging c) Extrusion d) Drawing

Rolling is a metal forming process in which the thickness of the work is reduced by
compressive forces exerted by two rolls rotating in opposite direction.
Forging can be defined as a method of shaping heated metal by compression. Modern
forging uses machine driven impact hammers or presses which deform the work piece by
controlled pressure. The forging process is superior to casting as the parts formed by forging
have denser microstructures, more defined grain patterns, and less porosity, making such
parts much stronger than a casting. Forgings usually have great strength, as compared with
other methods of producing products.
Extrusion is the process that forces metal to flow through a shape-forming die. The metal
is plastically deformed under compression in the die cavity. Extrusion produces only
compressive and shear forces in the stock without any tensile force, which makes high
deformation possible without tearing the metal.
Drawing The process of increasing length and decreasing cross sectional area of the metal
is known as drawing.

B)
C) Sheet Metal Forming
Operation carried out on sheet or piece having high surface area to volume
ratio or on less thickness material.

✓ Forming Operations:
1: Bending:
In this operation; the material in the form of flat sheet or strip is uniformly strained around a
linear axis which lies in the neutral plane and perpendicular it’s the length wise direction of the
sheet or metal.
2: Drawing:
This is a process of forming a flat work piece into a hollow shape by means of a punch which
cause the blank into a die cavity.
3: Shearing:
Cutting of metal sheets by shearing action
✓ Cutting Operations:
1: Blanking:
Blanking is the operation of cutting a flat shape from sheet metal. The product punched out is
called the “blank” and the required product of the operation the hole and the metal left behind
is discarded as waste.
2: Punching or Piercing:
It is a cutting operation by which various shaped holes are made in sheet metal. Punching is
similar to blanking except that in punching, the hole is the desired product.
4: Perforating:
This is a process by which multiple holes are very small and close together are cut in a flat
sheet metal.
5: Trimming:
This operation consists of cutting unwanted excess of material from the periphery of a
previously formed component.
6: Shaving:
The edge of a blanked part are generally rough, uneven and un square. Accurate dimensions
of the part are obtained by removing a thin strip of metal along the edges.
