Have you ever felt like your gender limits you?

From birth, we are taught that our gender differences are caused by our biology. From an
article ‘Dude, You’re a Fag’: Adolescent Masculinity and the Fag Discourse’ it says, “we tend to
equate aggression with biological maleness and vulnerability with femaleness” but sometimes
these norms do not fit with everyone. Still, gender inequality is a prevalent issue in our society
nowadays. A stereotype that exists where men should be strong alpha male while women should
always be the weaker link.
In the society, gender roles play a prominent part. Our parents are the first and one of the
strongest influences on a person’s gender role. It also reflects with the different cultures, traditions,
prehistoric practices or sometimes the media that influences us. It affects especially women
because many women have struggled with the chance to have equal opportunities as men. As we’ve
grown up, we’ve been taught that there are certain things that are assigned to certain genders.
Traditionally in the Philippine Culture, the stereotypical woman can be described as a stay-
at-home mother. In family and labor life, the traditional roles of Filipino women are to work in
gardens, care for the house, care for the children because they are basically the pattern of conduct
for the entire family. While the stereotypical man can be described as the moneymaker who
provides for his family.
However, these gradually changes overtime. A report shows that the Philippines has closed
78% of its overall gender gap, garnering a score of 0.781 (down by 1.8 percentage points from
.799 in 2019). With this, it ranked 16th out of 153 countries with the narrowest gap between men
and women, dropping by 8 notches from its place last year.
Furthermore, in the modern Philippine society, changes and constitutions are and have been
made in order to shed a positive light in women’s gender role such as: granting rights to women
to be part of nation- building as well as being provided safe working conditions taking account of
maternal functions.
I believe all countries in the world are fighting for gender equality. Although gender trends
may not be the same today, there are still changes and developments taking place in a better
environment in the gender sector. The dignity of women in different societies must be maintained
at a high level and require the growth of gender equality. In the future, I believe that the Philippines
will continue to build a society and culture that will recognize the potential of both genders.
All in all, humanity needs men and women to continue. Thus, inequality will get us
nowhere. To conclude this gender inequality talk, we need to get rid of the old-age traditions and
mentality. We must teach everyone, especially the boys all about equality and respect. It requires
quite a lot of work, but it is possible. We can work together and achieve equal respect and
opportunities for all genders alike …
… so that we can live in a world where gender is not a limit.
