4 SECTION 6003

GUIDELINES FOR SEPARATING THE

SPEED AND RANGE TRANSMISSION

WARNING: The following should only be used as a guideline when

separating the speed and range transmissions. All necessary
! precautions should be taken to ensure the operation is carried out
in a safe and proper manner. Only suitable lifting and separating
equipment MUST be used.

To separate the speed and range transmission it will be necessary to follow the guidelines below.
1. Park the tractor on hard level ground, apply the parking brake, STOP the engine and remove the key. Put blocks
in front and behind the front wheels
2. Install suitable wedges between the front axle and the bolster (both sides).
3. Disconnect the battery (Negative Terminal first).
4. Remove the MFD shaft shield and remove the MFD shaft to front axle retaining bolts and remove the MFD
shaft.
NOTE: For 50km/h tractors remove the two roll pins from the MFD shaft to transmission MFD output
shaft coupling.
5. Raise the rear of the tractor using suitable lifting equipment, remove the rear wheels and support the rear axles
on suitable axle stands.
6. For tractors equipped with cab suspension, fully lower the cab, refer to Section 10011.
7. Remove the cab using suitable cab lifting equipment.
8. Drain the fuel tank into a suitable container (fuel tank capacity when full is 347 litres/91.7 U.S Gal).
9. Remove the trailer hitch assembly (if equipped).
10.Remove the three point hitch top and bottom linkages.
11. Drain the transmission oil into a suitable container with a capacity of at least 115 Litres (30.5 US. Gal). When the
oil has drained install and tighten all drain plugs.
12.Disconnect and cap all necessary tubes and hoses.
13.Put identification marks on electrical connectors and disconnect as necessary.
14.Attach suitable tractor splitting stands to the speed and range transmissions. Support the tractor on the splitting
stands and remove the axle stands from the rear axles.
IMPORTANT: When separating the transmission from the engine, suitable splitting equipment MUST
be used. It is recommended MC30009A (splitting Stand), MC30010 (Adapter Set) and MC30029
(Adapter Set) be used.

SECTION 6003 5

15.Remove the retaining bolts and remove the filter screen cover (1), filter screen (2), filter screen housing
retaining bolts (3) and filter screen housing (4) to gain access to the speed to range transmission lower
mounting bolts.

16.Remove the two internal speed to range transmission lower mounting bolts (7) and one left hand and one right
hand outer mounting bolt. Install two 16 mm alignment studs MC1995A into the outer mounting bolt locations.

MD06G051

17.Remove the remaining outer mounting bolts.

18.Install and evenly tighten two jacking bolts into the left and right hand jacking bolt locations. DO NOT USE
excessive force on the bolts, if the transmission fails to separate check all mounting bolts have been removed.
19.Carefully separate the speed and range transmission.
20.Clean the mounting faces of the transmission housings.

6 SECTION 6003

Speed/Range Transmission Connection.

NOTE: When connecting the speed and range transmissions note the following.
• Make sure the sealing rings and locating dowels are installed.
• Apply a continuous bead of Loctite 515 to the range transmission mounting face.
• Make sure the MFD clutch and the Forward/Reverse Shuttle shaft drive coupling are installed.
• For tractors equipped with creeper make sure the creeper collar is installed onto the Forward/Reverse
Shuttle shaft.
• Position the speed transmission onto the alignment studs until the transmissions are approximately 75
mm (3.0 inch) apart. Make sure the PTO drive shaft coupler/load sensing wheel is installed and aligned
with the speed transmission PTO drive shaft.
• Turn the MFD output shaft, shuttle shaft and PTO drive shaft coupler/load sensing wheel to align the drive
couplings and charge pump gerotor while connecting the transmissions.
• Tighten all nuts and bolts to the correct torque, refer to “SPECIAL TORQUES” on page 3.
• Install and lubricate new o-rings before connecting hoses and tube.
• Apply Loctite 515 to the area around the filter screen housing (4) outlet port (A). Install new o-rings (5)
and (6) to the filter screen (2) and cover (1), refer to Page 5.
• Install the MFD drive shaft and tighten MFD drive shaft to front axle the retaining bolts (with Loctite 275)
to the correct torque, refer to “SPECIAL TORQUES” on page 3.
• For 50km/h tractors install two new roll pins into the MFD shaft to transmission MFD output shaft
coupling.
• Fill the transmission to the correct level with clean McCormick HTX transmission oil.
• Adjust linkages and cables, refer to Section 9001.
• Remove the air from the braking system, refer to Section 9001.
• For cab suspension tractors, remove the air from the cab suspension cylinders and calibrate the cab
suspension, refer to Section 10011.
