Read the following passage and choose the letter A, B, or C to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.

1. You should keep in mind that your job will help determine your future friends and the place where
you will live, as well as your income. In other words, your career means more than just a certain kind
of work, it represents a way of life.
Another point to be aware of in choosing your career is the effect this decision has on your present life.
Some people think that students who have a career in mind do better work in school than those having
no plans for themselves after graduation, others disagree and claim that students are better off if they
keep an open mind and seek a broad base of knowledge before deciding on a career.
One serious problem faces you when you select a vocational goal: making the right choice for yourself.
You should think carefully and make a tentative choice at first. It may develop into a permanent goal or
it may not. But keep an open mind until you know more about the occupation. This will give you an
opportunity to seek general knowledge before you attempt to specialize. You will find a general
educational background to be useful and necessary in almost any job.
When you select an occupation, remember to select a job that you think you can do best, both for your
own satisfaction and the good of all: You should choose a vocation that will be a challenge to you and
yet one in which you can achieve
success through your abilities.

2. Different Colours can affect us in many different ways; that‟s according to Verity Allen. In her new
series „Colour me Healthy‟, Verity looks at the ways that colours can influence how hard we work
and the choices we make. They can even change our emotions and even influence how healthy we
are.
„Have you ever noticed how people always use the same colours for the same things?‟ says Verity.
„Our toothpaste is always white or blue or maybe red. It‟s never green. Why not? For some reason we
think that blue and white is clean, while we think of green products as being a bit disgusting. It‟s the

same for businesses. We respect a company which writes its name in blue or black, but we don‟t respect
one that uses pink or orange. People who design new products can use these ideas to influence what we
buy.‟
During this four-part series, Verity studies eight different colours, two colours in each programme.
She meets people who work in all aspects of the colour industry, from people who design food packets,
to people who name the colours of lipsticks. Some of the people she meets clearly have very little
scientific knowledge to support their ideas, such as the American „Colour Doctor‟ who believes that
serious diseases can be cured by the use of coloured lights. However, she also interviews real
scientists who are studying the effects of green and red lights on mice, with some surprising results.
Overall, it‟s an interesting show, and anyone who watches it will probably find out something new.
But because Verity is goes out of her way to be polite to everyone she meets on the series, it‟s up to the
viewers to make their own decisions
about how much they should believe.
What is the writer doing in this text?
A. giving information about how colours influence us
B. reporting what happens in a new television series
C. giving information about a television presenter

C. It can help you to sell products.
Who does the writer respect least?
A. Verity Allen
B. The people who name lipsticks
C.The „Colour Doctor‟
Which of the following would make a good title for the text?
A. Enjoy it, but don‟t believe everything.
B. Don‟t miss this if you work in Business!
C. Watch this programme! It will make you healthy!
Why does the author think our toothpaste is never green?

3. For many years people believed that the cleverest animals after man were chimpanzees. Now,
however, there is proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes.
Although a dolphin lives in the sea it is not a fish. It is a mammal. It is in many ways, therefore,
like a human being.
Dolphins have a simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible for
man to learn how to talk to dolphins. But this will not be easy because dolphins can not hear the kind
of sounds man can make. If man wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he will have to make a third
language which both he and the dolphins can understand.
Dolphins are also very friendly towards man. They often follow ships. There are many stories
of dolphins
guiding ships through difficult and dangerous waters.
Which animals do people think may be the cleverest?
A. Chimpanzees B. Dolphins C. Big apes
What other beings are dolphins like in many ways?
A. Fish B. Animals C. Men
What have scientists discovered about dolphins?
A. They understand simple language.
B. They can speak to one another.
C. Men can now talk to them.
Why is a third language necessary if man wants to talk to dolphins?
A. Most men do not speak English.
B. The dolphins language is hard to learn.
C. Dolphins cannot hear men speaking.

In what way are dolphins friendly to man?

A. They like interesting things about man.
B. They often follow ships.
C. They often jump on to ships.
4. Isn‟t it amazing how much time we spend talking about food? “Have you ever eaten......?” “What
did you have for lunch?” and so on. And yet when you travel from one
country to another, you find that people have quite different feelings about food. People often feel
that what they eat is normal, and that what other people eat is strange or silly.
In most part of Asia, for example, no meal is complete without rice. In England, people eat potatoes
every day. In the Middle East, bread is the main part of every meal. Eating, like so many things we do,
becomes a habit which is difficult to change. Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice and coffee.
The English drink tea four or five times every day. Australians drink a large amount of beer, and the
French drink wine every day.
The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to
be delicious in France. In Hong Kong, some people enjoy eating snakes. Newzelanders sheep meat,
but they never eat goat meat. The Japanese don‟t like eat sheep meat because of its smell, but they
enjoy raw fish.
So it seems that although eating is a topic that we can talk about for hours, there is little common sense
in what we say about it. People everywhere enjoy eating what they have
always been eating, and there is very little we can do to change our eating habits.

The text is mainly about .

A. people‟s attitude to food
B. the importance of meat
C. food and life
The writer think that .

5. The umbrella is a very ordinary object. It keeps the rain and the sun off people. Most umbrellas fold up, so it
is easy to carry them.
However, the umbrella did not begin life as an ordinary object. It was a sign of royalty or importance. Some
African tribes still use umbrellas in this way today. Someone carries an umbrella and walks behind the King or an
important person.
Umbrellas are very old. The Chinese had them in the eleventh century BC. From there they traveled to India
Persia, and Egypt. In Greece and Rome, men wouldn't use them. They believed umbrellas were only for women.
When the Spanish explorers went to Mexico, they saw the Aztec kings using umbrellas. English explorers saw
Native American princes carrying umbrellas on the east coast of North America. It seems that people in different
parts of the world invented umbrellas at different times.
England was probably the first country in Europe where ordinary people used umbrellas against the rain. England
has a rainy climate, and umbrellas are very useful there.

What is an umbrella used for today?

A. To keep the rain and sun off people.

Read the following passage and choose the correct word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered
blanks.

PARROTS
Perhaps you have seen these beautiful birds, with their lovely colours and long tails in the forest
or in the zoo. Parrots are (1)found in countries like Brazil, Australia and India. They usually live
in large groups and because they like to eat fruit, they are (2) sometimes a problem for farmers.
There are many different kinds of parrots, but they all have strong beaks and feet, which they use
(3)for climbing and holding food. The biggest bird can live for up to 80 years. They are (4)very
noisy, but they are clever birds and it is easy to teach them to talk. Some zoos have
parrot shows, where you can see the bird (5) do things they have learned.

OTTERS
Not many people have seen an otter. These animals live (1) near rivers and make their homes
from small pieces of wood. They usually came (2)out of their homes at night. Otters are very
good in the water and swim at more than 10 kilometres an hour. They have thick brown hair and
this (3)keep them warm in the water. An otter can close (4) its ears and nose. This
means otters can stay under water for several minutes. Twenty years ago, there were
(5)few otters in Great Britain. The water in the rivers was so dirty that many fish and insects died
and the otters couldn‟t find anything to eat. But today there is lots of food for them
because the rivers are clean again.

THE HISTORY OF HORSE RACING

From the first history books ever written, it is clear that horse racing has always been an important
sport. It started in Central Asia about 4,500 years (1)ago and was a favourite sport in both Greek and
Roman times.
Modern horse racing began when Arab horses were bought to Europe (2) in the 12th century. At first,
races were long and on just two horses, but at the beginning of the 18 th century this changed. Races
became (3) much shorter and had several horses running against each other. Today, horse racing (4)
is _ watched by more people than (5) any other sport in the USA, except baseball. It is also very
popular in
other parts of the world.

THE SKYWALK
The Grand Canyon in the United States was created by the River Colorado. People visit the
Grand Canyon Park to go walking and running but (1) mainly to look at the view. It is a
wonderful view made even better by the Skywalk. The distance (2) from the Skywalk to the
bottom of the Grand Canyon is 1219 metres. It is a platform which walls and floor are built of
glass (3) so that you can see the beautiful rocks of the canyon. Up to 120 people are allowed to
stand on it at the same (4) time _ It opened in 2007 and since there thousands of people have
used it. You have to wear special covers over your shoes to (5) avoid scratching the glass
beneath your feet. Walking onto the Skywalk makes you feel
like a bird floating high up in the air.

CHILDREN’S HEALTH
Children watch too much television, and they see ten food advertisements for every hour of TV
they watch. They do less (1) exercise , play less sport, and spend more time watching videos or
playing computer games than they did in the past. The problem isn‟t that children eat too much
food or the wrong kind (2) of food though of course it‟s better to eat healthy foods than too
much fat. The real problem is that too (3) many children don‟t get any physical exercise.
So how can we help our children develop a healthy attitude to food and exercise? Well, parents
should try to help children to eat healthily when they‟re still young. We need to give children
good habit at an early age. This means, for example, giving children fruit, not sweets, and eating
meals together as a family if possible. Cooking with children is also a good (4) idea , to teach
them the importance of good food.
And instead of (5) driving _ our children everywhere, we should encourage them to walk or
cycle. Playing football in the park is much better for children than playing on the computer.

POLLUTION
We are slowly (1)_ destroying the earth. The seas and rivers are too dirty to swim in. There
is so much smoke in the air that is unhealthy to live in many of the world‟s cities. In one well-
known city, for example, (2) poisonous _gases from cars pollute the air so much that traffic
policeman have to wear oxygen marks.
We have cut (3) down so many trees that are now vast areas of wasteland all over the
world. As a result, farmers in some parts of America can‟t grow enough to eat. In certain
countries in Asia, there is too little rice. (4) Moreover , we do not take enough care of the
countryside. Wild animals are quickly disappearing. For instance, tigers are rare in India now
because we have killed too many for them to survive. We must act now before it is too (5) late
to do anything.
Join us now. Save the earth. It is too important to ignore.
