What is literature?
Literature refers to creations that are
written or spoken to express ideas,

significant unit is the sentence, not
the line. Hence it is represented
without line breaks in writing.
Prose tells a story, idea, or
information in sentences and
paragraphs. Its language is
similar to how we communicate
in real life.

It can be classified into


fiction (imaginative) or
nonfiction (factual).
Narratives are stories with a
beginning, middle, and end.
It is an interesting account
of people’s ideas, feelings,
and values pertinent to the
development of their culture
and society.
Fiction literatures that created from

though it may be based on a true story
or situation.
Folktale - It is longer than the
legend and has magical and fairy-
like qualities. Folktales are
stories that grow out of the lives
and imaginations of the people, or
folk. They are a form of
traditional literature that began
as an attempt to explain and
understand the natural and
spiritual world. Each region in the
Philippines has its collection of
folktales.
Legend - This kind of narrative
is an account of unusual events
believed to have actually
happened in a particular place
and time, which explains the
origins of certain things,
objects, and places.
Short Story - It is a brief
narrative that can usually
be read in one sitting and
centers on a single
incident.

Fable is a literary genre
that is written in prose.
Commonly, the characters
are animals that inanimate
the human beings.
Myth is an ancient story
often meant to explain the
mysteries of life or
nature. Commonly the
characters are gods and
goddesses.
Novel is a long, written
narrative, normally in
prose, which describes
fictional characters and
events, usually in the
form of a sequential
story.
Parable is a literary
genre that is written in
prose and it illustrates a
universal truth. Most of
the stories show
instructive lessons or
principles.
Non-fiction literatures are based on
actual events and facts. It includes
accounts from real people and details
of real places.
History refers to the
story of the past as it is
described in written
documents. The events that
occurred are usually
recorded.
Diary is a record
(originally in handwritten
format) with discrete
entries arranged by date
reporting on what has
happened over the course
of a day or other period.
Journal is a record of significant
experiences. It is much more
personal than a diary. It contains
feelings, emotions, problems, and
self-assurances and can be used to
evaluate one's life. In a journal,
one does not just record one's
experiences but also thoughts,
feelings, and reflections.
Anecdote is based on or
consists of reports or
observations of usually
unscientific observers.
Biography is a usually
written history of a
person's life.
Autobiography is a
biography that is
written by the
person it is about.
