Introduction:
Swimming pool halls consume a significant amount of energy, often more per unit area than most other types of building. In order to reduce costs, swimming pool managers can choose to install
pool covers which minimise losses from the surface of the pool, saving energy in air-circulation systems, dehumidification and the heating of pool water. An insulated pool cover is often a cost
effective measure that can be undertaken to reduce the impact of the losses on the site consumption.

This Pool Heatloss Evaporation tool is intended for use by Salix clients that are looking to install an insulating pool cover. The tool offers advice and guidance on the basic calculations that can be
undertaken to estimate potential savings through installing a pool cover. The tool focusses on the primary loss from swimming pool surfaces - evaporation. While there will inherently be other
losses from the pool (e.g. conduction and radiation), these are often smaller by way of comparison and consequently often have a smaller impact on the overall potential for savings. Salix does
however, encourage clients to quantify other potential losses as part of their savings forecast if they wish to do so. The tool also does not quantify savings from reductions in AHU needs or
dehumidfication which clients may also wish to include in their business case.

Guide on using the Pool Heatloss - Evaporation Tool:

To use the Salix Pool Heat Loss - Evaporation Tool, you will need to have collated some input information, specific to the site/swimming pool in question. Primarily, the user will require:
• Swimming pool area (width and length)
• Water temperature and space air temperature (in °C) and the relative humidity
• Site energy consumption (kWh)
• Hours unoccupied and days closed per annum
• Heater efficiency

Once you have collated the information necessary to complete the tool, the information can be input into the respective cells. Cells that can be edited by the user are coloured white, while cells
that perform an automated calculation are shaded green and do not require a user input.

Salix Disclaimer:
It is clearly important that clients looking to follow the good practice guidance exercised in this tool read carefully and fully understand the calculation methodology behind the tool before
attempting use for project purposes.

It is also important for Salix to stress that this tool has been produced as a form of good practice guidance for clients on how to calculate savings from insulating swimming pools and that there are
other calculation methodologies that clients may wish to apply to their insulation projects (e.g. heatloss curves); Salix encourages clients to use a standard methodology that they feel most
comfortable with. Salix recommend that this tool be used in conjunction with a client’s own calculation methodologies as a form of comparison to give the client confidence in their savings
estimates.

It is appreciated that there are different sources of losses within a pool environments (e.g. convection) and while this tool focusses on one of the primary losses from a swimming pool, clients may
wish to quantify this as part of their own calculation methodologies.

Salix accepts no liability in how this document is used and the outputs from it.

If you have any questions on using this tool, we would always recommend contacting the Salix technical team via the ‘contact us’ box on the front page of the Salix website or alternatively
emailing: [email protected].

Detail on the Calculation Methodology:

The calculation for evaporation rates for body of water:

g = Θ A (xs - x)
Where:

g is the amount of evaporated water per hour (kg/h)

Θ is (25 + 19 v) = evaporation coefficient (kg/m²h)
v is air speed above the water surface (m/s)
A is the water surface area (m²)

xs is the humidity ratio in saturated air at the same temperature as the water surface (kg/kg) (kg H2O in kg dry air)
x is the humidity ratio in the air (kg/kg) (kg H2O in kg dry air)

The heat lost is then calculated through the following equation:

q = hwe g/3600

Where:
q is the heat lost (kJ/s, kW)
hwe is the evaporation heat of water (2270 kJ/kg)
