Evaluation Criteria:
Simulation Project - Students choose a reading topic on one of the applications of power converters
and/or voltage source converters in energy systems, and reproduce the results reported in this paper
by means of time-domain simulation. A report presenting the theoretical background, system model,
system parameters, control design steps, and simulation results along with a softcopy of developed
models should be submitted (by email) by December 2, 2024, 6:00 pm.
One page summary on proposed Simulation Project should be submitted by September 23, 2024,
6:00 pm for instructor’s approval.
Evaluation of Simulation Project is based on the quality of submitted reports, developed model, and
a 15-minute presentation (on Nov 25th or Dec 2nd) summarizing key findings in the project followed
by 5 minutes Q&A.
• Focus Areas: Converter topology selection, efficiency optimization, thermal analysis, and
control strategy development.
• Objective: Simulate and analyze the operation of a bidirectional DC/DC converter that
allows energy to flow both from the grid to the EV battery and from the EV battery back to the
grid.
• Focus Areas: System modeling, control strategy design, impact on grid stability, and
efficiency of energy transfer.
3. Multiport Converter Design for Integrating EV Charging Stations with Renewable Energy
Sources
• Objective: Design and simulate a multiport converter that can simultaneously connect an
EV charging station with solar panels and the grid.
• Focus Areas: Power flow management, control strategies, impact of fluctuating renewable
energy input on charging stability.
• Objective: Model and simulate a wireless power transfer system for EVs, focusing on
efficiency and alignment issues.
• Focus Areas: Coupling efficiency, impact of misalignment, control strategies for dynamic
charging, and safety considerations.
• Focus Areas: Power flow management, control strategies, economic analysis, and impact
on grid load.
• Focus Areas: Microgrid modeling, control strategies, power quality analysis, and integration
with the main grid.
• Focus Areas: Interleaving techniques, control strategies for current sharing, ripple
reduction, and thermal management.
• Focus Areas: Active and passive filtering methods, control strategies for harmonic
mitigation, and impact on overall system efficiency.
