Exam 2 Review

Math 148

The following is a list of suggested problems to practice for the exam. If any of these give you
difficulties, it is suggested that you find similar problems and work out several of them until you
feel confident about your ability to solve that particular type of problem.

Problems:

(1) Evaluate the integral.

to approximate the given integral. Round your answers to six decimal places.

(3) Estimate the errors involved in the previous problem in parts (a) and (b). How large should
n be in each case to guarantee an error of less than 0.00001?

(4) Determine whether the integral is convergent or divergent.

(5) A population of honeybees increased at a rate of r(t) bees per week, where the graph of r
is as shown in the figure below. Use Simpson’s Rule with six subintervals to estimate th
increase in the bee population during the first 24 weeks.

Concept Checklist:

Section 7.1:
• Memorized the formula to integrate by parts.
• Know how to integrate by parts

Section 7.2:
• Have memorized the Pythagorean identities involving sine and cosine and know how to figure
out the other two from that.
• Memorized the half angle identities for sine and cosine.
• Know how to integrate sine and cosine to an even (half angle identity) or odd power
(Pythagorean identity).
• Know how to integrate sine to a power times cosine to a different power (three separate
cases and strategies for doing this).
• Know how to integrate tangent to a power times secant to a different power if the power on
tangent is odd or when the power on secant is even.
• Know how to integrate tan θ, tan2 θ, tan3 θ and sec θ, sec2 θ, sec3 θ.

Section 7.3:
• Have memorized the Pythagorean identities involving sine and cosine and know how to figure
out the other two from that. √
• Know when to integrate using trigonometric substitution (get rid of radical in ±x2 ± a2 ,
(±x2 ± a2 )3/2 , etc.).
• Comfortable integrating with trigonometric substitution.

Section 7.4:
• Know how to perform partial fraction decomposition of a proper rational function.
• Know how to perform long division on an improper rational function and then decompose
the remainder term into partial fraction decomposition, if necessary.
• Know how to integrate resulting rational functions from partial fraction decomposition (ei-
ther natural log, arctan, or a substitution).

Section 7.5:
2
• Know the integration strategy discussed in class (all of the little tricks that can come in
handy: adding/subtracting terms, rationalizing, etc.).

Section 7.7:
• Know how to set up Midpoint, Trapezoid, or Simpson Rule approximation of a definite
integral.
• Know how to use the error estimate formulas to determine how large n needs to be chosen
for an estimate of the definite integral to be within a certain accuracy.

Section 7.8:
• Know how to integrate improper integrals of type 1 (over an infinite interval).
• Know how to integrate improper integrals of type 2 (with a discontinuity in the interval of
integration).
• Know what it means for an integral to be convergent and divergent.
• Know how to use to comparison test to determine if an integral is convergent or divergent.
