Learning Objectives:

• Define performance, procedure and steps;

What is performance?

An observable procedure, which requires knowledge,


skills and attitudes, of doing something to an acceptable
standard of performance, which leads to a product,
good or service.
The first term to understand from this definition is
procedure:

What is procedure?

A procedure is the series of steps, done in


proper sequence, which accomplishes a skill.

A step is the smallest identifiable part of a skill.

When to develop performance guide?

You should consider developing a performance guide


whenever:
• You want to be sure your students can use the tools or
equipment properly
• There are health or safety hazards involved in the
procedure
• Expensive materials could be wasted if the procedure
is done improperly

When to evaluate procedure?

• Procedure is more critical than product.


• There are health and safety hazards involved
in the procedure.
• Time to perform skill is important.

When to use PG?

We should use performance guide :


• During the demonstration instructors use PG as a
hands out.
• During the practice activities learners use PG as a
guide lines.
• During assessment to check the student
performance.

How to develop PG?

1. State the skill clearly.


2. State the condition of the test.
3. Develop a list of steps in performing the skill.
4. State each step as clearly as possible.
5. Indicate critical or safety steps.
6. Make the list of steps reasonable in length.

A checklist normally has a place to check YES and NO besides


each step.

Format the Performance Guide:

A performance guide contains places for the following


information:
• Name of the skill
• Learner's name
• Date of the test
• Name of evaluator
• Signature of evaluator

Check the YES or NO space to indicate whether the student
performed each step as indicated or not.

Minimum Acceptable Level of
Performance
Example:

• All steps must be checked YES or NA.

• If any item receives a NO,

• the student must review the learning material,

• practice the skill under supervision, and request another


performance test.

Conclusion

• One of the most important jobs of any vocational-


technical instructor is to
• make sure that students are using the correct
procedure in trying to do any skill--in particular those
skills
• which could involve injury to themselves or others.
• To ensure correct procedure we need PG.

• Gain the attention of the learners.

• Telling jokes, a short story, a poem, a personal
story, a news event, related to the topic.

• Gain the attention and the interest.

Points to be Remembered

• Prepare the introduction in detail.


• Write out the first few sentences word by word.
• Think about the learner’s needs and interests.
• Write questions that you will ask or may be asked.
