A career in geology - the earth science

Dying to understand how mountains form or volcanoes erupt ? Inquisitive about exactly why dinosaurs became extinct? Alarmed about global warming and yearn to preserve the Earth? Hanker to use the entire Earth as your personal laboratory to both reconstruct the past and anticipate the future ? Welcome to Geology the study of the origin, evolution, structure and behaviour of our planet. This branch of science deals with the composition of the Earth, that is, its materials, processes, systems, resources and physical forces and also how they change over time. This global view extends to organisms, natural resources and environment that make up the Earth as well as exploring other planets and our solar system. Nature of work: Geology is a broad and diverse field of applied science with a very global view. Geological scientists play a significant role in various spheres from measuring the physical properties of the Earth and understanding the history and modifications of our planet to studying, assessing and predicting natural/man-made disasters (volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, landslides, tsunamis) to studying past climates, current global warming and future climate change to discovering and exploring precious and valuable natural resources (oil, natural gas, fuels, metals, minerals, ground water). They are also at the forefront of resource mapping, remote sensing, recycling technology and computer simulations. Geologists use their specialised knowledge, skills, research and analysis in a variety of ways that directly affects the quality of human life like: Predicting Earth's systems and behaviour - natural processes like movements of continents, rise/fall in sea level, rock formations, glaciers, etc. Determining environmental impact, conserving the environment and sustaining healthy ecosystems Understanding global climate patterns and forecasting the weather Reducing human suffering and loss of property due to natural hazards Finding, maintaining and determining optimal utilisation of natural resources to prevent depletion Maintaining agricultural productivity Developing land usage plans by assessing suitable areas for construction of dams, bridges, tunnels, railway lines, roads and buildings and ensuring safe use of lands Rehabilitating contaminated lands and mine sites Determining safe disposal of hazardous wastes Reducing atmospheric and water pollution Eligibility: A science background is mandatory for pursuing geology. Various colleges offer different B.Sc. courses in Applied Geology and corresponding streams or you can choose geology as an honours subject in the final year. Many students opt for higher training with M.Sc. (Geology) course and specialise in one of the diverse geoscience disciplines like structural geology, mineralogy, petrology, hydrology, oceanography, volcanology, sedimentology, planetology, meteorology, geomorphology, atmospheric science, environmental science, soil science, geological engineering, etc. Top companies like Chevron and Total provide graduate training during select Masters programmes. For research or teaching domains, it is mandatory to follow up with M.Phil, or Ph.D. courses (after qualifying NET conducted by Council of Scientific & Industrial Research). Geology is a taxing field both physically and mentally what with the intensive field work ranging from top of mountains to deep ocean floors and deserts or mining locations in between. Geologists often witness natural catastrophes like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tidal waves first-hand! The remote, inhospitable locations with unpleasant weather can test the toughest of persons. A love for nature coupled with unbridled curiosity and perseverance is extremely vital. A strong sense of exploration and discovery will stand you in good stead when solving challenging problems. Based on preferences.and specific training, geologists divide their time between collecting samples/drilling on site, working in the lab with sophisticated instruments as they process/model geological data for integrating the results in maps, diagrams, reports or

Since then growth in the demand of PCBs has been very steady. Professional grade PCBsa term used to differentiate these items from the PCBs used by the entertainment sector like TVs, radios, wireless sets, and other low cost instrumentsare mainly used in microprocess or based systems, minicomputers, data acquisition systems, radars, space applications, medical electronics, control instrumentation and a host of other complex devices. Printed circuit boards are so widely used that now-a-days electronic assemblies without the use of PCB are very rare, even though PCBs were introduced only in 1966 for widespread use. Generally PCBs have large volume production capability with exact reduction of wiring time and elimination of miswiring. PCBs replace point to point wiring methoda forerunner to the PCB. They stimulate a good degree of mechanisation in component assembly in electronic circuit system and high volume production aided by automatic insertion equipment, while layout memorisation is also possible now. The production of printed circuit board is being done mainly in small scale sector. Share of small scale sector is around 90 per cent. There is a huge gap in demand and supply. So it has tremendous and bright future for new entreprenuers.

Printed Circuit Boards

Introduction: Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are widely used in both electrical and electronic equipment and appliances as they provide a base on which other components can be easily mounted. PCB circuits are quite reliable as there are few interconnecting wires and all the components are firmly mounted. It is possible to quickly design the PCB required for a circuit and then fabricate it. Testing and repairs are facilitated as all the points on the PCB are easily accessible. Printed Circuit Boards consists of an insulating substrate. Metal is deposited or clad upon that. The insulating materials usually used are fiberous sheet material like cellulose, paper, glass or nylon impregnated with a thermosetting resin binder and then consolidated under high temperature and pressure into solid sheets. The metal used is generally copper. They are used to transmit power from one end to another and so are used in all electronic equipment. However, design, size, weight of printed circuit board changes application to application. Printed circuit boards are normally classified in two groups (a) rigid, (b) flexible type. Flexible type of PCB are designed as per individual applications while rigid type of PCB are used in various applications. There are three types of rigid PCB- (1) Single sided printed circuit board (2) Double sided printed circuit board (3) Multi-layer printed circuit board. Its introduction years ago marked a significant step forward in the advancement of circuits, providing firm and reliable support for alljthe resistors, capacitors, inductors and thermionic values used, later to be followed by transistor and integrated circuits. The PCB also brought and built in automatic system of interconnection that was achieved without the traditional birds nest of wires, often too easily connected to wrong points in the circuits. The method of interconnection was extremely reliable and easy to follow when tracing a faulty component, and its fixed pattern meant that every circuit of the same type was interconnected in exactly the same way. Post-production faults caused by wrongly routed wires, for example were eliminated and the completed assembly was much lighter, more manageable and easier to assembly version of its hard wired counterpart. Uses and Applications: The Printed Circuit Boards are largely used by manufacturers of electronics component like T.V. Sets, Transistor sets, Radio, amplifiers, ampligrams, stereo amplifiers, voltage stabilizers, calculators, telecommunication equipment, power suppliers, public address equipments, computers and also by defence and other research establishments. np In the latest types of PCB, the component connecting leads, when present, are specially shaped usually like a small foot. So that they can be mounted on the same side as the copper tracks and are soldered directly to them. This avoids a lot of expensive drilling and through board track interconnection, but more important it allows the use of surface mounting devices (SMDs) which are usually much smaller and potentially cheaper than their traditional counterparts and allow much greater component packing density. The most popular components to appear is SMD form are capacitors and resistors. These are small rectangular shaped blocks whose ends are capped with metal to form an all round connection for each internal electrode. There are no connecting wires. When mounted on PCB their leaders components are lightly glad to the board to hold them in place, and their end caps straddle and sit on two separate conductor tracks. The end caps are then soldered to the tracks to form the connection. This method of mounting can be carried out manually, but is more usually carried out using semi- or fully automatic component insertion machines. Standards: The Indian standards relevant to PCBs are : 1. IS-8943-1943: Guide to the design and use of components intended for mounting of boards with printed wiring and printed circuit (Reaffirmed 1984). 2. IS-5921: Metal clad base material for printed circuits for use in electronic and telecommunication equipment. IS-5921 (Part I)-1983: General requirement and tests (first revision). IS-592I (Part Il)-1973: Paper phenolic copper-clad laminated sheet PF-CP-CU economic grade (with Amendments No. 1 and 2). IS-5921 (Part-IH)-1978: Phenolic cellulose paper copper clad laminated sheet PFCPCU (high electric grade). IS-5921 (Part IV)-1987: Phenolic cellulose paper copper clad laminated sheet of defined flammability (Vertical burning test). IS-5921 (Part V)-1987 Epoxide cellulose paper copper-clad laminated sheet of defined flammability (Vertical burning test). IS-5921 (Part VII)1987 Epoxide woven glass fabric copper clad laminated sheet of defined flammability (Vertical burning test). 3. IS-5921 (Part VI)-1978 Printed circuits (first revision) (Reaflirmed 1984). 4. IS-7405 Printed wiring boards. IS-7405 (Part I)-1983 General requirements and methods of test (first revision). IS-7405 (Part 2)1984: Single and double sided printed boards with plain holes. 5. IS-10424-1982: Guide for design and use of printed boards. 6. IS-12071-1987: Guide for assembly of printed boards. Process of Manufacture: As stated earlier, PCB is a board of insulating material which is given a coating of conducting material such as copper/gold. This conducting material is removed or etched away from certain places so as to form conducting and insulating paths as required. Holes are grilled through the board at desired points so that components may be mounted through them. As it is necessary to fabricate a wide variety of circuits, it becomes essential to have a technique by which the etching of the copper layer can be done both accurately and quickly. This is done by giving a coating of either silk screen ink, liquid photoresist or dry film photoresist over areas which are not to be etched. These areas will be required to form conducting paths in the final circuit. Next after suitable processing, the board is dipped into a tank containing a solution of ferric chloride or cupric chloride with sulphuric acid or hydrogen peroxide with sulphuric acid to etch those portions of the copper layer which are not covered by the protective materials mentioned above. The etching agent reacts with Uie copper and is removed to reveal the insulating material below. Hydrogen peroxide with sulphuric acid is not generally used as it is a rattier unstable solution and can be stored for short periods only witliout losing its etching power. For the manufacture of PCBs, photo resist is first applied to die surface of the PCB where die copper is to be etched. Then a photograph is taken of die drawing made on cellophane paper of die circuit widi tracks covered by tape. The negative of the photograph will have die areas covered widi track markings in tape which is a shade lighter dian die rest of die board. Now, ultraviolet light is exposed on the PCB dirough die negative of die photograph. The ultraviolet light only penetrates die negative where it has die lighter shade, causing die photoresist material on which it shines to harden. Thus die areas which is to be made into tracks or not to be etched is covered widi a hardened layer of photoresists. Next, the board is dipped in a chemical solution diat remove all die photoresist material which has not been hardened. This is the area to be etched. The board is now dipped into an etching solution which reacts with die exposed copper to remove it. Once die etching is complete, board is cleared so as to remove any photoresist material hardened over die copper traces of ferric chloride. Widi die negative of die circuit to be fabricated, it is possible to mass production of PCBs is large numbers. When die PCB is required in very small quantities, it is possible to just paint die circuit to be formed on to die PCB directly widi oil paint before etcdiing. The paint resists etching and a track of copper is left whenever it is painted. The paint can be subsequently removed before use. The photoresist mediod is more commonly used these days. Other techniques, i.e. semi and fully additive methods have been reported for producing PCBs and well established in technologically advanced countries. The raw material for the manufaciurc of lVB by additive or semi additive technique is basically an unclad .laminate ami copper which is pattern plated selectively only where it is required to provide a conducting path. Etching can be completely eliminated in the fully-additive method, while load on etchants is brought to a minimum in the semiadditive pattern plating techniques. Selective plating on conducting areas is carried out by several methods such as : (a) Selective desensitisation of areas of the catalyst coated surface by exposure to light of suitable wavelength. (b) Mechanical transfer of the sensitiser in the conducting paths by image transfer by printing (stamping), screen printing or offset printing methods. (c) Selective poisoning of the catalytic activity by a sensitised and catalysed surface. (d) Selective etching out the catalyst from unwanted areas. (e) Selectively marking the unwanted areas of the sensitised and catalysed surface. The processing sequences for both the methods (semi additive & fully additive techniques) are shown below : Processing Sequences for getting Circuit Patterns Semi-additive Fully additive 1.
