Position Purpose

The Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist will be recognised as a clinical leader in


the Emergency Department as recognised by the Employer. They will demonstrate superior
consolidated skills and will motivate and inspire others. They will be leaders in building
and contributing to knowledge in their area of expertise and will encourage teaching,
research and mentoring within a designated clinical stream. They are expected to lead
and develop individuals and teams, and to have currency of professional knowledge and
skills that supports patient care at the highest clinical level.

About The Emergency Department


The Department of Emergency Medicine is a busy tertiary department with over 84,000
patient presentations annually.

There are multiple treatment areas including a 6 bed paediatric area, a Fast Track area, a
24 bed Short Stay Unit and a co-located satellite Radiology Facility.

Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists (AMPs) have an established role within Austin


Hospital Emergency Department, having been first employed in 2006. They provide a
comprehensive service assessing and managing patients from presentation through to
discharge. As such they are required to be proficient across all areas of physiotherapy, with
an emphasis on orthopaedic / musculoskeletal skills. They work in an advanced practice
role and are required to work independently, order and interpret radiology and pathology
investigations, recognize incomplete information requiring further testing and liaise
appropriately with medical and other staff.

AMPs typically assess and assist in the management of patients with the following
presenting conditions in the Emergency Department:
• Musculoskeletal Injuries including soft tissue injuries, dislocations and fractures
• Spinal conditions
• Neurological vestibular conditions

Purpose and Accountabilities

Senior Clinician Advanced Practice Responsibilities

Clinical Care and Leadership


• Provide a rapid triage, assessment and treatment service to patients within the
Emergency Department, Waiting room, Fast Track Area, Paediatric and Short Stay
Unit
• Work within the Austin Hospital AMP – ED scope of practice.
• Assist in the streamlining of medical treatment by documenting a comprehensive
history prior to medical assessment and facilitate decisions regarding the need for
admission, discharge or transfer where appropriate.
• To co-ordinate and staff the Emergency Physiotherapy Review Clinic and develop
appropriate quality and statistical monitoring.
• To be prepared to work a flexible roster including morning, evening, weekend and
public holiday shifts to meet the needs of the department
• Undertake and model evidence based practice principles and interdisciplinary
practice in the provision of care
• Provide high level consultation regarding complex clinical care and discharge
planning issues to the multidisciplinary team and external organisations as
required.
• Represent the area of responsibility and/or department at relevant Austin Health
forums and meetings as required
• Perform additional administrative duties and projects under direction of the
Director of Emergency Medicine.

Teaching
• Provide input into department policy and procedures regarding training and
education for staff, students and other health professionals
• Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate student training in the designated
clinical stream
• Initiate and provide training and education to hospital staff, other professionals
and student groups within Austin Health and externally on issues pertaining to
their discipline
• Initiate and provide teaching/clinical guidance to other members of the
department utilising expertise through, for example, direct teaching, team
meetings and continuing education forums

Quality and Risk


• Strive towards continuous improvement, by initiating, participating and
continuously evaluating the quality and outcomes of service design and
intervention
• Identify potential risks and implement systematic prevention strategies in the
designated clinical stream in accordance with Austin Health policy and
procedures
• Undertake activities and audits to support compliance with the national
standards

Professional Development
• Participate in department performance appraisal, supervision and Professional
Development Planning process
• Undertake education and training to ensure clinical practice is current and
evidence based

Information Management
• Ensure the appropriate dispersion of information to staff
• Record in patient medical files according to policy/ procedure and Austin Health
documentation standards
• Adhere to Austin Health’s policies for use of Information Technology
• Meet activity and reporting timelines for projects and committee work
• Maintain and store minutes of meetings in areas of responsibility
• Record accurate statistics as per policy and procedures

• Report incidents or near misses that have or could have impact on safety -

• Participate in the emergency incident response activities as directed.

Selection Criteria

Essential Knowledge and skills:

• A commitment to Austin Health values: Integrity, Accountability, Respect and


Excellence.
• To have current registration with AHPRA or eligible for membership of relevant
professional association
• 7 years of relevant clinical experience
• Demonstrated high levels of specialist knowledge and clinical skills in advanced
practice musculoskeletal physiotherapy, including previous experience working
as an AMP in an Emergency Department.
• Demonstrated commitment to evidence based practice and ability to translate
this in to practice
• Demonstrated ability to undertake professional supervision and promote
professional competence of other staff
• Demonstrated expertise in teaching, training and education
• High level interpersonal skills that promote team development and engagement,
and a proven ability to relate to people at all levels within an organisation
• Demonstrated research or quality improvement project work, including knowledge
and skills in benchmarking and data analysis
• High level written and verbal skills
• Demonstrated history of and commitment to ongoing professional development
and specialisation
• A commitment to Austin Health values: Integrity, Accountability, Respect and

• Current drivers licence

Desirable but not essential:


• Hold a higher degree or progressing towards higher qualification in a relevant
clinical area
• Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Victorian public health care system and
resource allocation
