Learning in your sleep
Sleep is a mysterious state we share with all other animals. No one can resist it, and if
we don’t get enough of it, our health –physical and mental – begins to suffer. Some
scientists have tried to show that the mind can be trained during sleep. Here, we report
on two unusual experiments involving sleep.
A The scientist believed that it was possible to cure schizophrenia by retraining the mind
during sleep, so he set up an experiment to find out if his idea worked. Some
schizophrenic patients took part in his experiments. While they were sleeping, the doctor
repeatedly played a message to them:
(1) _______________. However, his experiment did not work very well. Researchers
did not find any evidence of improvement in the patients’ condition. He decided to
change the phrase, but the findings were also inconclusive.
I was watching TV one day, and I saw a ballet performance. I knew immediately that’s
what I wanted to do. I was 6 at the time, as I recall.
B In the summer of 1942, Professor Lawrence Leshan conducted a sleep-learning
experiment. He believed that people learned just as well when they were asleep as when
they were awake. But he needed to prove it. If he was right, this would have a big
impact on all kinds of things, from learning languages, to quitting smoking. So, he set
up an experiment with nail biters. Nail biting is a common habit, especially among
children. About half of all children between the ages of 10 and 18 bite their nails, and
the habit is more common among boys than girls.
C Dr. Ewen Cameron was a doctor who specialized in mental illness, especially
schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental illness which causes people to hear voices
coming from inside their own head. People (3) _______________ can often be very
dangerous to themselves and others because the voices they hear might tell them to
harm, or even kill other people. There is no cure for schizophrenia, and scientists do not
really understand what causes it and how to cure it. Over 2.2 million people in the US
suffer from schizophrenia and it is more common among men than women.
D A group of boys (4) _______________ were put in a room to sleep together. While
they were sleeping, a machine played the phrase: (2) _______________, repeating it
over and over again, more than 300 times in one night, every night for many weeks. At
the end of the summer, the scientist examined the boys' nails. His study showed that
40% of them had kicked the habit. He had proved that it was possible to get the mind to
learn new behaviors during sleep.

TASK 2
When Chris started making comedy videos, he was 16 and still in high school. It was
just after YouTube started in 2005. He and his friend Tom used to upload his videos onto
his new platform, and suddenly he was famous. He had hundreds and then thousands of
fans. They were mostly teenagers, younger than Chris, but they would watch every video
that he uploaded, and they loved them.
One year, Chris started a project called Past and Future Bing. In Year 1, he made a
video every two days (say Monday, Wednesday, Friday). He would just talk to the camera
about how he was feeling and about the future. He called this vlog (video log) Past Bing.
The next year, he made a vlog every second day (say Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) where
Future Bing talked back to Past Bing.
That’s what YouTube vlogging used to be like: young maverick filmmakers who
made their videos because they wanted to. “We all used to help each other,” say Chris.
“Nobody got paid. We would make our videos just for the fun of it.”
But things have changed! In recent years, Chris is only at number 7,148 in the list of
the most popular YouTubers! Compare that with Zoe Sugg (Zoella), for example, a young
British woman who gives beauty advice and talks about her life. She has 6.6 million
followers and is sponsored by the beauty industry. She has even written a best-selling
novel about being a vlogger. Money is everywhere on the internet, and that has changed
everything.
In the early days, groups of YouTubers and their fans used to get together and have
fun. They did it for free because they liked it, and the fans used to get really excited when
they met their heroes and heroines. But now, events like Summer in the City (London,
UK) and Vidcon (California, US) attract thousands and thousands of video viewers and
creators. But you have to pay to get there.
Bing still makes videos, but he is branching out into talent management and
coaching. And he’s just released a music album. “Let’s see where that takes me,” he says.
