JOKE ON TOURISTS

Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022 at the age of 96. Without a doubt, her reign on the
British throne was filled with historic moments. But Her Majesty also had a wicked sense of
humour, which only those closest to her got to witness first-hand and sometimes revealed to the
rest of the world.
During the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022, marking 70 years of her reign,
some of those who knew the Queen shared some anecdotes. One of them was told by a former
royal protection officer, Richard Griffin.
The story began with the monarch and Griffin walking around the grounds of Balmoral Castle,
her holiday home in Scotland. She was wearing her tweed jacket and headscarf then. In fact,
the Queen did often enjoy a more low-key lifestyle when staying at Balmoral. She usually
swapped her eye-catching, colourful dresses that she wore to royal engagements for simple
'casual clothes' and wellington boots.
While strolling, they met two American tourists. It was clear from the moment the Queen first
stopped to say hello that they didn’t recognise her. One of the Americans began telling the
Queen where they came from and what sites they had already seen in Great Britain. Then he
asked the Queen where she lived. She said, “Well I live in London, but I've got a holiday home
just on the other side of the hills.” And he said, “How often have you been coming up here?”
When the Queen responded that she had been coming up to Balmoral Castle for over 80 years,
the hiker asked if she had ever met Queen Elizabeth. As quick as a flash she replied, “Well I
haven't, but Richard here meets her regularly.”
Intrigued, the American tourist instantly asked Griffin about the Queen’s personality. Griffin
decided to take advantage of the fact that the hikers failed to recognise her, so his response was
equally hilarious. He had been with the Queen a long time and he knew he could play along
with her, so he said, “Oh, she is bad-tempered and annoying at times, but she also has a lovely
sense of humour.”
The excited American tourist immediately got his camera out. He handed it to the Queen herself
and asked her to take their photo standing with the man who met the Queen. Eventually, they
had one taken by Griffin with her as well. When they waved goodbye, Her Majesty turned to
him and said, ''I'd love to be a fly on the wall when he shows that to his friends in America and
hopefully someone tells him who I am.”
So, if you remember the Queen for her stoic manner and calm voice, this story probably sheds
a new light on the Queen’s sense of humour.

SNOW BUSINESS
In 2026, the area of Cortina d’Ampezzo – a town in Italy’s Dolomite mountains, will host the
women’s Winter Olympics downhill skiing events. The locals are not worried about the snow.
Why? At more than 5,000 feet above sea level, the slopes stay cold enough for artificial snow.
But other parts of Europe are not so optimistic. 2.1. _________ Last winter, many resorts saw
their beautiful white scenery turn brown, and climate trends seem to show that muddy ski slopes
will become a regular thing. There are likely to be periods with lots of snow mixed in with
periods of rain and even heat. That would be bad for business. 2.2. _________ Snow draws
skiers who spend hundreds of euros a day on lift fees, hotels, restaurants, and equipment rentals.
No snow means no tourists – and no income.
The only plan for saving Italy’s ski industry is to use artificial snow as much as possible,
Rolando Galli says. He runs a ski lift in the resort of Abetone, in Italy. 2.3. _________ Galli
decided to run the lifts without snow at that point, just for the views, but not many tourists
showed up. Even though there was some snow for the rest of the season, there was no way to
make up for the lost income. Artificial snow could make a big difference. Still, it would be a
short-term solution because snow cannons only work at freezing temperatures or below.
In years to come, some resorts might not be able to rely on artificial snow. Changing weather
is making it hard to find the right conditions for winter-sports competitions. This year,
organizers of the World Cup ski races had to cancel events in Germany for lack of snow. Since

1924, 21 cities have hosted the Winter Olympics. A recent scientific report predicts that if
global temperatures keep rising at the current rate, only four of those places will have conditions
appropriate for competitions by the mid-21st century. 2.4. _________. Only Sapporo, Japan, is
considered a reliable bet for the 2078 or 2082 games.
Na podstawie: www.timeforkids.com

A. Cortina d’Ampezzo, in Italy, would be rated “unacceptable”.

B. Such places had to switch to summertime activities, like quad bikes and horse riding.
C. Mountain villages depend economically on regular snow and reliable conditions.
D. Plenty of winter resorts will fulfil these harsh conditions.
E. It did nearly 2 million euros less business last season because there was a lack of snow for
some time.
F. They have already had a taste of a much warmer future.
G. Promoting summertime sports is probably a good business strategy.
