Landscape construction is concerned with altering or building the land to make it

functional. For example, amending the land by flattening it, improving drainage, or
raising certain areas is regarded as construction because these activities can make it
more functional. Building structures, such as a patio, also serve the purpose of
improving the functionality of the land. However, landscape construction is also
beneficial to incorporate to improve the overall aesthetic of the property by planting
trees, adding a walkway, or removing an old flower bed.

Landscape construction refers to the process of building and installing outdoor

features such as planting beds, patios, walls, pathways, and other elements that
enhance the aesthetic appeal and functionality of a landscape. At its core, landscape
construction involves the design, planning, and execution of various elements that
transform an outdoor space. It requires a deep understanding of the terrain, climate,
and clients' needs to create a cohesive and functional landscape. Whether it's for
residential, commercial, or public spaces, landscape construction brings out the best
of nature and human ingenuity.

What is the difference in landscaping, landscape design and landscape

construction? Landscaping is modifying the outdoor environment to serve a certain
function. Landscaping design is creating a plan on how to modify outdoor
environment in the best way. Landscape construction is the introduction or
installation of an element to the outdoor environment.

Importance of proper construction methods

1. Enhanced Property Value: A professionally designed landscape not only

captivates your senses but also significantly increases property value. A well-
maintained and thoughtfully designed outdoor space becomes an attractive
selling point for prospective buyers.
2. Reduces Energy Costs: Planting trees in a strategic manner can significantly
reduce your energy costs. The natural shade that falls over your roof
contributes to reducing temperature indoors. It decreases the burden on your
air conditioner and reduces energy bills while giving you a cooling effect
outdoors from the sun.
3. Environmental Sustainability: Expertly executed landscape projects
incorporate eco-friendly solutions such as water-saving irrigation systems,
rainwater harvesting, native plant selections, and sustainable drainage. These
efforts contribute to preserving the environment and reducing water and
energy consumption.
4. Improved Well-being: A lush and harmonious landscape promotes mental
well-being, reduces stress, and allows for a closer connection to nature.
Outdoor spaces that are customized to cater to your needs can become a
sanctuary where you can escape the pressures of daily life.
5. Increased Functionality: Landscape construction services help optimize
your outdoor space for various activities, making it an extension of your living
areas. Whether you envision an outdoor dining area, a play space for
children, or an inviting entertainment area, the possibilities are endless.

PRE-CONSTRUCTION PHASE

The pre-construction phase includes creating a strategic plan for the project, creating
a design, securing permits or entitlements where needed, and gathering the labour
and resources required for construction. In this phase, there is number of activities

 Site Analysis - A number of processes are carried out to gather information

about the site so as to plan accordingly. In this section, data is collected from
maps, recorded data from the likes of town planners, the site itself in form of
samples from different components like soil, information from the client,
restrictions from local government authorities like set backs on lands, etc. This
provides with information such as; topography hydrography, existing
vegetation, existing structure (if any), problem areas on the site, and so on.

 Survey - Using several types of methods like triangulation, visual survey,

ecological survey, soil survey, etc, one can deduce measurement of the area,
the available flora and fauna, soil type, soil fertility and so on.
 Grading and Drainage - Grading reshapes the land to prepare for specific
elements like grass, planters or water fixtures. This often involves removing
the topsoil, installing irrigation and leveling or sloping the land to facilitate
water drainage.

HARDSCAPING METHODS

Hardscaping refers to the non-living or man-made elements in a landscspe. It plays a

crucial role in enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of your outdoor living space.
For this, there is need to pick the right materials. Based on the site analysis and
survey, materials should be picked to ensure durability, aesthetics and sustainability.
Assessing material attributes such as strength, resistance to weather, and
maintenance requirements is crucial. For example, in an area with sulphur rich soil,
sulphur resistant concrete should be used.

Hardscaping methods include paving of pathways using asphalt, concrete, brick, etc,
retaining or segmental wall construction, patio installation, decking, fencing, steps,
gazebos and so on.

SOFTSCAPING METHODS

This is what is usually referred to as garden designing. This to a certain degree is

true but it is not limited to greenery. Softscaping is the modifying of the outdoor
environment using living things. This methods include planting and taking care of
trees, shrubs, etc., mulching, erosion control
