How about the forms of the verbs, Rods? are written before nouns.

(running) and past participle (broken,
Excellent answer, Rods. painted, stolen, and fallen).

verbs in the sentence, what do you call

verbals specifically participles.
Thank you for your observations. Give
5 claps to yourselves.
( students do as told )
Any queries? Clarifications?
Very good!
None, ma’am!
C. Abstraction
I am certain that all of you have a prior
knowledge on verbal participles which
will be discussed today.

A verbal participle is a verb form that

functions as an adjective in a sentence.
Verbal participles are derived from verbs
and often end in -ing (present participle)
or -ed, -d, -ied and -en (past participle).
They can be used to describe nouns.
 Examples:
1. The running water was refreshing.
(present participle)
2. The broken window needs to be fixed.
(past participle)
Can you identify the participle in the
sentence?
Yes, Jolimae? ( students raise their hands)

Yes, you’re correct. The participle in the sentence is

“running” that describes the noun water.
How about the second sentence?

Yes, Irien? ( students raise their hands)

The participle in the second sentence is

Yes, you’re also correct! “broken” that describes the noun
window.
There are two main types of verbal
participles:
1. Present Participle is formed by
adding "-ing" to the base form of the
verb. It is used to modify a noun
 Examples:
1. The running water is refreshing.
In this sentence the present participle is
“running” that modifies the noun water.
2. The crying baby needs to be
comforted. .
In this sentence the present participle is
“crying” that modifies the noun baby.

2. Past Participle is formed in various

ways depending on the verb. It is
commonly formed by adding "-ed," "-
d,"”-ied” to the base form of a regular
verb. Irregular verbs have their own
unique forms.
 Examples:
1. The broken window needs to be
repaired.
In this sentence the past participle is
“broken” that modifies the noun window.
2. The stolen car was found abandoned.
In this sentence the past participle is
“stolen” that modifies the noun car.
Aside from single word participle, you
can also form a participial phrase. This
phrase consists of a participle plus a
noun.
Examples:
Terrified by the killing incident, the
victims were emotionally disturbed.
Here, the past participial phrase ”terrified
by the killing incident” describes the
emotion of the victims.
Walking in the street, the child was hit
by the bus.
Here, the present participial phrase “
walking in the street” describes the
situation of the child.
Participial phrase should be separated
from the noun modified by putting a
comma after it.
Do you have questions about participles?
None, ma’am!
D. Application
This time, we will have a final activity,
“WRITE ME’’. I will group
you into 4 . Manila paper and pentel pens

group, you will write a narrative about
your week-end activities. Be sure to use

phrases. Finally, one representative will
be chosen to read your narrative.
