Udawalawa
National parks provide visitors the opportunity to appreciate the free spirit of wild animals. Udawalawa
national park, which is located in the Rathnapura and Monaragala districts with 30821 hectares, was
established in 1972. The park is rich in bio diversity and genetic variation within the same species. At
the centre of the park lies the Udawalawa reservoir. The habitat surrounding the reservoir includes
marshes, forest and grassland. There is a teak plantation beyond the southern boundary which was
planted before the declaration of the park.

Udawalawa is a home to over 500 elephants that include about 300 residents and 200 migratory. The
park is unique in the sense that you can see elephants throughout the day and during the entire year.
Species recorded from the park include 21 fish, 12 amphibians 33 reptiles, 184 birds, 43 mammals and
135 species of butterflies and 94 varieties of plants.

Two kilometres from the park there is a positive story of human intervention in the case of young wild
elephants. There is an elephant transit home for abandoned, sick, elephant calves. They are provided
milk, food and companionship till they are released to the wild again.
