manage stress and other common symptoms of mental health problems.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

According to the National Statistics Office (NSO), mental health

illnesses rank as the third most common form of morbidity among Filipinos. In
the assessment conducted on the Philippine mental health system, a
prevalence of 16% of mental disorders among children was reported. With
this alarming number of cases, it is surprising to see how the Philippines is
currently responding to this problem. To date, there are only live government
hospitals with psychiatric facilities for children, 84 general hospitals with
psychiatric units, and 46 outpatient facilities from which there are only 11 that
are designated for children and adolescents. Additionally, there are only 60
child psychiatrists practicing in the Philippines, with the majority of them
practicing in urban areas such as the National Capital Region. Hence,
children with mental health problems who are in rural areas have less access
to such services.

A report from World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that in the

world, one in every four individuals will suffer from mental health problems at
some point in their lives and that 430 million people worldwide have a mental
health problem in 2015, the global prevalence of common mental illness such
as depression and anxiety disorders are estimated at 55% and 3.6%,
respectively suicide accounts for 1.5% of global deaths in the same year
(WHO. 2017) WHO D004 suggests that this widespread occurrence of mental
health problems are often untreated and can cause role performance
impairment.

Mental health disorders produce a sizeable burden to its victims.

Literature suggests that mental illness can cause days out of work, loss of
productivity, financial drain from treatment costs, family and caregiver stress
and loss of life.

According to wend mental health surveys, 50% of psychiatric disorder

exists by age 14 (Sorel 2010). Mental health problems, being developmental
in nature are best addressed through prevention measures during early age.
Educational institutions, being the student primary environment during their
6

formal educational years, should establish systems wherein actual and

potential mental health problems among the young can be addressed. The
link between mental health of students, and academic engagement.

Mental health is the foundation for the well-being and effective

functioning of individuals. It is more than the absence of a mental disorder, it
is the ability to think. learn, and understand one’s emotions and the reactions
of others. Mental health is a state of balance, both within and with the
environment.

An awareness of fitness, pleasure, and success is called mental well-

being (Davis, 2019). Davis (2019) also added that mental well-being involves
a sense of handling stress, a sense of intention or value, happiness in life,
and the maintenance of mental health.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals with the research methodology. It described the

research area, research design, population and locale if the study, data
gathering procedure and data gathering tools.

Research Design

This study will be using descriptive research, the types of Non-

experimental research design. Non-experimental research design have a
particular variable that cannot be manipulated by experimenter (according to
Kowalczyk, 2015). Descriptive Research it aims to analyzing and approaches
in gathering information about the preset condition. Descriptive research also
aims at defining and giving a verbal portrayal of a person, thing, event,
situation, beliefs and trends.

Population and Locale of The Study

In determining the mental health issues of the students in Cabalitian

National High School, non-probability sampling will be utilized in the research.

The researcher will use purposive sampling in choosing their

respondents. (Creswell 2014) suggest being purposeful in choosing
respondents that might give more information in your research questions.

There are 122 Junior high students and 58 Senior high student a total
of 180 students in Cabalitian National High School. The researcher will
choose the grade 7 students to be their respective respondents to contribute
something to their study.

Data Gathering Procedure

A letter of request to conduct the study will be prepared. The

researchers will conduct research to the Grade 7 students of Cabalitian
National High School through questionnaire. The researchers will explain to
the respondents the importance of their response to the study. Since the
researcher’s goal is to determine the effects of mental health issue in their
academic performance. In the questionnaire, likert scale will be use to
8

determine if the respondents are agree or disagree in the statements. After

the respondents answered the questions, the researchers will collect and tally
the data for interpretation.

Data Gathering Tool

Since this study is descriptive type of research, the tool that will be use
is questionnaire, in which the first part is the demographic profile of the
respondents, second part is the students experiencing mental health issues
and the last part is how students cope with their mental health issues. The
questionnaire will be submit to the research adviser and the final final
questionnaire will be revise and supervise.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The researchers will used frequency, percentage and mean to analyze

data.

1. Frequency Distribution: The data that will be gathered through the

questionnaires will recapitulate, tally and tabulated that intimate the
number of participants to the certain questions in the questionnaire.
F
2. Percentage: P= × 100
N
Where: P = percentage
F = frequency
n = total number of respondents
100 = constant
3. Mean: The mean is the most often used measure of central tendency
because it is simple and the most reliable measure.
The formula is: AWM = (Fx1)+(Fx2)+(Fx3)
N
Where: f1 = number of respondents who answered maybe.
f2 = number of respondents who answered no.
f3 = number of respondents who answered yes.
N = number of total respondents.
