CAMBRIDGE GLOBAL ENGLISH 9: UNIT 2 PHOTOCOPIABLE ACTIVITIES

Photocopiable 5: Can you give me some advice

about my diet?
Aim: Learners practise using vocabulary for talking about food and health. They revise new
vocabulary and ideas from Lesson 2.1. Learners read about other learners’ diets and give advice.
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Completion time: 20–30 minutes
Language focus: from Lesson 2.1:
 Language for giving opinions about how healthy diets are, for example:
I think I eat enough protein, but I need to eat more salads and vegetables.
I eat plenty of fruit.
I should drink more water and fewer sugary drinks.
I think I eat too many sweet things. I should probably eat fewer cakes and biscuits.
I don’t want to eat less ice cream, but perhaps I eat too much chocolate!
 too many to refer to countable nouns and too much to refer to uncountable nouns
 Comparative forms: less (little), fewer (few)
 Abstract nouns: fast food, illness, junk food, (mal)nutrition, obesity, poverty, food waste
 Other words from Lesson 2.1: undernourished, balanced diet, consume, calories, vegetarian
Materials: One set of Can you give me some advice about my diet? cards per pair of learners, cut up
into cards along the dashed lines.
Procedure:
 Revise Professor Brown’s advice from the listening exercise (Exercise 2) in the Learner’s Book and
the new words listed in the Language focus above.
 Tell learners they are going to read about four students’ diets and give advice to them about how to
eat more healthily and in a more environmentally friendly way.
 Read about Dan’s diet and elicit suggestions. Encourage learners to use some of the words on the
cards and the structures from Lesson 2.1, for example:
You should eat fewer crisps and less chocolate. You are eating too many calories and too much fat,
sugar and salt. I think you are malnourished. Pasta and rice are cheap and they don’t contain too
much sugar and fat. Instead of big packets of crisps, your parents should buy big packets
of vegetables.
 Distribute one set of Can you give me some advice about my diet? cards to each pair of learners.
 Allow learners sufficient time to write advice for the other three people.
 Circulate and support less confident learners.
 Give class feedback on common mistakes.
