INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The transition to senior high school marks a pivotal stage in a student's life, characterized
by increased academic demands, social pressures, and the formation of new identities. Within
this dynamic environment, the influence of peers becomes particularly significant, shaping not
only social interactions but also academic performance and decision-making. This research aims
into the intricate relationship between the circle of friends and the academic and decision-making
processes of senior high school students at Calinan National High School.Senior high school is a
pivotal time in a student's life, filled with challenges and decisions that shape their future. During
this period, peer influence becomes increasingly significant, and the impact of a student's circle
of friends can be profound.

Harris & Orth (2019) argue that "for many students, friendship is an essential interpersonal
vehicle for leading them to psychological growth and maturity, facilitating compassion sociali
nfluence on the development of self-esteem". The above statement strongly suggests the
unprecedented impact of peer grouping on almost every aspect of adolescent growth. Such an
impact can be felt in the social and emotional lives of young people, not only stopping at the
above, but can also manifest in their attitudes towards educational activities and viewing.

Calinan National High School, with its diverse student body and unique learning environment,
provides a rich context for exploring this complex interplay. While academic success is often
attributed to individual factors like motivation and study habits, the influence of peers cannot be
overlooked. This study aims to shed light on the specific ways in which the social dynamics
within a student's circle of friends impact their academic performance and decision-making,
offering valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by senior high school
students in this particular school setting. We Researchers aim to explore how the characteristics
and behaviors of a student's friends might affect their grades.
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the significant difference between the Influence of the circle
of friends in Academic Performance and Decision Making among the Senior High School
Students in Calinan National High school. Specifically, the study seeks to answer the following
questions:

1.. What is the level of academic performance among senior high school students at Calinan
National High School?

2. What is the level of Influence of the Circle of friends groups of senior high school students at
Calinan National High School?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the characteristics of influence of circle of friends

and their academic performance at Calinan National High School?

Research Hypothesis

Ho: There is no significant relationship between the characteristics of a student's circle of

friends and their academic performance in Calinan National High School.

Ha: There is a significant relationship between the characteristics of a student's circle of

friends (e.g., academic focus, social activity) and their academic performance in Calinan
National High School.
Significance of the Study
This study is important because it helps us understand the level of how a student's friends
can affect their grades and choices about the future. Teachers can learn from this study and find
ways to help students make good choices about their friends and how they use their time.
Students can learn about how their friends influence them and make better decisions about who
they spend time with. Parents can also learn about how friends affect their kids and talk to them
about making good choices. Moreover, the study's findings can contribute to a broader
understanding of the role of peer influence in education. It can inform the development of
educational programs and interventions that aim to maximize the positive aspects of peer
relationships while mitigating potential negative influences. Ultimately, this research seeks to
contribute to a more supportive and effective learning environment for senior high school
students in Calinan National High School and beyond.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study aimed to investigate the influence of the circle of friends on the academic
performance and decision-making processes of senior high school students at Calinan National
High School. The decision grade 11 students from the study ensured adequate time for survey
administration, data analysis, and conclusion drawing. This study focuses on how a student's
friends affect their grades and choices about the future.Researchers looking at how different
types of friend groups (like those focused on schoolwork or those who are more social) might
influence how well students do in school and what they plan to do after graduation. However,
this study has some limitations. We only looked at senior high school students at Calinan
National High School, so the results might not apply to other schools or younger students. We
also survey students to tell us about the level of their friends and choices. Finally, we only looked
at a few aspects of friend groups,. Even with these limitations, this study can still help us
understand how friends affect students and how we can create a better learning environment for
everyone.
Definition of Terms

The terms of the study were used to identify the degree and define the accurate meaning of
these variables that is suitable for this study and to avoid confusion on other synonyms of the
said performance or similarities in functions with the app.

Circle of friends -The group of people a student considers their close friends, with whom they
regularly interact and share social connections. This includes individuals who share similar
interests, values, and activities.

Academic performance - A measure of a student's achievement in academic subjects, typically

reflected in grades, test scores, and overall academic progress.

Influence -The power or capacity of a group or individual to affect the actions, beliefs, or
decisions of others. This can be positive (e.g., encouraging academic effort) or negative (e.g.,
promoting risky behaviors).
Review of Literature and Studies

Peer relationships have never been more important than during adolescence, which is
the age group this study targeted. They spend more time than adults interacting with their peers
and report very high levels of happiness in peer settings, while placing the highest priority on
peer behavioral standards (Orben et al., 2020). This phase of association dynamics development
seems to be very well preserved among peers.

Furthermore, several studies on student development have shown that, compared with children
and adults, they are more sensitive and responsive to a variety of social stimuli such as facial
expressions and social responses. association (Burnett et al., 2011). However, evidence of
hypersensitivity to these social stimuli suggests that this age group may be more susceptible to
exposure to positive or negative stimuli from peers in decision-making situations. which paves
the way for the impact of hyperbolic perceptions of friends' context on decision-making. It is
clear that college students are more likely to take risks than adults, as evidenced by high rates of
alcohol, tobacco and drug testing, unprotected sexual activity, and violent and illegal crime.
violence and reckless driving. In fact, they do possess the knowledge, values, and processing
skills to effectively evaluate risky decisions as adults (Temitope & Christy, 2015) The query at
this factor is, how few of the younger humans have the desire strength to select a set that
consequently effect definitely on them?

However, the appealing nature and the morals of the organization decide whether or not a set. is
probably to have a wonderful or bad effect on members` motivation and fulfillment. If the group
of friends or ecosystem of the organization is warm, knowledge and supportive, the
organization's influence, project overall performance and fulfillment will maximum probably be
wonderful. An adverse organization will constantly, in general such that doesn't vicinity
prominence to teachers will frustrate and bring a bad effect now no longer best at the member`s
boom and conduct however additionally on their power to research and educational
fulfillment.Conversely, the form of character a scholar is suggests the sort of organization she or
he is maximum probably to join. In the equal vein Festigen as quoted in Lavy and Schlosser
(2007).additionally cited that imitation of behaviors in a set takes place whilst someone acts in a
manner this is probably to be joined via way of means.Recently, it has been determined that
students' subjective sense of school belonging may have a significant impact on their academic
motivation, engagement, and participation—particularly for students from groups at-risk school
dropout. Friends have an impact on students' academic motivation as well, sometimes in a bad
way. (Goodenow et. al., 2010)

Teenagers who actively participate in their education are more likely to acquire the
values, information, skills, and social capital necessary for a smooth transition into adulthood.
The motivational context that behavioral and psychological engagement produces influences
how teenagers handle social and academic challenges as well as disappointments in the
classroom. Youth that are actively involved are more likely to stick with and return to difficult
school assignments. Disengaged youth, on the other hand, find it harder to deal with issues at
school, which makes them less valuable in the classroom and even less engaged. Young people
who disengage from school may also find it difficult to connect with their education and are
more likely to experience behavioral issues that further disrupt their education. (Wang et. al.,
2018)

In addition,Numerous studies highlight the positive influence of peers on academic performance.

Research suggests that students with friends who value academic success are more likely to
engage in positive behaviors like studying, attending class, and completing assignments (Wentzel
& Asher,2015) Peer support and encouragement can also contribute to motivation and
self-efficacy ( Wigfield, 2017). Conversely, studies have also demonstrated the negative impact
of peers on academic performance. Students who associate with friends who prioritize social
activities or engage in risky behaviors may experience decreased academic motivation, increased
absenteeism, and lower grades (Dishion & Patterson,2014).
According to (Wentzel, 2015).has identified specific characteristics of friend groups that
influence academic performance. His studies have shown that students with friends who are
academically successful tend to perform better themselves Similarly, students in friend groups
that prioritize social activities may experience a decline in academic performance.

Lastly ,Academic performance in young people is a key affirmation of future education and
career performance. Friends play an important role in academic achievement because they
support academic performance, which can be encouraged and discouraged. For some reasons,
performance in academic can be an important trial mechanism for friendships. There are
friendships between people with similar values, who are in close contact and who understand
each other's choices and decisions. Highly successful students are more likely to be associated
with other highly successful students and vice versa. Various studies have shown how friends
influence academic performance. Most studies show that children tend to have better attitudes to
learn when they have friends in school. A study found out that adolescent friendships with peers
are linked to academic performance (Jacobson, 2012). In addition, the study shows that social
support has a positive relationship with academic performance.

Peers become increasingly important socializing agents for academic behaviors and attitudes
during adolescence. This study investigated peer influence and selection effects on adolescents'
emotional (i.e., flow in schoolwork, school burnout, school value), cognitive (i.e., school effort),
and behavioral (i.e., truancy) engagement in school.
