I. RATIONALE

World Water Day, held on 22 March every year focuses on the importance of
freshwater. The idea for this international day goes back to 1992, the year in which the
United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro took
place. That same year, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution by
which 22 March of each year was declared World Day for Water, to be observed starting
in 1993.

World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people
living without access to safe water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water
crisis. According to UN A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement
of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

This year the DENR-CENRO Goa joined the celebration of the World Water Day
with the title “Groundwater – Making the invisible visible” highlighting the importance
of actions to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of water resources and planetary
health that serves a key to poverty reduction, economic growth, and environmental
sustainability.

II. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ACTIVITIES

A. Communication, Education and Public Awareness Activity

One of the activities in celebration with World Water Day 2022 is the conduct of
information, education and communication campaign. The activity started around 1:30
pm which participated by 11 DENR personnel (Male-8, Female-3) and 10 participants
(Male-4, Female-6) from the SK Council of barangay at Paniman, Caramoan, Camarines
Sur. A brief information about World Water Day, its significance, protection,
conservation and its benefits to the communities was delivered by CEO John Samuel P.
Nuñez. FTI Jomar C. Quides discussed the importance of water resources especially
groundwater. He emphasizes to the participants that life would not be possible without
groundwater since most arid areas of the world depend entirely on groundwater. Groundwater
supplies a large proportion of the water we use for drinking, sanitation, food production and
industrial processes. He also added that it is critically important to the healthy functioning of
ecosystems, such as wetlands and rivers thus protection, conservation and avoiding
overexploitation is important in ecosystem management, surviving and adapting to climate
change and meeting the needs of a growing population. He also encourages the participants
to participate in the activities, initiatives and implementation of the Environmental Laws
imposed by the DENR to protect, conserve and develop water resources. A short film
showing about groundwater was also conducted.

B. Social Media IEC (Facebook Frame)

As part of the celebration of World Water Day, CENRO Goa personnel

simultaneously updated their Facebook profile frame with the IEC caption “The 22nd of
March every year, is about focusing attention on the importance of water through the
celebration of World Water Day. Under the title ‘Groundwater – Making the invisible
visible’, this year’s campaign will explain groundwater’s vital role in water and sanitation
systems, agriculture, industry, ecosystems and climate change adaptation. The
overarching message of the campaign is that exploring, protecting and sustainably using
groundwater will be central to surviving and adapting to climate change and meeting the
needs of a growing population. Groundwater draws attention to the hidden water resource
that has always been critically important but not fully recognized in sustainable
development policymaking.” By adapting this IEC, it provides widespread awareness to
people through social media and engaging them with the information on the importance
of water resources.
