To maintain constant power, add approximately 1% for each 6°C above standard,
subtract approximately 1% for each 6°C below standard.

NOTE: Full throttle manifold pressure values may not be obtainable when atmospheric conditions are non-standard.

reference: POH Section 5-22, 5-23, for TAS consult POH Section 5-27

NOTE: Close the cowl flaps as soon as you reach cruise level. Due to a simulation limitation in X-
Plane, the cowl flap drag is much higher than it should be. This procedure is also done in real life but
is crucial in X-Plane to achieve the cruise performance numbers.

HINT: This procedure guide recommends a cruise power setting of xx” / 2300 rpm. This will reduce
your workload, as you can maintain 2300 rpm until short final, where the props are set full forward.

SINGLE ENGINE HANDLING PIPER SENECA II, PA34-200T
TAKEOFF

Perform a self-briefing for the event of an engine failure during takeoff.

Do not continue the takeoff run if the engine fails on the ground!
With long runways, you may consider delaying the gear retraction until you run out of usable runway
for a quick emergency landing.

As a rule of thumb:
DO NOT expect a light-twin piston aircraft with a single engine to climb well, IF AT ALL!

Engine failure briefing (example):

“…In case of an engine failure with the gear down, close the throttles, mixtures cutoff, land straight
ahead! Maneuver as necessary to avoid obstacles on ground.
In case of engine failure with the gear up, perform memory items…

1. Pitch for Blue Line Speed (VYSE, 89 IAS)

2. All Levers Forward (from right to left: Mixtures, Props, Throttles)
… 3. Identify (Dead foot dead engine…)
4. Verify (Slowly reduce power on dead engine – verify you are not losing power!)
5. Prop Feather (reduces drag from the dead engine, feathering must be done before the RPM drops below 800rpm!)
….climb to a safe altitude (VFR = traffic pattern / IFR = MSA) perform the non-normal checklist
followed by the after take-off checklist…”

Single Engine Take Off (after gear up)

If time/workload permits, you may also do the following steps by memory

1. Close cowl flap, dead engine. (crucial in X-Plane, due to sim limitation of cowl flap drag which is higher than it should be!)
2. Cowl flap ½ open, good engine. (crucial in X-Plane, due to sim limitation of cowl flap drag which is higher than it should be!)
These steps will also be handled by the non-normal checklist, POH section 3.

For zero sideslip and optimal climb performance

- Bank 2°- 5° towards life engine (or “lift the dead…”)
- ½ Ball towards life engine ( “split the ball…”)

SINGLE ENGINE HANDLING PIPER SENECA II, PA34-200T
SINGLE ENGINE CRUISE, SHUTDOWN OR RESTART

- Consult POH procedures section 3-3 to 3-5 –

Land at the nearest, suitable airport.

SINGLE ENGINE LANDING

Consider flaps 0° landing for better go around performance.

Do not land with flaps setting higher than 25°.
Keep speed above VYSE of 89 KIAS as long as possible.

SINGLE ENGINE GO AROUND

Airspeed above VYSE of 89 KIAS!

Open Throttle slowly!
Be prepared for the yaw moment – counteract with the rudder!
Retract Flaps slowly and step by step.
At positive rate of climb, retract the landing gear.
