Osmosis with Potato Slices

Laboratory Exercise 2

Osmosis is a type of passive transport where water is diffused across a semi-

permeable membrane from an area of high-water concentration to an area of low water
concentration. If too much water leaves the cell and goes into the environment, plasmolysis
results and the cell shrink. On the other hand, if too much water moves into the cell, cytolysis
can take place and the cell will burst open. The swelling of plant cells is called turgor
pressure and is vital for support of the plant. Plasmolysis and cytolysis can both lead to the
death of a cell. As a result, most cells live in an environment where movement of water in
and out is about equal.

Materials:
Distilled water electric scale salt

Drinking glasses paper towel Potato

Procedure:
1. Fill two glasses with distilled water.
2. Add 2-3 tablespoons of salt in one drinking glass.
3. Stir it.

4. Obtain two pieces of potato roughly the same size.

5. Weigh each piece using electronic balance.
6. Dunk the sliced potato in the water.
7. Sit it overnight.

8. Remove the sliced potato onto a plate. Dry them off with a paper towel and weigh the
potatoes.

9. Record your percent change in weight = (final-initial weight)/initial weight. Show your
work.

a. % Change of potato in distilled water:

b. % Change of potato in distilled water with salt:

10. Break the potato pieces in half and note the texture, crispness, etc. of each piece
11. Clean up your area and discard of the potato pieces.

Results and Conclusion:

Initial weight (g) Final weight (g) Quality of potato Hypotonic or

(softer, firmer or hypertonic
the same?) solution?
Potato in distilled
water
Potato in distilled
water with salt
